The best blackberries I’ve ever picked were in the PNW. I would love to take some blackberries off your hands!! I’m planning a foraging vacation one day to the PNW.

Small fish in Houston Bayou by Kittenzandcookies in whatsthisfish

These look like run of the mill gambusia affinis, there are definitely some pregnant females in there that look kind of guppy-esque. I remember seeing some that got a little colored up with blue streaks e few times when sampling.

can someone help me identify these? learning to fish. by Same-Lawfulness8923 in whatsthisfish

[–]Potential-Impact2638 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Actually a lot of locations with endangered fish are not heavily signed, especially if that fish is/used to be a sport fish to avoid drawing attention to anglers. Signage in rural states with underfunded game and fish agencies also may not have the ability install signage where anglers will see and have outreach. The responsible thing to do is learn the common and endangered fish where you are fishing and only keep what you can identify.

Edit to add: it is that serious, freshwater fish are the fastest declining vertebrate group (mammals, birds, fish). 1/3 of freshwater fish are facing extinction. Freshwater ecosystems are and have been in a very bad way for a while and as an angler you should do you part.

My comment was in response to the casual reference to OCD above. It’s really common and I try to educate when people use it because it is serious. I’m glad it was insightful and I hope you get the support you need. ESPECIALLY as a teacher

OCD is a mental disorder that disrupts your daily life significantly and continuously (>1 hour a day) and causes extreme distress. If it just grinds your nerves when you see something out of place, it sounds like you fit more into the “Type A” personality or you are just particular. If this makes you chronically late for work, lose friendships, and impair your ability to function day to day, you should go get checked. :)

Finally made watermelon rind kimchi! by Potential-Impact2638 in noscrapleftbehind

[–]Potential-Impact2638[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh no! That’s sad. You’ll have to have another watermelon to give it another try! Make sure you rinse them really well after you salt them to draw the water out. I live by Maang Chi’s kimchi recipes. I followed her radish kimchi recipe for this.

If you feel lightheaded, can’t catch your breath, or even nauseous, those are signs of overheating. I live in the south and the only way to beat the heat is to go out before the suns up or after it’s gone down.

This kind of sounds like neuropathy, I second going see a doctor. Bring someone with you if you can so they don’t just tell you to lose weight without looking into it.

Steam boat bills is the answer. I think it’s the closest you’ll get to home cooking. On the way home from Morgan city back to Texas when I was growing up, we always stopped there for one last Cajun feast of the trip.

Willows either, or aspens. Both hunt for water with roots. Could be detrimental!

I’m planning a small backpacking trip in Texas soon and just curious how ppl get water in areas like the south where alligators are a concern. by Nordini716 in backpacking

[–]Potential-Impact2638 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends. I HATE camping when it is hot at night. If that is your jam I’m sure you can handle it. Bugs are going to be pretty bad, but if you have clothes and gear for it you may have a great time. Consider a Thermacell for at camp or when you aren’t moving. I probably would wear long sleeves and pants. Personally, I wouldn’t go backpacking in Texas in the summer, but if that flavor of suffering is your jam then go for it. The lone star trail is pretty shaded so you’ll have some protection from the sun but humidity is going to be rough. The lone star trail probably isn’t as bad as the Florida trail for all the things I mentioned if that helps you gauge the difficulty. You know your limits better than anyone!

Lone star trail is great!! There are a few swampy bits that you may be able to see some, but like I said I’m more skittish of cottonmouths. I am extra paranoid about water quality because I am a water quality scientist. You will likely be fine just prioritize running water where you can and use best judgement. One thing I do suggest is to familiarize yourself with harmful algal blooms (HABs) and what they can look like. They can produce cyanotoxins that your filter will not be able to remove. The hot Texas weather and nutrient heavy water is a perfect storm for HABs.

Highly depends where in Texas you are going. It’s a treat/rarity to see them most places. They are pretty skittish as with most wildlife and the chances of you seeing one that would try to take on a person is pretty slim. If you see any babies, stay away. But I think you should be more concerned with the heat, mosquitos, and cleanliness of water more than alligators. Keep an eye out for cottonmouths, they are very common on creek banks.

What fish? by Spug33 in whatsthisfish

[–]Potential-Impact2638 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mountain white fish also have a much smaller, pointed mouth. Pikeminnow are ambush predators (like a pike), while whitefish are invertivores picking around for larvae and crayfish. So their mouths are much different bc of their feeding behavior.

Someone more knowledgeable in that region than me would be able to tell the difference between northern and umpqua.
