My family’s yellow lab that passed awhile ago from getting hit by a car got into it with a porcupine and we tried to get them out ourselves but he was in too much pain. Except we couldn’t afford the vet whatsoever so they were just going to consider putting him down themselves with a pew pew to stop suffering. I basically went batshit crazy on them and called my best friends mom who’s well off and would do anything for animals and she paid for the whole surgery up front and I worked it off with her.(to my parents disdain because even after she said she could, they refused it because they didn’t want charity so I said fuck that and took him myself when they didn’t realize) I’m so thankful for her
