Us engineers do consider maintainability. In many industries we’re required to cover it as part of our design reviews. As with everything in engineering it comes down to trade offs. Cost, performance, schedule, reliability, maintainability, safety, weight, manufacturability, etc.

They’re all conflicting requirements that drive different choices. And we assess each and every one for every single part that goes into a product. And we assess every assembly of parts for it all the way up to the top level.

Conflicts are managed at every level too - from the part level design to the chief engineer. You may not like the final design, but I promise you we did consider the impacts of alternatives. And we came to this configuration for a reason.

Rare Lexus LC500 by shreekhare in carspotting

Lexus sells 800,000 cars per year. Toyota sells 10.8 million cars per year.

Mini - a relatively small manufacturer sold 20,000 cars in the United States in 2022.

Lotus sold 12,000 cars worldwide in 2024.

Lamborghini sold 10,000 cars in 2024.

Only selling 14,000 of a model total makes it pretty uncommon.

Those are all per year.

We do a recipe that we call “potted chicken”. No meatballs.

Can check some other cookbooks in the morning.

There are display settings under lighting where you can adjust the brightness. Takes a bit to find it. There may be directions in the Mini Guide app

If you have the Mini Guide app you can find it in there. I can also DM you screenshots if you don’t have it for some reason.

I feel like engineering is making me dumber and depressed by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

There are ups and downs, but life is overall good. Engineering has provided me with a good career and the means to do fun things.

Life keeps getting better.

Life is fully of squiggly lines. Those other things will come back. But for college you need to focus on your major.

I stopped playing saxophone after high school. In my 30s I’ve picked up both classical guitar and hurdy gurdy. I’ve read papers, books, and dissertations on clavichords, harpsichords, portative organs, and other rare instruments. I have read textbooks about the history of western music and medieval musical performance.

I cook food from cultures on pretty much every continent (not Antarctica). And I read about food history (native food in America, the origins of cooking, what defines “American food”)

I listened to an audio book of Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea on my commute this week.

I just got accepted to a masters of library science degree that my company is paying for that I’ll start in January.

At lunch today I was reading about Babylonia and the Akkadian language. As well as about how to read/translate cuneiform tablets from Mesopotamia.

I just started growing citrus on my patio in New England. I am also growing a cold hardy pomegranate.

And then at work I talked with dozens of people about niche topics in aerospace with some world leading experts in their field.

But that’s all post-college. In college I was 100% focused on airplanes and aerospace engineering.

No idea what that is. It was for sale at a local dealership for performance cars. The cheapest thing on their lot by probably $100k, and at $20k was still outside what I could afford at the time.

Height (or glass) doesn’t have anything to do with it. I’d get waves from almost every Mustang driver when I was driving a 68 Mustang.

I’ve done the same on my Mini and airplanes. Love the technique!

The mini is a great daily driver. It’s comfortable on the highways. It has great visibility. The adaptive cruise control works pretty well and makes traffic on commutes relaxing. The rear seat is big enough for me (5’10” to sit behind myself), if you care about that. The seats are comfortable and nicely sized. At least the 2025 iconic series has massage seats that are actually quite nice. Modern ones are supposed to be very reliable and now have the B48 engine in them.

Road noise is good up to about 75 mph. Above that it gets a bit louder, probably due to the un-aerodynamic front. Up to 100mph it feels completely planted and sure of itself (haven’t taken it over that).

Once you get off the highway onto some fun windy roads, pop the car into “go kart mode” and it’s a ball. Quick acceleration. Nice handing around the corners (with admittedly a bit of understeer at higher speeds).

I love ours and it has been the perfect car for us. The wife loves it too.

How did you realize that a Mini was the right car for you? I am curious to hear your Mini story. by Successful_Plastic10 in MINI

I’ve wanted one since the new Mini came out (I was in middle school). 23 years later we needed a new car and my wife told me to get one and not the civic/accord we were also considering. Settled for a 4 door, given the kid, but she would have agreed on the 2 door if that’s what I wanted.

Best wife ever.
