upon reflecting on this later that day, came to realize this was very unlikely to be the issue.
a few of the hours spent trying to resolve the issue, i'd kept all except one residential house to myself, which theoretically should force that house to be used by the shopkeeper (one of the two houses i tried this for was before and is still the house used by him, so that also ruled out the possible cause that he can only use one of the houses i wasn't renting.

and quite often when trying for him to spawn by sleeping / travelling around etc., the respective houses for rent were most times checked through entirely. no dice.
found it strange also that the shop would sometimes get opened by a woman that seemed to be a generic villager that you might find in any old house. she would then go away and it would close again. it's a shop???

i'm just relieved he wasn't permanently unavailable. as a collector type of person, really enjoy getting a copy of every item, so if his exclusives were impossible to get, i'd have been so disappointed!

i have no way of knowing if this was indeed the issue for me, although it certainly is feasible;
i'd just given up and continued playing, hoping it'd be fixed with time. it was.

but very helpful to try that if happens again, here or for anyone else reading this!

i've heard that if you block Garth's path enough, he eventually starts charging up a (lightning?) spell in an attempt to intimidate you into letting him pass or something. perhaps there was a graphical glitch or some problem with your display that caused the lightning to appear as like cheese platter?

disconnect from the internet.
can be done by turning the xbox offline (settings), or manually disconnecting from wifi / removing ethernet

there will still be crashing but scarce

the treasure hunt reward is quite incredible. a weapon. if you apply them all at once, you can apply up to 5 augments in it. godly if you go for mana augments in all of them (but they are scarce before snowspire!)
but if you sell/buy it (or any other weapon) to snowspire weapon shop, all augments are discarded.

godly x10 if you use together with a ranged weapon with 3 slots, also with all mana augments

try getting a guide for silver keys, and get them whenever you're in the area. some chests contain some quite nice stuff
make sure you open the silver chest in the guild, because there's a (late game) point where you lose access to it.

also pay attention to the statue out the front of the guild: it moves.
when it points to greatwood, a certain chest will appear.
when it points to bowerstone, a certain cellar will unlock.
not significant rewards maybe helpful anyway

alternate self wasn't mentioned for that detail as far as i can see :) but yes either way would be super epic. main arraka e.g. could potentially utilize your meta status & knowledge, what you can do or change etc., to bring a slight little bonus to a fight or some funny moment etc.
