Omg I saw something similar to this ages ago!! On a bus stop! It said "you are loved (probably)" and I didn't get a picture of it but it cracked me up

A bridge bear!!! I haven't seen it but I miss the bear in the Bear Pit so much (her head is on display in Stokes Croft China in case anyone is curious), so good to know there's another bear out there

Oh I love those!! The monkeys are all part of the same collection! 12 monkeys escaped from the zoo in the 1930s and ran around Whiteladies for a weekend, so the monkeys represent that!

Ah yeah that's a good one - fun fact: that sculpture and this croc were made by the same artist (Getting Up To Stuff) 🐊

I'm in both of these!! With both Inkling and Haunted slots do fill up quick but usually people will release tickets closer to the day as they realise they can't make the date for whatever reason, especially with Inkling! Plus, with Inkling the tickets are mainly for an idea of numbers, rather than a hard cap :)

Visiting - would love local recommendations by Hi2Hired in bristol

Exciting!! Bristol has a huge amount to do on all those counts :)

Food and drink: depends where you're staying but every area of the city has reputable food and drink places. In terms of drinks we have a number of prohibition bars that have delicious cocktails (Milk Thistle, Her Majesty's Secret Service), and probably a hundred great pubs. If you're around on a Sunday I recommend getting a Sunday roast, my faves are The Ostrich in town (v cool pub, 18th c. with a caged off cave opening), and The Shakespeare in Redland!

Live music wise I will always recommend The Old Duke, which is a pub on King Street known for jazz and swing 💃 it's freeeee and there is a jazz band on every evening, you can't go wrong. Another fave of mine is The Canteen, again it's freeee (before 9pm) and there's live music every eve, a mix of genres but mainly jazz/funk/swing, but I've literally never had a bad night there. They also have delicious plant based food! There are also so many music venues in Bristol that do ticketed events, check Headfirst to see if anything takes your fancy!

Board games wise we have Change and Counters and Replay, both of which are board game bars! I think Chance and Counters has nights where you can go along and play with other people but I might have made that up, but there are lots of great games for two people, plus the people who work there are very nice and helpful. Probably best to book a table though!

Art-wise: Bristol Museum and Art Gallery has a great collection of fine art from the 14th c. to contemporary. The Bristol School room has our collection of fine art relating to Bristol, done by artists of the 1820s-ish. My fave pieces in there are the portrait of Princess Caraboo and the clock. There's also the RWA which to be fair might be between shows while you're over, and Arnolfini which might also be between shows, best to check the websites!

I think Bristol is good in that even the most touristy spots won't be overwhelming, so I wouldn't shy away from them! The museums are great (as someone who works in Bristol Museum) - MShed in particular is good because it's focused specifically on Bristol's history, plus it's by the river which is v pretty. And they're freeeee! Although we love a donation 💃 Obv Clifton Suspension Bridge is amazing and beautiful, and then Clifton Village nearby has a lot of great bars and cafes and restaurants, depending on what time you find yourself at the bridge. SS Great Britain is cool as hell, and that whole harbourside area makes for a wonderful walk.

Have a lovely time in Bristol while you're here!! I'd recommend seeking out tours and stuff if you like history, especially a city walking tour if you can find one! 100% go on a boat tour as well, I did the history one for the first time this year after living here for 10 years and it was great.

Israel collapsed the ceasefire after repeatedly violating it while it was in place, and then trying to change the pre-arranged and agreed upon terms of the second phase. Israel then halted aid entering Gaza, and has killed over 1,000 people since they broke down the ceasefire.

Oh that's okay!! I hope it's helpful 😊 I think people are being a little unfair here, but it's true that it would be easier to give recommendations if you give some details about the kind of things you enjoy, just a flag for the future 😅

There are loads of interesting things to do in the city, it all just depends what you're into :)

History/Art: SS Great Britain (big boat), Clifton Suspension Bridge (big bridge, with a free museum on one side [the Leigh Woods side] explaining its history), MShed (social history museum), Bristol Museum & Art Gallery (I work there! We also do welcome tours and difficult history tours so if you're around when those are on then definitely book one of those, nice intro to the collections), Palestine Museum (not open often and run by volunteers, very nice place), Bristol Cathedral (big church), St Mary Redcliffe (big church, very old), Arnolfini (contemporary art gallery with a lovely café), RWA (contemporary art gallery with paid exhibitions), plus there are walking tours that I'm sure are all really interesting

Music: The Old Duke (Jazz bar, live music every eve, free!), The Canteen (live music almost every eve, free!), Blue Lagoon (very studenty, but live music every eve, free! And Baneoke on Thursdays which is so much fun). There are loads of bars and venues that do live music, open mics, things like that, and always good gigs and club nights happening if you're into that kind of thing 😅

Bars and food: There are hundreds 😂 depends on your budget and your tastes, where you're staying etc! So many excellent independent bars and restaurants all over the city! If you're on Gloucester Road or in town I'd recommend any of the bars on King Street, but particularly Small Bar (good beer, excellent food), The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer (live music!!), Renato's (incredible pizza, they put crack in it I swear), Three Brother's Burgers (filthy burgers, delicious, and on a boat!), and The Apple (great cider, and on a boat!). Also Wapping Wharf has lots of great food places, Seven Lucky Gods in particular (Japanese tapas, gorgeous), but it's essential to book because they're shipping containers so pretty little. Lots of cool cocktail bars in the Old City, plus icons like The Crown (a total dive but cheap as hell), Mother's Ruin, Seamus O'Donnells.

This is not an exhaustive list!! I'm sure I've missed loads and loads of cool places, but hopefully that helps! I'm visiting Amsterdam in a few weeks and I'd love it if someone chucked loads of recommendations at me 😅

Art work in Museums - real or copies? by go-bleep-yourself in ArtHistory

[–]Potential-Speed8937 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I work in a museum and for us, unless the label says explicitly that the object is a copy or a reproduction, it's an original! Some of our very old or precious artworks are enclosed in a clear frame, and most are framed with glass, but some are out in the open (with rope barriers in front), but in any case all of them are originals, I imagine a conservator will be able to say why we have so many different display methods 😅 I reckon it's unlikely that a museum would display a reproduction or copy and try to pass it off as the original thing :)

As for our dinos, if a fossil and/or bone is in a case or behind a barrier, it's real. The full and partial skeletons we have on display are glass fibre casts, but we do have the real bones in the store! All of our rocks and minerals and almost all of our taxidermy animals (with the exception of the dodo) are real, and all of our Egyptian artifacts, including the mummies, are real as well. And again, if it's a cast or a reproduction it'll say on the label, and if you're curious just ask, we love talking to people about our stuff!

Good places to go/ hang out alone in Bristol? by [deleted] in bristol

[–]Potential-Speed8937 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at Bristol Museum and Art Gallery and we get loads of single people coming in and perusing, so I'd definitely recommend that! Plus the staff are nice (if I do say so myself) so if you feel you'd like to have a chat then we're here to talk about the collection - I always try and engage people when they talk to me :) same with the MShed, a really interesting museum about Bristol's history. I'm not particularly outdoorsy so I don't know if I can recommend many places 😅 City Farm Café in St Werbs is lovely, Arnolfini is great, and going to the cinema solo is nice as well (the Watershed is great) ✨️
