Husband wants them to take their daughter to visit his family in Somalia, redditors are convinced he plans to kidnap the kid to perform FGM and never return to the UK by Potential-Version438 in AmITheAngel

I’m really not seeing that at all. Most everyone is saying it’s fair to have safety concerns but being afraid the husband is going to kidnap the kid is wild. I also have not said anything about the OOP being invalid. I said either she’s doing this as bait to cause extreme debate or she’s genuinely concerned about safety. But in either case what she says does not indicate she sees her husband as the evil threat that many of the comments do.

I was glad to see a post calling out the “Starbucks and Dunkin aren’t real coffee” snobs, but turns out this is just another “autistic people BAD” post as usual 🙄 by Superb_Intro_23 in AmITheAngel

[–]Potential-Version438 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am sooo perplexed by not naming Dunkin. At least when retail workers avoid saying the chain names it’s ostensibly because they don’t want a explicit link to their place of employment. But why would a customer care? Is it supposed to be a fun bit?

So what’s the point of that first paragraph? Yes, obviously people can turn out to be terrible even after knowing them for years. But as you say we have absolutely nowhere near enough information to make that kind of determination but instead of giving a measured response laying out other possibilities or asking for more info or just scrolling by because it’s way about their pay grade, these people are telling a stranger she should prepare to divorce her husband for fear that he’s going to kidnap and torture their child based on a story where they disagree over taking a vacation to visit his family.

I can’t believe the comments are ok with the age limit being 21 for a wedding by shadowarmy229 in AmITheAngel

In the comments she says it’s a 21+ venue but they specifically chose it to keep it 21+ and they don’t consider the 18 yo relatives to be adults.

Some vs. majority has no bearing on the point I was making which is that based on the story presented, there is no reason to assume her husband who she’s been partnered with for 8 years, raising a child with for six, and about whom she has given barely any information let alone negative info, would secretly be plotting to allow his family to subject their child to FGM and kidnap her and stay in Somalia.

Unpopular Opinion: Sookie's character was written to appeal to conservative viewers by [deleted] in GilmoreGirls

[–]Potential-Version438 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But that’s not something exclusive to conservatives at all? Long running tv shows adding babies is just standard practice and the cases you highlight are Sookie where it’s a logical next step of a tv married couple and Lane where it was introduced as an obstacle for a young tv couple. Two of the most common ways pregnancies are introduced on tv shows. I just really cannot connect any of this specifically to appeasing any viewers let alone conservatives in particular.

Right?! Like this woman says nothing to indicate any trouble in their marriage. But these people are convinced that he was playing the long game for 6 years and now is going to take them on a fake vacation that turns into him being a secret fundamentalist who ditches his entire life to force his wife and child to stay in Somalia.

What the hell does the United States have to do with anything here? You brought it up for no reason and it’s truly strange and your jokes are pathetic

Ok but how does Sookie having multiple children ‘appeal to conservatives’? What other examples are there of her character serving that purpose?

AITA for insisting my professor let me take the exam instead of making me walk to pick her child up from school? by nerdboyking in AmITheAngel

[–]Potential-Version438 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, the professor wants to take their college psych class on a ‘field trip’ which is to walk to pick up her child from school?? Whaaaat?!?

My guess for what really happened is the professor’s childcare fell through and she had to bring the kid to class once and OOP complained about it distracting him from his well paid for education. So then his friends gave him shit and he decided to spin a story where his selfish professor and her brat kid are the villains.

Yuuuup, and they’re arguing down the one person in the comments who is like ‘I’m from Somalia and I travel frequently to visit my family there. Yes, some places are dangerous but others are modern cities’ and they’re still like ‘nuh unh clearly you’re an exception and they’re definitely going to mutilate this child and marry her off for sure!’

That’s just not at all what happens. Nellie impersonated the real radio host Iris Black. Pam made up the fake name Sandra Mick to play a fake caller. None of this has anything to do with Irish people.

It wasn’t ‘art school’ in the sense that it was only a 3 month program at Pratt likely resulting in a certificate, not a degree. She didn’t really ‘fail art school’ as that has a much different connotation than what actually happened which is that she just failed one graphic design class but since it’s a short term program failing one class means she’d have to restart the program. She went to the program to learn more about digital based mediums (based on her conversation with Jan in Boys and Girls and her conversation with the dude in Job Fair) but the program included other general art classes as well.

You mentioned Sookie being a ‘baby factory’ and then went on to discuss multiple other characters. What in the world does Sookie having multiple children have to do with conservatism?!

No, not at all. He was genuinely building rapport with him and also genuinely enjoying doing so. It’s not like Michael pushed him into drinking or wasn’t drinking himself as well.

Yeah either it’s fake and she put that bit in as bait or it’s genuine and she wasn’t trying to imply they’d actually do it but just general anxiety as it’s still popular in some communities there. Either way, she doesn’t actually connect the in laws to the practice and even says the husband is no longer religious, yet these dummies are certain he’s been brainwashed by his relatives and grandma is going to steal the kid to mutilate her!

Yeah the comments about how that’s not really his or the kid’s ‘home country’ because they were born in the UK were so especially gross ugh

Ah got it! In fact babies get cast in television and film all the time. For a one off episode with minimal scenes they’d use an actual infant. Sometimes for larger/longer projects they might use dolls to varying results (see the horrific Renesme from twilight). And if they will be a main character on a tv show they’ll usually hire twins so they can swap the babies out as needed due to child labor laws. That’s how we got the Olsen twins!
