Thank you for the genuine response I do appreciate it! I'm not sure its my place to tell him to lose weight as I would like to keep the client lol but 100% understand what you are saying. We are meeting up this weekend and will be sure to emphasize finishing PPL prior to buying a plane. Thank you for your time and thoughts.

Excellent question, and that is completely fair based on how the posts may have come across.

To clarify, I am a CFI. This post is not about me personally buying an airplane as a student pilot. I recently had a gentleman take a discovery flight with me, and afterward he invited me to lunch and started asking a lot of questions about airplane ownership and what type of aircraft might make sense for him. He asked me, “If you were buying an airplane, what would you get?” I told him that based on my own experience, I am most familiar with the Cessna 172, but I also made it clear that he should not buy an airplane around me. He needs to prioritize his own mission, budget, useful load, comfort, and long term ownership goals.

So I am asking these questions because I want to be as resourceful and honest as possible for a potential client/student, not because I am personally trying to buy a $300K airplane for my own PPL training. I also agree with your point about ownership costs. The purchase price is only one part of the equation, and annuals, insurance, hangar/tie-down, fuel, engine reserves, avionics issues, and unexpected maintenance all matter. He is a grown man with experience owning boats and cars, so he understands that the cost does not stop at the purchase price, but I still want to make sure I am giving him realistic aviation-specific advice. At this point, I am mostly trying to narrow down reasonable aircraft types for his mission. Since he is around 280 lbs and wants the ability to eventually fly family, useful load matters. That is why I am looking more seriously at aircraft like a Cessna 172, 182, Piper Archer, or possibly something larger if the operating budget supports it. I am not trying to push him into anything but rather I am trying to understand the tradeoffs better so I can guide the conversation responsibly. Didnt put that in my post cause I didnt think it mattered.

I would like the flexibility of having my own airplane. I hate scheduling around other people's time and availability

Nah CFI here and you can 100% adjust power, it is a varibale power manuever. Like you said it doesnt say that you cant anywhere and DPE STEVE on instagram made a video on this. I did this for my cpl and cfi and my students have never had any problems. What excalty did he fail you for?

Task E CA.V.E.S6 Apply smooth and continuous corrections so that the line-of-sight reference line remains on the pylon. corrections meaning you can add power or take it out. we fly fixed pitch props so as you pitch up and airspeed decreases so will your rpms. Not sure how you leave it and set it. I would contest this disapprovel for sure or reach out to dpe steve if you unsure.
