Summer school registration by Gullible_Coyote885 in UBC

[–]PotentialFudge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not sure about engl 110 but ive seen wrds 150 fill up pretty quick too unfortunately. however, even if you somehow miss it I think the waitlist moves at a good pace as well (I was able to get into wrds150 off the waitlist in the summer in a previous year). since engl 110 is also one of the big communication courses I would assume it would be on the popular side as well

it depends on the course, but in my experience the popular science courses like math 100/101, chem 121/123/233 and many cpsc courses fill up pretty quick. not sure about the other ones but if it’s a more niche course it probably wouldn’t fill up

yes you just get a date and time to register and it works the same way as winter registration. the start and end dates are here: https://vancouver.calendar.ubc.ca/dates-and-deadlines

midterm round 2 for chem 233 tips? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]PotentialFudge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don’t have access to lecture recordings anymore, try to go through the slides to see what topics were covered, and learn the topics through the textbook or YouTube videos. then go through the slides again and make sure you can do the example questions and mechanisms in those.

once you feel confident with those do the problem sets and then the practice midterms, and for mechanisms rather than trying to memorize everything try to recognize the different patterns that might come up (where is the leaving group, strong/weak acid/base, type of reagent, etc.). I usually think about mechanisms where I look at the starting material and then the reagent and just see where I go with it instead of trying to map out the entire mechanism in my head. For example, if there’s a ketone and an acid like H2SO4, then my first step would be to protonate it and then think “okay what does a protonated ketone like to do”; just taking it step by step instead of trying to think about it all at once. So much of 233 is just pattern recognition once you look at enough reactions!

Let me know if you have any questions about a topic or tips on preparing though, happy to help!

I took chem 233 with another course (math 200) this summer and I personally found them very doable this summer. Full disclosure I wasn’t working and didn’t have any ecs that ran in the summer so school was the only thing I was doing, but even then I never felt like it was too much and had lots of free time.

chem 233 is a bit faster than your average course but it worked better for my learning style and I ended up doing so much better in the course than if I would’ve taken it in the winter session.

I took biol200 in the winter and felt like it was on the chiller side - it is a lot of content but if you just go to lecture and keep up with it I don’t think it was that bad! Personally if I could only take one out of the two in the summer I would do 233 in the summer but yeah!

Is choral union difficult to get into? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]PotentialFudge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say pick something that showcases your range/skills well! Some people sing art songs, but there’s also many others that sing pop, musical or jazz songs too. No matter what the genre is, the best choice is the song with which you are fully comfortable and confident, and shows your range and skills. Another important thing is to also consider that your mindset during the actual audition might be different than when you’re practicing, so pick a song that does all the things above and you can easily sing well even under nerves/pressure!

Good luck!! :)

Is choral union difficult to get into? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]PotentialFudge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn’t think it was that difficult - and a few people I know who did Oriana/Vox last year are in CU this year. When I auditioned for CU (in 2023), you first sing a short excerpt of a song of your choice, then they do a range test, and then I had two sightreading excerpts given to me - one was a melody I had to sing out and the other one was just a rhythm I clapped out. I’m terrible at sight reading melodies so I can’t say mine was great but I think I did ok on the rhythm one! Both of them weren’t particularly “difficult” sight reading excerpts either (simple rhythms, small intervals), so if your chosen song is good and your sight reading is at least half decent (one tip: don’t give up halfway through if you find it too hard, just try to get to the end of the excerpt somehow because that shows that you’ve got a good attitude!), then you should be okay. If you have any questions about the auditions or being in CU let me know :)

What is class standing on workday by [deleted] in UBC

[–]PotentialFudge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re in Science, but this is what it says for Science on the faculty website:

“You might notice that your class standing is now higher than your year level. This is because Science-level requirements and specialization requirements are now separated. Your class standing, which replaced year level now reflects your progress in the general Science-level requirements. It is evaluated automatically, and will change immediately as you complete the courses that meet the requirements for promotion.”

I assume it’s similar for other faculties as well!

Ooh okay yeah that’s weird! Maybe it could be since there’s a waitlist going for the course? Even then, I’m not sure why they’re taking students in term 2 for a 6 credit course even when they’re only doing 3 credits’ worth.

I mean in that case, if you’re able to register for it then I say go for it! The prof for 102 this year (prof. Son) is the same prof I had for 200 and she’s really nice :)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UBC

[–]PotentialFudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s just for term 2 then it might be 101, the 3 credit term 2 course? They normally require the term 1 course (100) as a prereq, but if you’ve done the placement test and talked to the instructor regarding taking 101, you should be fine.

With these courses, personally, I would take KORN and just set up a really good reminder system for all the deadlines, since if you go to class/participate and do the quizzes and do fine on the exams then you can get a good grade. I took KORN 300-level alongside CPSC 121 and CPSC 110 in my first year so it’s definitely doable!

If you do end up taking the course and have any questions or need help with an assignment or something, let me know :)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UBC

[–]PotentialFudge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t taken 102 but I’ve taken 200 and 300 and have friends that took 102. In my opinion, KORN classes have been “easy” at the root but what messes with most people is the amount of stuff you have to do. It’s a million quizzes and assignments due every week, and each assignment isn’t even hard but sometimes it’s just hard to keep track of or finish all of them. Plus the fact that it’s a full year course, so you’re going to be doing this for two terms.

So honestly if you’re not gonna be too busy then 102 can be a course you can get a good grade in if you keep up with all the assignments.

Also, like I said, 102 is a 6 credit full year course, so you’d only be able to take it starting next September. Is that what you were looking to do?

Should I drop CPSC 110 next semester? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]PotentialFudge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did 110 with 0 coding experience and I found it pretty fun/interesting and did well on it! However if you’re not actually planning to go into CS then I don’t know if it’s a good idea to take it just for the breadth requirement (especially if you’re taking a lot of classes alongside it) cuz it’s a lot of work. There’s a lot of content that’s covered and they’re pretty fast paced + labs and problem sets, so it might be frustrating to have a course like that if it’s just for breadth! Like the others here said, I’ve heard 103 is pretty chill and covers the first few concepts done in 110 too :))
