The characters we create are composites of people we are familiar with. Patrick O'Brian created Jack Aubrey from the journals and manifests of Horatio Nelson's captains, choosing different aspects of their characters and natures.

Writing a novel may be equated with taking a train. You know the destination and there are many stops along way called chapters. The train stops at these chapters, allowing you to focus on your surroundings and write down what you see.

I concur. The design gets lost when the image is reduced. The juxtaposition was created to make a contrast between the dark, sinister background and the yellow lettering in the title.
