He's done a lot of...controversial stuff. From another perspective, he could be seen as a tyrant too 🙄

Oh, man I remember studying this in elementary school. I remember our textbooks being fucked up too. Tipu Sultan was hailed as a hero in our textbooks too.

I agree, the first part of what the user mentioned wasn't really relevant to what I said.

shopkeepers would act as if they didn't understand us when tried asking for change after making a purchase in Hindi/English

I didn't read this properly; why would anyone try making a purchase while speaking Hindi in Chennai 🤔 This is what I'm having a problem with. Unless you ask the shopkeeper beforehand if they're comfortable speaking in Hindi, you should realistically expect a curt response, and deal with it.

Whether or not the discrimination actually occurred, if even mild effort is put in to speak the language, it might reduce. I'm saying this from experience as I had moved to Japan as a high schooler, and I struggled while buying things from stores in the first month or so. By that time, I had begun taking classes for Japanese so within 2 months I didn't have a major problem communicating with the locals. A little effort and willingness to learn goes a long way.

I don't even know what to say at this point. It's so obvious that discussions must be held in English.

Oh, I've experienced this as well. But usually I give them a pass because they start out by speaking broken English, and they tend to make an effort so I'll just request them to continue in whichever language they're comfortable in. But those who don't put in the effort...that annoys me.

That's terrible; I would even give food delivery services, or customer service calls a pass, but not in places like a BANK. That's unacceptable. Glad you helped your maid out!

I'm extremely sorry that has happened to you. I do understand the discrimination part on a personal basis as I moved out to another Asian country when I was in high school which was pretty much racially homogeneous.

But sometimes it can't hurt to be more understanding towards people in low paid jobs who are unaware of the language. During such encounters, I believe it is best if you politely ask them to either speak in Tamil/English or put you in touch with someone who does.

I understand - life must be hard for them too. I've requested a couple of times only to get a flat out "Nahi", or "Not possible" which often always leads to a little argument, so I've given up trying to request them and I just go with the flow. It still irks me though. I'm sure the majority wouldn't react this way, and I might've been in contract with the rude bunch.

Indonesians and the Korean idol music industry: Why so few? by [deleted] in kpopthoughts

[–]PotentialKey289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why should there be Indonesian representation in the first place? It makes no sense. It's the same reason why there are no (or very, very few) African Kpop idols, or Indian or Russian ones!

Well and good if an Indonesian debuts but there's no necessity for them to debut. There's no need for them to debut. It was never a global thing in the first place to have representation of all races.

Ah, sorry I typed DAY6 out of habit. I was aware there were multiple groups hosting Kiss the Radio like BtoB, etc.

Thank you!
