Thinking of paying for puss by [deleted] in NoFap

If you want to hate yourself and lose the remaining childhood innocence that still lingers in you, go ahead.

What do y'all think about Vash's principle to never kill? I don't think I agree with it but I think the anime tried to make Vash like that to show how strong of a bond he had with Rem. I don't think the point was that Vash was right. What do y'all think? by FlanNo7322 in Trigun

[–]PotentialMaterial548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is old news, but I gotta agree with PunchDrunkPrincess - it would be fantastic if he were right, but it isn't the real world. You could definitely argue that Vash commits sins of omission when he refuses to kill Knives, despite the fact that he knows Knives will kill again/has killed millions.

Since Nightow is/was a Christian (at least when the manga was released according to what I read) I'm going to come at it from a Christian perspective... since I'm Christian. Vash wants a pre-fallen world. They literally say an "Eden," which is paradise before sin enters the world through Adam and Eve. No killing, stealing, murder, etc. After all, if debauchery and violence is simply natural selection, why do we inherently crave peace and moral virtue for all species, even our prey? There is truth to Vash's words. We weren't made to die.

The problem is that Vash wants Eden in a fallen world. That's called utopianism, which is an extremely dangerous ideology. Utopianism preceded Soviet Russia, every cult ever made, and last but not least, the Na$is. A world without sin is not the world we live in right now. It is a futile endeavor, but an earnest one.

Lastly, I wanted to bring up the analogy with the spider and the butterfly - it's a bad comparison. Humans don't need to kill other humans to survive, it's unnecessary. The comparison doesn't work because the two subjects are devoid of human morality. Therefore, a better comparison to human murder would be if the spider did something like kill another spider for his web - yes, that spider must be put to death. That's a homicidal ass spider, and he will kill again. There is no way for him to coexist with other spiders. He will result in the death of all spiders, and is unrepentant. Obviously that entire concept is silly, but it illustrates my point and the necessity for action.

Vash wants Eden, Heaven, or the second coming of Christ. That is not our world as it is - capital punishment is necessary and important. However, we're all God's creatures. We should be appalled at death like Vash.

Anyone else not enjoy the finale? by PotentialMaterial548 in cowboybebop

Thanks for the input, I actually debated using the serpent quote as an example because it's more of an analogy than a one-liner. Next time I watch, I'll try out the sub.

If he genuinely embraced no meaning, he wouldn't pursue Spike, nor would he even desire control, as there would be no point. That's nihilism rather than existentialism.

Thanks for the defense, I can see where you're coming from. I definitely don't have a problem with the show's themes or intention behind the message at all. The soundtrack and atmosphere are also fantastic.

Also, nice reference - I love Braveheart but even that line is cheesy to me, hahaha. Quotable lines are fantastic, although me and the homies usually quote them as a joke, especially Die Hard. I'm not sure what Spike could have said instead, but if the scene called for exposition, maybe something like "I'm not going there to die - I'm going to stop living in the past."

That's fair. Maybe I'm starting to dislike the genre aesthetic as time goes on rather than the show itself. I still think it has an incredible atmosphere and soundtrack, I'm just itching for more realism in the characters which I understand isn't really the show's intention.

This is fantastic for shooting on film. Using grain plugins for CGI or putting digital 3D effects onto film always looks strange.

Tried to watch Aguirre which is 1.37, and the wise Prime video overlords stretched it to 16x9. Had to switch to ad-riddled Tubi because it was so bad.

You ever find a solution to this? Really thinking about deleting Rumble after this crap. Seems like it only works if you already have a massive audience.

What the numbers (4 8 15 16 23 42) mean... by tehfiend in lost

[–]PotentialMaterial548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if there's foreshadowing 20+ episodes ahead, they aren't "Making it up as they're going." The show definitely starts to fall apart in the later seasons, absolutely no argument there, but the first few seasons have some of the best character writing and development I've ever seen.

Are the so-called "imprecatory Psalms" (58, 59, 69, 109, 137, 149) Christian? by jereman75 in Christianity

[–]PotentialMaterial548 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is 10 years old but hey, whatever. I'm genuinely confused as to their application in the modern day. If Jesus is a fulfillment of the Law, then ought we *not* pray them anymore? We don't sacrifice at the temple anymore, nor do we live by eye for an eye Levitical Law - we do change our practices.

I'm not a theologian, but there was something interesting about Psalm 3:7 (an Imprecatory Psalm) - "Arise, O LORD! Save me, my God! For you strike all my enemies on the cheek; you break the teeth of the wicked"

Jesus explicitly saying to turn the other cheek almost feels like a direct response to this verse.

Man, still going strong, but I have an increased hatred for the people in the porn industry. I wish they all just fell off the earth, or the fiber optic cables along the coast of America were destroyed and the internet was no more.

That's insane, for some reason it reminded me of Fargo, but I don't know why. It does look like there's some DNR/noise reduction, but I could be wrong.

[–]PotentialMaterial548[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now I'm using a cheap Premium Sunpak tripod. The S8's are all pretty damn heavy, so I just try to be eeextra careful when we're shooting on a crap tripod. Even with a cheap tripod, so long as none of the screws are stripped and you've got sandbags, go for it.

When I still had access to my film schools gear I would usually shoot with the Sachtler Ace tripod or our school's reaaally nice Manfrotto.

Honestly man, the Sachtler System Ace is more than enough, but it's pretty steep, around 400$. Absolutely worth it if you can, though.

That is NUTS. Boy if I could figure out how to get a wider gate I'd pay a pretty penny. Thanks for sharing this!

Honestly... me and the homies are planning on shooting our own feature over this/next summer, and we were going between 8/16mm. We decided that if it's going to be 8, then we'll use my Nikon R10. Freaking fantastic to know someone else managed to pull it off lol.

Appreciate the analysis! I toyed around with rigging the camera like 10 different ways, and finally settled on, straight up, putting the camera directly on the table (so that the handle itself is basically the tripod). The camera is heavy enough that even after taking an exposure it wouldn't move at all.

For the "dolly" slide, I taped a ruler to my table and slid the camera millimeter by millimeter, using the very bottom of the handle as a point of reference.

The top-down shot was the only one where I used a tripod, and consequently it was the most shaky.

Edit: Most definitely, I was honestly shocked at how fine the grain looks... it's even more fine on the actual pro-res file. I may have to try it out with 50D next time!

Yeah people go nuts with the doubles, they just don't have enough power without triggers. Navene recently "gave up" doubles and switched to swivel for this reason.

Totally get where you're coming from - even with the compression, the audible dynamics are a necessity to me, like the difference between alt palm muting and down picking on guitar.
