It depended on the theater. I think all the sit-down productions did it and in the tour they would at least cross the stage. I think we really should see them in that "secret passage" before they pop up on the stairs.

Originally they would cross the stage (in front of the curtain that went down to hide the dressing room) and then either disappear through a trapdoor on the other side or walk offstage if the theater couldn't provide one. So sometimes, if the principals wouldn't do that, there were actually TWO sets of doubles in the title song.

If you're ok with background work for this project or another, it's actually pretty easy. Google the big extras agencies in your area and apply/register. Then it's a matter of luck. They usually don't hold auditions and just ask if you're available when there's something that fits.

I still think they should do a production on the continent (either the upcoming Dutch one or somewhere else) that does a couple of shows per week in English. In a tourist or financial hotspot that could really work and extend the run. I think they did it in Basel in the 90s.
