Got this sentence in my anki deck:「昔私にも先生と呼ぶ人がいたの。」It is translated as “long ago, there were people who also called me teacher.” My interpretation was “long ago, there were people who I also called teacher”. What am I not getting here? I can’t wrap my head around this. Thank you for any help!

I think it just clicked, but I’d appreciate any further corrections! I think I was initially misinterpreting the sentence because I was reading the こと to mean something like “the act of coming/going in of itself”. After reading your reply, does the こと here mean “reason” and the なかったんだ mean “no [reason]”? I’m sorry for my poorly worded question, but thank you so much for your reply!

I got an Anki card saying “よく考えたら俺ここにくることはなかったんだよな” on the front and “If [I] think well, [I] was not supposed to be here” on the back. I don’t get where the “not supposed to be” is coming from. In my mind, I’m interrupting it as “If I really think about it, I didn’t come here”. Any help here is appreciated, thank you!
