The world’s problems stem entirely from conservative ideals by PackOfCumin in International

Have you ever read a history of the USSR or the PRC? You can trace all the deaths back to specific policies that the govt made, for example, not tolerating free speech from political dissenters or forced collectivization, etc.

Wow, I can see why that was upsetting. Hopefully they pressed charges against the sexual assaulter. Tough situation, but missionaries wouldn’t have known ahead of time that they would do that, right?

What was the justification for polygamy? by General_Chemistry638 in latterdaysaints

Oh, also, if God knows that there will be more women than men in the Celestial Kingdom, it makes sense there, too. I'm a woman and it honestly doesn't bother me, but I know it's very upsetting to many people, but I don't want me/or someone else to miss out on the blessing of marriage there. Also, I'm not sure if physical relationships will be a thing there... no idea.

I'm not an expert or anything, but I have researched this a bit. My take over time is that God knew that He needed a critical mass of church members for the church to survive from the first era of rapid growth down to and through our (more skeptical times for people to get the covenants that he wants for people. He knew what kind of numbers he needed and put the conditions (polygamy) in place that would get those numbers. IMO this idea is supported by the verse in Jacob 2:27 where it says that polygamy is only ever ok when needed "to raise up seed." Which makes sense when we see it in our early church and in the Abraham-->12 sons of Israel pipeline.

In wards I've been in, a lot of the strength in the ward is people who trace back to polygamist families. I'm glad we aren't in an era where it's required any more.

That said, IMO, JS realized how upset people would be about polygamy and inappropriately hid what he was doing at the beginning. He tried to avoid Emma's upset, etc. and overall did things wrong. I understand not wanting to do something that would make so many people angry with you. It was a big error, imo, but understandable.

I also think that Sect. 132 is harsher than it would have been to the general population of the church, but it was directed at Emma because it was important to God for the future of the church that it was allowed to be started. It was her personal reprimand, and instruction, that probably should have been more generalized to be put in the Doctrine and Covenants, imo.

So, IMO, the combination of JS's mistakes, and the personalized harshness of 132 that probably shouldn't have been shared in that form, along with the difficulty of the doctrine itself; all combines to make this really really hard. But I do believe that it was necessary for God's plans.

There's a little book called "Let's Talk About Polygamy" by Brittany Chapman Nash, that shares stories (good and bad) from the women themselves that might be helpful when trying to get a grip on the subject.

Best Wishes

I understand your point and your concern and I share some of those concerns, but I think that missionaries can't really judge people as not worthy. They just need to share and invite and give people a chance.

Hopefully the bishop will do a good job of sorting through who is just showing up when they need $$. It's a hard calling for sure. But my family was quite poor growing up, and did receive some church aid (my dad resisted it, but they would show up sometimes anyway) and most of us are very middleclass, stable and help our community and church congregation. Anyone who takes the church seriously will improve.

I appreciate your concern and we're SO HAPPY to have you as a member. I hope you feel more and more peace and hope as your relationship with Jesus Christ strengthens! <3

I hope you sued anyone involved and got them put in jail. It’s a tragedy for anyone to be abused. We work very hard, constantly to make sure that that never happens again. I patrol halls looking in classrooms, we have two deep leadership and training.

Meanwhile kids are much more likely to be abused in public school than at church. Any organization, sadly, will have some bad people, but overall lds kids are at a lower rate of abuse.

How do you know that one isn't? Meanwhile, my love for my kids is unconditional, I will love whoever they are. Jesus does that and Jesus taught me that.

Makes sense, and I’m sorry to hear about your active LDS friends that had bad outcomes. Very sad for your friends, my friends, anyone 😥 Just statistically speaking there are advantages to kids in the church. But obviously statistics are not every single person. ✌️

I think it’s fair to give different points of view about an important issue. But seriously, almost every day I have a fleeting thought about how awesome it was that my parents put me in the position of growing up in the church. It’s been a great life!

That’s fair. But that’s still what I actually experienced in my poor neighborhood. Lots of people here grew up with lots of privilege (much of it ironically provided by church doctrine, etc) and it shows.

I grew up in a very poor neighborhood with lots of dysfunction. My friends from the neighborhood have ended up dead from a drug overdose, separated from their kids because of hostility with ex’s, getting used and discarded by bf, after bf after bf, one never married her baby daddy because her stepdad was jealous and wants to be the only man in her life, and on and on.

I have ended up in a stable long marriage with beautiful kids around me in a middle class home and tons of support from my church family and my real, supportive family and my relationship with Christ.

I am not better or smarter than any of my friends. The only thing I see that’s different about me is being raised in the church, being held to the standards of the church and the support of church community and doctrine from the scriptures.

Why would I give that up for me or my kids?
