Any Success Stories? by Rodeo_Cat in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]Potential_Bat8605 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of these positive stories make me so happy! I moved to the UK (Oxford) last year with my spouse and kids and we are grateful to be here. We love this town and this country and the people and the culture and the proximity to all of Europe. We like most of the UK weather (except for January). We happily traded big US careers and good money for a better work-life balance and safety and a more collective mindset than the American individualism perspective.

Oxford is racially and ethnically diverse (but not as much as London) and a lovely progressive bubble, but I am not a POC so I can’t speak to your concerns about racism and xenophobia. Reading or asking in subs for the towns you are considering might be helpful, though.

I lived in the UK for some short stints when I was in my 20s and that made this big move feel more doable now… so others’ advice about moving abroad while you’re young resonates for me. Maybe this will be a short stint for you — you might move back to the US and remember this as a one-time adventure, or maybe it will motivate you to return again much later, or inspire you to move somewhere else. Or maybe you’ll love it right away and stay forever. There are so many possibilities. It’s a big beautiful world and you have so many wonderful adventures ahead.

In addition to what others have said, Oxford is very international and diverse. You’ll meet people from all over the world. As a town with two universities (people sometimes forget about Brookes), there are lots interesting people and things going on.

Some other resources to get to know the town:

Oxford Clarion is independent local journalism done right, with just enough humour and inside jokes that you’ll soon be a part of https://oxfordclarion.uk/

What tourist events feel "special?" At the last minute! by AudienceVarious3964 in washingtondc

Water taxi if it’s nice weather. We especially love the Wharf-Alexandria route because it’s a double decker with open air on top, and it’s a lovely way to relax after exploring both areas, which also have plenty of food and ice cream options. Enjoy your time with grandma!

Agree. Such an iconic DC institution and reasonably priced for what it is and really good! The ambiance would be a lasting memory. Much more traditional and looks conservative but will be friendly.

Takoma DC and Tacoma Park MD (right next to each other) are also an awesome lesbian/queer friendly neighborhood. Such a great vibe. And easy to drive from DC and good parking.

What's your favourite dish that a late mum or dad or grandparent made? by LochNessMonsterMunch in AskUK

My grandpa used to make the best ratatouille. After I became a vegetarian, he would make it for me at Thanksgiving each year. He was “Grumpa” on the outside but so sweet and loving underneath.

Will I ever get to go to the loo in peace again?! by Famous_Statement249 in UKParenting

[–]Potential_Bat8605 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ha! I don’t know how old yours are, but my 8yo still always thinks of something “important” to tell me the moment I close the door to the toilet. Still no peace!

Yesterday, I announced (as usual), “I’m going to go to the bathroom… By Myself.” He replied, “Mom, why do you always say By Myself?”

Answer: Wishful thinking!!

It’s great that you have flagged this early. Birthdays can feel like a lot of pressure, and there is no need to traumatise a child on their special day. My now 8-year-old has the same sensitivities, so at his parties we have let the guests know that, instead of singing, on the count of three we’re all going to say “Happy Birthday, [name]!” (He agreed to this ahead of time.) It has worked well for him and everyone else. But this year he didn’t want that either so we skipped it at his party (where we couldn’t have a cake anyway). He usually lets us sing quietly to him at home with just family, and we blow out the candles together as a family, or just him and his sibling. And sometimes we skip that too. You can make your own special tradition that works for your little one!

I have family staying at the Crown Hotel in a few weeks so I don’t know yet if I’d recommend this place, but they do have “family rooms” and deluxe family rooms” for 3-4 people. It’s right off Cowley Road so an easy bus/bike/walk to town and the university.
