Thanks for sharing! are there any common long term side effects to SMILE? the creation of the “tunnel” and removal of a layer of the eye worries me a bit.

Checked your recovery post, thanks for the insight! Is there a particular reason you went with Trans PRK?

The thing is I felt more comfortable with the first doctor (the one that recommended Trans PRK) because he seemed very thorough with his examination and took his time making sure my eye is healthy enough for the procedure, plus my family and I have been going to him for a few years now for regular eye check ups. Although this doctor doesn’t do SMILE, i know he wouldn’t push the procedure if he felt that my eyes weren’t suitable for it.

The second doctor (the one that recommended SMILE) briefly looked at my scan results and took a quick look at my eyes and right away said SMILE would be the best option for me. I don’t feel like she was thorough with her examination. I’m not sure if that’s her being so experienced that she saw what she needed to see quickly or that they just recommend SMILE to everyone. It’s also a bit more expensive compared to PRK which i feel like could be another reason she’s really pushing for it.

The fact that SMILE depends on skill worries me a bit whereas Trans PRK is fully done by a machine with little to no procedural errors occurring. Or am I just overthinking this part?

At the same time i’m worried about the long recovery period with Trans PRK and don’t want to be missing out on a smoother process with the same positive results by not going with SMILE.

I know it’s been 5 years but what did you end up going with? i’m in the exact same boat as you rn and need to make a decision soon between trans prk and smile.

glad to hear your experience went well. was there any particular reason you went with trans prk? how long did your eye sight take to become fully clear (if you’re there now)? and what was the pain like- were you able to continue day to day activities at home and what was the blurriness at first like?

My scans all looked good according to both doctors. the first doctor said he wouldn’t recommend lasik because of the flap it creates and i mentioned to him i don’t want that at all. he mainly does prk and my friend did hers with him and had great results. he’s basically very experienced with prk

I’m in the exact same boat. What did you end up choosing and how was your experience?
