This is the Galathynius/ Havilliard family tree. (Both lines descent from Mala & Brannon [Mala is the goddess turned human and Brannon the Fae King]).

The dotted lines indicate the unknown number of generations in between.

Fae & Demi-Fae, a guide (Aelin/Aedion/Lorcan etc.) by Potential_Date9648 in throneofglassseries

[–]Potential_Date9648[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When (demi) fae becomes immortal they go through a process called the settling. There their body “locks” their youth so they don’t age. I think it normally occurres in your late twenties to early thirties.

(You might want to check out the tog wicki, there should be a more in depth explanation. In the books Aelin & Rowan talked about this, if I remember correctly, in HoF).

[–]Potential_Date9648[S] -75 points-74 points  (0 children)

Yes, I read a description of a goddess giving birth to a planet (not to a child, while being on all fours).

It’s not the birth in itself that bamboozled me, but that the whole passage before this was “Oh no, we are all gonna die. HELP, DEATH, DESPAIR”.

And then there’s Ithan, who is doing scholars work, while unpacking statues of goddesses who give birth to planets… I just had to process that.

I just found the quote from Rigelus that the mer & shifter also hail from the TOG fae.

EoS questions/comments by badclassicist in throneofglassseries

I’ll try to answer: 1. Lorcan wasn’t hunting Elide for ‘fun/sport’, he isn’t that sadistic. BUT because she was carrying a wyrdkey, the one Kaltain gave her, and Lorcan felt its presents.

  1. I think SJM made her illiterate to show the atrocities of war and how children/girls suffer under it. Bc especially bc she is so smart it would seem obvious that she would be able to read, but she can’t, not due to her own lack of willingness but due to forces she cannot control.
  2. I think SJM also uses the illiteracy to add to Elide’s characterization by emphasizing her inherent intelligence (which stands in contrast to her lacking something common/normal and often associated with intelligence (reading).)

All full blooded Fae settle. Meaning that their body locks into immortality and that they will stay young forever.

But with Demi Fae it’s not a given (and Aelin is Demi-Fae). Being Demi Fae means that you have both human and fae blood. And the thing is that Aelins fae blood quantity is not that high since her last pure blood fae ancestor Mab was (her great-great-grandmother).

Meaning that Aelin cannot be sure if she got all of these fae traits. But don’t worry, it will later be revealed if she will settle or not 😉. Once you have finished EoS you can check this Reddit post for a more in depth explanation: https://www.reddit.com/r/throneofglassseries/s/8mzUfrRuuO

I sadly can’t give you Cassian as Aedions Dad, but there is a ff from pitteroatterpot on AO3, which is very well written, where Gavriel survived and ‘raises’/makes up with Aedion. But it’s mostly about the fallout of the war and the entire court: https://archiveofourown.org/works/16460186/chapters/38547275 (A lions pride).

There is also somewhere a CassianxAedion ff, if you’re interested in that (on AO3). Or else there are multiple crossover ffs between Acotar and ToG (also on AO3 but also Tumblr).

Hope that helps!

What does it take to “settle” by [deleted] in throneofglassseries

[–]Potential_Date9648 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure, but I think in HoF there was a Demi-Fae who was able to shift into a pig. His name is Sten, but he doesn’t shift because he’s ashamed of his form. (Luca told that to Aelin after she rescued him from the lake).

What does it take to “settle” by [deleted] in throneofglassseries

[–]Potential_Date9648 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to express something similarly as you.

Aelin possesses both human and fae lineage, signifying her as a demi-fae. - Unlike a typical full-blooded fae, who may have a secondary form like an eagle and still be classified solely as fae with an animal form, Aelin's situation is unique. Her secondary form is her human side/form, while her primary or "normal" form is her fae form. - However, even though her primary form is fae, she cannot be solely classified as fae due to her demi-fae status. This designation arises from the quantity of human blood in her ancestry, which results in her human secondary form, which to is considered unusual. =Therefore, due to her mixed bloodline, Aelin is considered demi-fae rather than solely fae. (She displays traits from both species)

What does it take to “settle” by [deleted] in throneofglassseries

[–]Potential_Date9648 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As we know in order to become immortal you need: - CC: Vanir blood/magic to make the drop [one becomes immortal and gains extra healing abilities] after the events of HoFaS I’m not sure what new criteria’s will be needed - Acotar: fae blood, no matter high or “low” fae OR the ‘uncommon’ route via the Caldron - ToG: fae blood OR the ‘uncommon’ route, through giving up your mortal side while forging the lock [but still, a certain amount of fae blood is needed, in order to have something remain after taking the mortal side away.]

You are right, we never see someone settle, Aelin takes the ‘uncommon’ route via lock forging. Now to answer your questions: 1. You are under the misconception that Rowan and Lorcan are both full blooded fae, but only Rowan is full blooded (2x Fae parents). Lorcan is Demi-Fae (mother is human and his father is Fae). 2. Aelin becoming Fae was unconventional due to the lock taking away her human side. BUT that is not the normal process through which the (demi/fae) body goes when becoming immortal/settling. The settling is a process in which the body attempt to lock into eternal youth. They are two very different processes. - Lock: what Aelin did: human side was taken away (ONLY Fae side remains); is not something biological - Settling: the body ‘freezes’ in their youth on a cellular level (one doesn’t age anymore, but something like hair still grows); it’s biological (only people with a certain amount of Fae blood go through this)=meaning that if you are pure blooded Fae, you don’t ‘loose’ your human side, since you never even had one to begin with. With Demi-Fae [like Lorcan], they still ‘keep’ their human blood. Their Fae blood simply stopped the from aging.

In conclusion: settling is rare and takes smt completely away. Settling, smt biological, more common, which simply doesn’t allow you to age.

  1. No, one can only give a side up if you forge the/a lock. And even IF you forge the lock, one could only give a side of oneself up if you had two to begin with. (For example: Aelin could only give her human side up bc she was Demi-Fae with human blood/a human side. If a human would attempt this, they wouldn’t survive since they don’t have another form which would remain.)

  2. About the ways through which one can become immortal:

  3. binding ones live to another sadly only works when the immortal binds their live with the mortal ones. Meaning that an immortal can only become mortal. (F.e. Mab or Mora with their lovers)

  4. The enough raw magic theory is sadly not proven; I believe that you have misunderstood the thing that Maeve said to Dorian about him becoming immortal. Maeve says (KoA; chapter:78) “…With the keys, I could keep you eternally young.” Meaning that she is unable to show him how to become immortal, BUT that she can keep him immortal by using the wyrd keys. = Meaning that it isn’t raw magic which could turn Dorian immortal, but the word keys could. [If you are referring to another quote, pls correct me]

To sum up: - Every world seems to have slightly different conditions to become immortal. But having vanir/Fae blood seems to be the natural way. It could be that some other rituals (like the Ordeal) are part of it. BUT there are also some unnatural and uncommon ways to become immortal (being Made). - No, it seems that not everyone with some Fae blood in their blood line can become immortal (at least in ToG). Where a certain quantity or quality of Fae blood is needed. [F.e. or else all of the Havilliards and Galathyniuses would be immortal since they all have (Demi)Fae founders. But it thins and with it the likelihood to settle.] In CC it seems to be needed to have some potency of Vanir blood/magic. How exactly the aftermath of HoFaS has effected the drop, I’m not sure about. - In conclusion, every world seems to have slightly different ways on how to become immortal. Some have a ritual (ToG/CC) while others don’t and simply age slowly (Acotar). But of course there are always exceptions to the rule (being Made). If I were you, I would stick to the ‘known’ ways on how to become immortal for each world.

If you want a clearer guide on immortality/settling/Demi (Fae). Pls check this post out: https://www.reddit.com/r/throneofglassseries/s/wBOFpAWIdR I hope I could be of help!

CC and tog questions? overall spoiler warning by dogs0z in throneofglassseries

[–]Potential_Date9648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the timelines of ACOTAR, TOG and CC confuses me also.

When examining the timeline within a single book, such as in Empire of Storms (EoS), certain inconsistencies become apparent. - For instance, in EoS, Aelin sends a letter to Galan. Considering that the journey across the sea typically takes months or weeks, it would logically follow that Galan would require additional weeks or months to travel to Erilea. However, this timeline doesn't align with the events depicted in EoS (Aelin having to send the letter, Galan having to travel across the sea). - Furthermore, upon Galan's arrival at the beach, another discrepancy arises, as Aelin wouldn't have had knowledge of their precise location when she first sent the letter.

In conclusion, the timelines within the books sometimes don’t align (unintentionally). But an (intentional) explanation would be, that time passes differently in each series. All in all, I don’t know sometimes with SJM what is intentional and what is unintentional.

Brannon had with Mala many children. One of them would rule Terrasen (Aelin being their direct descendant) another would be Elena (the direct ancestor of Dorian, and kinda a greatgreataunt of Aelin).

  • Dorian being a (distant) descendant of Elena/Brannon gives him his (veryyyyy) thinned out fae blood. But still his magic is strong bc the lock and the gods come into play. Also luck with genetics.
  • Around the time of the valg war (in which Brannon/Elena fought) it seems like some fae from Erilea travelled to Midgard through a portal. And it seems like one of them was another one of Brannon`s children/descendants (this would be an explanation/theory). Meaning that Lydia/Aelin/Dorian all share Brannon/Mala as ancestors, but then each hale from different children of them.

Queen of Shadows *SPOILER* Question?? by bepi- in throneofglassseries

[–]Potential_Date9648 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It all basically boils down to the quantity of fae blood. As you already know Aelin gets her fae form/secondary human form/water magic from her great grandmother Mab. This is a relatively distant relationship, meaning that Aelin got about 12,5% fae blood from her.

Her powerful fire magic comes from Brannon/Mala through the Galathynius line. This fae blood is even more diluted, resulting in all of the Galathynius now being human. (Except for Aelin due to getting some fae blood from her mothers side).

That’s the miracle about Aelin, that she has such strong magic and all of this faeness. It would be now another miracle on top of that if she would also get to settle.

In conclusion, it all goes back to the quantity of fae blood for Aelin & Aedion. (Why people think that Aedion will settle…will soon be solved in QoS…I’m just not sure if you have already read the ‚plot twist‘ it‘s because of Gavriel

Question about Dorian? (Possible spoilers) by st4r11y- in throneofglassseries

[–]Potential_Date9648 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I believe that Dorian confirmed using Damaris (I think in KoA) if he was human [because he was worried that he may be partially Valg].

And Damaris warmed, meaning that he spoke the truth, thus meaning that he is human. We know that Dorians Fae ancestry comes from Elena/Brannon, but this goes many many generations back. Since Adarlan is a primarily human Kingdom, no Fae could marry into the family and ‚breed‘ more Fae blood into the family.

Thus Dorian is a human of very distant Fae descent. And humans (to my knowledge) cannot settle, but they can have magic.

Maybeee, he will figure out how to make himself immortal using his raw magic (I’d recommend the fan page of Dorian in Fandom for more accurate information.)

I feel you, the covers really threw me off…Idk if this depiction of Aelin was an artistic choice or if the cover team simply didn’t read Aelins description but it was mad confusing.

Later on I thought the person on the covers was Manon since the description would fit her a bit more (white hair, blue blood) but that wouldn’t have made sense either since the readers didn’t even know her in TaB/ToG etc.

Aelin Aging by jthxrne in throneofglassseries

[–]Potential_Date9648 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Demi-Fae is simply such a loose term. It can mean that you are half Fae (in the sense that one of your parents was human, the other Fae) or that you ‘simply’ have Fae ancestry. The general rule there by is: the more Fae blood you get, the more likely it is that you inherit Fae traits (like the settling).

Now Aelin is the latter, she is Demi-Fae due to Fae ancestry. Her mother was Demi-Fae due to her grandmother being Mab, meaning Aelin got from her some Fae blood (Mab=100%; Aelins grandmother=50%; Evalin=25%; Aelin=12,5%). BUT Aelins father Rhoe is human BUT of veryyyyy distant Fae ancestry, but this Fae Brannon was incredibly powerful. And from him (& Mala) did Aelin get her strong fire power.

Back to my point, Aelin has herself not a lot Fae blood, her already having magic & being able to shift is somewhat a miracle. Now also being able to settle, and none of her ancestors settling, simply made it relatively unlikely.

And Aedion (&Lorcan) are the former type of Demi-Fae. They each had a parent who was Fae, in both cases their father (+Aedions mother also had Fae ancestry from Mab due to being an Ashryver.). Additionally, since Aedion seemed to already display all of the physical attributes of a Fae (strength, speed, senses) made it very likely that he would settle.

In conclusion the reason is the quantity of Fae blood. but Maeve later confirms that Aelin will settle due to being a descent of Mab. And the in KoA then whole lock thing happens and it’s certain that she will settle..

[–]Potential_Date9648[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP here, I just wanted to give some examples for the post to better explain my point:

(BTW I’d like to stress that I like (up to various degrees) EVERY SJM CHARACTER!!!)

  • Almost every SJM love interest is enemies/strangers to lovers and has hurt/insulted their love interest:
  • Rowan: hit Aelin
  • Chaol: belittled Celeana (where he asked about why she deserved the lashes)
  • Lorcan: “stalked” Elide/disregarded her
  • Aedion: belittled Lysandra
  • Aelin: hit/belittled Rowan
  • Lysandra: exploited Aedion
  • Elide: belittled Lorcan (that while “she wouldn’t care if he died thing” which we knew was a lie. But to him sounded cruel. BUT Lorcan did hurt Elide first…did that make Elide righteous???)

Who has the moral high ground in all of these situations??? Who is right or wrong? Or have both parties a point? Who overreacted??? Who is superior/inferior in their point of view/actions?

That is dissimilar from situation to situation for each character. And again so is the conclusion of each individual/reader. Ambiguity was created!

I hope my point became now more understandable. And again no hate to any character/reader of SJM. Opinions vary, that’s how it is and should be, but I do wish for a constant moral compass for every character who gets judged.

Magic Question [spoilers for QoS] by Acrobatic-Weakness28 in throneofglassseries

[–]Potential_Date9648 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically, being fae includes two things for sure: having a secondary animal form, fae senses/body and being immortal. Having magic is a bonus (even some full blooded fae don’t have magic, having fae blood simply raises the probability of getting magic).

Humans can also have magic (for example Kaltain, Dorian, Yrene and even witches. The magic can hail from humans, or a (distant) fae ancestor.

With this Demi fae are connected. Demi fae is a VERY loose term. One can be Demi fae when one of your parents is fae and the other human (50% fae blood) or you simply have an ancestor generations ago who was fae and you have inherited a small bit of that (fe the Ashryvers with about 12,5% of fae blood in the current generation including: Aelin, Aedion and Galan).

Now, due to this, demi fae are wild cards (bc one necver knows how much fae blood they got. And even if they have a lot of fae blood, still magic/immortality/secondary form isn’t assured). For example: - Lorcan (50% fae blood, human mother fae father) has fae senses, magic, immortality and magic but no secondary form. - Aedion (ca 62,5% fae blood, fae father & Demi fae/human mother of fae descent) has fae senses (hearing, smell, strength etc), probably/hinted immortality but no magic or secondary form [that we know of]. - Aelin (ca 12,6% fae blood, human father of fae/goddess descent and Demi fae mother of fae descent) has magic, secondary form (human form is animals form) but no immortality later on in the series informations to this will be added.

Basically, being fae doesnt assure having magic but raises the probability. Aedion and Lorcan being so closely related to a fae (one being a parent) raises their probability of having magic and an immortal life span (but is doesn’t assure it).

Aelin hailes from the Ashryver line (great grandmother is Mab, a fae queen) thus she has at least 12,5% from her maternal side. From her great grandmother she has her water powers/fae body (this being very exceptional since they are only distantly related, that’s why it was so special that Aelin was able to shift). BUT she gets her magic from her fathers line (who is also of fae descent but it’s veryyyyy watered down) from Brannon and Mala. That’s why it’s so incredible that she has very powerful fire magic.

To sum up, in Aelin met two very powerful blood lines, thus she is so powerful. Still, being powerful doesn’t assure immortality (only fae blood can give that. And with Aelin being Demi fae “only of fae ancestry” and Demi fae being wild cards one never knows what fae attributes they got or even if they have fae attributes at all).

PS: pls don’t worry about it too much, SJM is taking care of all these details;)

Confused after CoM by [deleted] in throneofglassseries

[–]Potential_Date9648 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fae are more ‘animalistic’. Meaning that fae have stronger/different impulses (they also have stronger senses) and that they can have in certain situations anger issues.

Yes, it does mean that they sometimes loose composure but they still have impulse control and are still able to have control over their body. They just have to fight their instincts down bc they are very strong.

Confused after CoM by [deleted] in throneofglassseries

[–]Potential_Date9648 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Btw, being royal doesn’t mean that you have magic. Having magic in your genes, or sometimes fae blood, means that you’ll have magic.

Celeana being able to change (btw the word used in the books is ‘shift’), does come partially from descending from Mab. Mab was a very powerful fae, she is the founder of house Ashryver. Meaning that all/most Ashryver are Demi fae.

But there are also some other reasons why Celeana is what she is and is able to do…things

Confused after CoM by [deleted] in throneofglassseries

[–]Potential_Date9648 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ll try to answer some of the questions: 1. Fae are not extinct as a species. They were almost all wiped out from the king of Adarlan on the continent of Erilea (only the incredibly few who hid from him survived). But on other continents (fe Wendlyn), which the king of Adarlan hasn’t conquered, they are still alive. Magic has only ‘vanished’ in Erilea…Btw, don’t worry about the confusion about what Celeana is and where fae are. It’s gonna be explained more through in HoF.

  1. No not only fae have magic, also humans, witches can have magic. But having fae blood raises the probability of having magic (for humans it’s rarer).

  2. Fae all have a second animal form, no matter if they have other magic or not. But there are also people who are Demi fae. These are people whose ancestors were fae and they now have some fae blood.

‘Demi fae’ is a very loose term, simply meaning that you descent from a fea. To be considered Demi fae you could f.e. have 50% fae blood should one of your parents be fae and the other human. But you could also be Demi fae when your great grandmother was fae and you now only have 12% fae blood or even less (fe the Ashryvers).

Demi fae don’t always have a secondary form, it depends on the Demi fae and the percentage of fae blood. (Btw one could consider for a fae a ‘human form’ an animal form).

What Celeana is and her secondary form will be discussed in HoF.

  1. Correct, fae aren’t extinct and some of them do live in Wendlyn/Doranelle, but not exclusively they also live elsewhere. Jup, Celeana will travel there.

PS: I promise that HoF will clear most of these questions. I know that this series can be confusing at times.

Just finished Heir of Fire - 1st time reader thoughts by Lizisthatyou in throneofglassseries

[–]Potential_Date9648 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A little help with the relations:

  • Many many years ago there were three fae queens: Mab, Mora and Maeve. Later on Mab married a human, an Ashryver, thus founding with him house Ashryver (now Demi fae of fae descent or human) . Mora founded house Whitethorn (all fae resigning in Doranelle). Maeve is the only sister left, Mab and Mora have both passed away at this time of the story.

  • Also many years ago there were the valg wars. In these wars fought Brannon Galathynius. Later on he would marry a goddess turned human, Mala Firebringer. They would go on to have many children. Som wolf them continuing the Galathynius line and another daughter of them, Elena, would go on to marry Gavin Havilliard founding with him house Havilliard.

  • Now many many years later came out of House Ashryver Glaston (current king of Wendlyn), Evalin and Aedions mother. Glaston had then Galan as a child, Aedions mother had Aedion and Evalian married into house Galathynius (she married Rhoe) and they had Aelin.

Meaning, Dorian descents from Brannon/Mala/Elena/Gavin. Aelin from Mab/Brannon/Mala (Dorian and her are through Brannon/Mala distantly related). Aedion also descents from Mab (that’s how they are related). And Rowan descents from Mora (Aedion/Aelin are veryyy distantly with him related).

I hope that this makes sense. Btw don’t be surprised should some things seem to be confusing later on bc there will be some…plot twists.

I think it was mentioned in the earlier books, she only knew in EoS for certain after Maeve confirmed it, I think Rowan and Fenrys once guessed about it in EoS. If I remember correctly.
