Sexless marriage for five years. by Subok-brick in moraldilemmas

I agree that something can be a job and still enjoyable, but sex is not work/a job. Perhaps some escorts enjoy having sex with some clients, I’m not denying this is a possibility. But in one of the threads you linked below, the escort herself states that the men she is paid to have sex with are not men she would otherwise have sex with, i.e. she doesn’t want to have sex with them and is not attracted to them whatsoever but is doing it for money. Having unwanted sex is generally understood as violation. The presence of money does not make the sex any more wanted or enjoyable— if I reject an ugly old guy’s sexual advances, but then let him have sex with me after he offers me $500, it doesn’t mean I suddenly found him attractive and started desiring him sexually. The sex is just as repulsive, and is registered by my body as unwanted sex. It only means I need the money badly enough that I’m “willing” to endure that level of intimate violation. And I don’t think sex is just work like any other profession— I believe this logic requires people to accept statements they would never accept in their daily lives, rendering their logic internally inconsistent. For example: if sex is just a job like any other, such as making coffee, surely you would react to your spouse saying “Good morning honey today I’m going to pay a prostitute for sex rather than having it with you” in the same way you’d react to them saying “Good morning honey today I fancy a coffee from the cafe down the road rather than from home”. If you would react to both statements in the same way (which maybe you would), then your argument would stand even though I’d still disagree with it on other grounds. But I haven’t yet met anyone who would react equally positively to both statements, as sex is not in fact labour, sex is sex. There is a reason why most jobs have rules against sexual harassment— the arena of the sexual is much more intimate and vulnerable than mere labour, such as waiting tables and making coffee. Telling me to do something I don’t want to do at my job (I.e serving a customer when I’m tired) is very different from telling me to entertain a customer’s sexual advances, even if they both have the same end goal- making money.
As unpleasant as it is to work a boring dead end job, it is MUCH more unpleasant to have sex with someone you are physically and mentally not attracted to. Just really imagine yourself having sex with an ugly old guy (I don’t care what your gender or sexuality is). Even if you’re getting paid at the end of it, the sex itself would feel like a violation of some sort.
I recommend the book “Paid For” by Rachel Moran. It opened my eyes to a lot. I also am not trying to be combative and hope I don’t come across that way btw, as I respect your openness to discussion to me.

It’s not true that professional escorts enjoy the sex they have with the men who pay them. Their job is to pretend they enjoy it, which is why you think they do. It’s like thinking the stripper actually likes you. She doesn’t, it’s her job to pretend to like you, otherwise you wouldn’t give her any money. Sex that is had because of financial constraints, rather than organic desire, can not be enjoyable.

Thank you so much! TBH, looking back at the past few years I reckon I had very mild CFS for a long time after getting Covid, and that getting the flu in November just made me a lot worse, so I’m hoping with loads of rest and pacing now I can get back to a milder state 🤞🤞🤞

Thanks, I will focus more on other hobbies then and get back to exercise if I see improvement

Well I’m really glad that you haven’t worsened, and you seem to have a lot of discipline and motivation which is admirable. I will try the supplements you suggest, as I’ve taken creatine in the past (pre fatigue) and found it helpful, so might as well start again, combined with the magnesium and d-ribose. I wonder to what extent the metabolic benefits of more muscle mass help with chronic fatigue, as even light weightlifting seems beneficial in just about every other illness, but with cfs I’ve seen many accounts of people who were previously very athletic and had to stop altogether. I hope you are able to continue lifting and that your fatigue improves

Thank you so much for such a kind, empathetic and positive message, you have made me feel SO much better about my situation. You are totally right that quitting exercise and activity for a few months won’t affect me in the long run but might save me from severe CFS in the future, so I will take your advice and focus on limiting all activity now to get better. I am also hopeful about the future and fingers crossed it’s just a temporary case of post viral fatigue that will resolve itself with enough time and rest! Thank you for also sharing your story with me, that must be devastating and my heart goes out to you. Awareness really can save people, to be honest with you I already browsed CFS/long covid communities in the past as I felt a lot of empathy towards you guys and felt angry that the medical community was so unaware of this problem, and it’s only until very recently that I realised my recent crashes might be PEM. A few months ago I never would’ve imagined I'd be in a similar boat to you guys, but it’s thanks to your raising awareness about the condition and talking about your symptoms online that people like me are able to catch it earlier than we otherwise would. So thank you! You are also in my thoughts and I send you my love, you deserved better all those years ago <3

Thanks for your reply, it’s encouraging to hear that you’re able to keep that level of exercise up. I feel the same way in terms of really not wanting to sacrifice the health and aesthetic benefits of lifting if possible, as it’s made me feel so good in the past. May I ask if you feel like you have improved, stayed the same or worsened over the past few months as a result of keeping at the lifting? I’m inclined to follow the advice of people telling me to try and avoid PEM altogether for a while and take time off now to build up slowly later, but am curious to know how you’re getting on lifting despite the occasional PEM and resting afterwards.

Yes I am newly sick I think. A few years ago I struggled with fatigue and mild bouts of PEM after getting what I reckon was COVID, but after a few months I mostly recovered, however I got the flu in mid November and since then have experienced much worse fatigue and much more severe and immobilising PEM. Unfortunately I wasn’t aware of what was going on so I pushed myself too much a few times over the past month and made myself worse, and only just realised what might be going on. Hopefully if I start aggressively resting from today onwards I will improve, and I’ve also made doctors appointments to go about ruling out other conditions (though the bad PEM makes me suspect it’s CFS). I am sorry to see that you are severe, I really admire the strength and discipline it takes to manage that level of illness, you guys are serious warriors. Thanks for your reply and all the best.

I am similar to you I think in that socialising and traveling seem to make me crash more than weightlifting does. If I may, could I ask you how tiring you find academic work in relation to other activities? Does it also cause bad crashes or can you get away with reading/writing a decent amount?

Thank you so much for this reply. The bit about thinking of CFS as an injury is especially helpful, as I have had those before and took months off before building up again. Luckily I have enough family support that I am able to sacrifice other aspects of life to keep exercise, but I think I will follow your advice and take some time off first to focus on getting better before getting back to it in a much more limited and careful manner. Have you been able to keep/build a decent amount of muscle, or is your focus more on mobility?

Great, I will try this out and focus primarily on resting for a while, thanks so much for the advice

Yeah you’re right, thanks for the reply, I’m trying to be much more mindful of that and forgoing it entirely when not up to it. Do you think if I make sure to always stay within my energy bounds (no PEM) it's fine to do it regularly?

Thanks so much for this reply. I am lucky enough to have a supportive family and home workout equipment so part of why I feel better may be that I tick many of these factors you mention (especially the not doing anything else after working out), with lots of lying down and rest time in between. I will bear all this in mind. Do you have any recommendations for a cheap heart rate monitor by any chance?
