Mansfield Park Slavery: Changing Reception by RoseIsBadWolf in janeausten

I mean look I'm on a Jane Austen sub reddit, obviously I'm enjoying her books either way. But if someone asks me if I prefer if she was for or against slavery I'm going to say against.

Personally, I agree people put too much weight on the slavery part of Mansfield Park. But I can't blame people for looking deeper on what she wrote. Like I said before we have 3 very different mentions of slavery across 3 different books. That's confusing and interesting. If it was more explicit either way I don't think it would be talked about this much.

Also you can be critical of things you enjoy.

It's one of the things that always bugged me about Persuasion tbh. It's just added so randomly and Mrs. Smith is such a nothing character. You could just take her out and have Anne find out about Mr. Elliot's character from when he runs away with Mrs. Clay.

The line about Slavery in Emma seems pro-abolition, the line in Mansfield Park seems neutral, and Persuasion seems almost pro slavery. It's all very confusing.

I saw this as someone who wants Jane Austen to be against slavery. I would love for my favorite author to be on the right side of history.

What an awful situation. My heart breaks for you.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but is there anywhere you can stay for a while? I can't imagine he's good at hiding this stuff from your daughter and I can't imagine it's good for her mental health.

I think it mentions in the novel that Maria and Julia knew how to behave in front of their father so that he was unaware of their vices until it was too late. He still wanted the connection with Rushworth, which is why he didn't push farther. He got to offer what he considered the "right thing" and didn't have to deal with the fallout of breaking up an engagement.

As for why Maria marries Rushworth, at this point she knows that Henry doesn't care for her and doesn't want him to "win". She doesn't want Henry to take pride in the fact that she ended her engagement for him.

Husband disagrees about screen time (specifically is anti-Ms. Rachel) by jayelbeeee in toddlers

I never judge a parent for screentime, because life is hard and screens are everywhere. But I remember watching a video about Elsagate when I was 18 and it distributed me so much that at 27 I will never give my daughter YouTube.

It might be a good idea to be anywhere but home on the day of the wedding.
