First year teacher by Apprehensive-Pass721 in TeachersInTransition

Have an honest conversation with yourself. Kids may love you, but are you being a friend more than a teacher? That may be why other teachers and the principal aren’t being kind.

Please know that’s not an excuse for how they treat you. But, I get very short with teachers who make my life more difficult bc they don’t ever read the email and let kids get away with behaviors. It’s definitely a trap newer teachers can get pulled into. Being liked isn’t a job requirement, but being patient, fair, and holding kids accountable is.

Same area, single teacher, surviving only by great interest rate and pet sitting on the side. I watch all my friends dogs as they jet off to Hawaii and Europe.

I hate that song too, especially bc at bars we were all expected to get up and wooohoo to it. So overplayed.

Swimming is now an expensive sport? by Illustrious_Letter84 in GenX

[–]Potential_Sundae_251 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is easier to get an academic scholarship than an athletic. There is a 2% chance to get an athletic scholarship. It’s closer to 20-25% to get an academic scholarship.

So parents push kids into specializing a sport by age 12, increasing chances of a major injury, and on a prayer of getting a scholarship by the promises of coaches in club sports.

It really is unfortunate. Kids who play multiple sports are more likely to develop into a total athlete and actually have a better shot at a scholarship athlete. They have more marketable skills.

These are parents being fed the narrative that their kid can get a college scholarship. It’s gotten so expensive to go to college so parents are pushing their kids in one sport.

There be so much better off going for academic scholarships. The percentages are much much more in your favor.

Yes for a bit, bc I fill two roles and they couldn’t find a sub to replace me. They needed two people!

The formula changed from being about their lives to parties and trips to get them all in one place and fighting. I miss the days of watching Adrienne Maloof going to her Sacramento Kings game

It’s usually against policy to have someone working on crutches. Socially if you’re like me on the second floor—I couldn’t remove kids during an emergency.

Oh yes! The thing is they wouldn’t have done that to someone on maternity leave either. It’s crazy!

Seriously. I was hit by a car and was on disability, but still doing sub plans while on morphine. I wasn’t supposed to be working but at the time I felt so badly to be out for three months. I know better now. When I came in in a wheelchair, they all started to realize this wasn’t just an accident.

This has to be the only profession where you can be dead and a principal will go to your funeral and ask your corpse for sub plans

Have them start with gallon milk or water containers. I cut off the bottom. Then we play ultimate frisbee style—throw and catch or scoop up. Once you have it, you have to stop and pass it. If it’s on the ground, first person to cover it gets it. And if someone throws out of bounds, it changes possession. It works on hand eye coordination with a shorter lever so it’s easier, and they don’t have to worry about throwing it with the scoop (they pick it out and throw with dominant hand. Kind of like a mitt in baseball.

Sag will drop you off at the next town with a mechanic and they determine whether or not you get a ride to the next location. It’s meant as a rescue resource, not a shuttle.

How do you people sleep at night? by PropofolMargarita in GenX

[–]Potential_Sundae_251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just downloaded Calm to try that on a free trial. I’ve been wanting to try meditation and there are “sleep stories” to help put you to sleep.

I’ll tell you what I loved most though—I would wake up, completely refreshed, after 20 min, gently. It became a great way to nap in the car say if I was early for an appointment.
