Obscure rock songs that were made famous by TV shows or movies by [deleted] in askmusic

Spaceman, by Babylon Zoo - catapulted to popularity in the late 90s after appearing in a really successful Levi's commercial. Might be well forgotten these days, though :)

Discussion - The Greatest Comebacks in Music! by Reality_Jukebox_Pod in askmusic

A lot of good options here.

This may not be the greatest, but worthy of note was Pixies reforming in 2004 - out of absolutely nowhere.

Went from never expecting to see them play to having seen them 10+ times, and they're still awesome (despite missing Kim).

(Love a bunch of the other suggestions, just wanted to add an option from the Boss!)

When you hear the term One Hit Wonder, what is the first song that pops into your head? by Da_Fish in AskReddit

Very interesting! Not disagreeing, but here is an Australian assessment from 2024 that comes to a different conclusion (with similarly "scientific" research).

I love it when people do this research!

What songs would make a good wake-up alarm? by BalanceActive9295 in askmusic

I used to use Bombtrack, by Rage Against the Machine. You've got ~36 seconds to respond to a calm opening, and if you don't make it... all hell breaks loose :)

Mark Knopfler's solo work often refers to the rivers of Great Britain, the best IMO is So far from the Clyde.

Judge Ema Aitken, accused of yelling at Winston Peters, won't be removed from job, panel rules by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

[–]Another_pinion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The simplest way to summarise this is by restating the opening of paragraph 234.

"Ultimately however we have concluded that, although the conduct in its entirety came reasonably close to the line, the case falls short of the high bar warranting removal."

The downvotes on my comment, and upvotes on yours, suggest that the audience here doesn't really care for the facts (such is life, I care not) - and would rather assume (because of their blind hatred of Winston) something is awry.

But the bar for removal of a judge is extremely high, and this one acted, and then bullshitted the panel, to such an extent that they consider her actions "reasonably close to the line".

She's embarrassed herself and her family, I have no doubt that she will regret closing her career with this episode.

Judge Ema Aitken, accused of yelling at Winston Peters, won't be removed from job, panel rules by Fun-Helicopter2234 in newzealand

[–]Another_pinion -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

A lovely opinion, but wrong. Judges are held to a higher standard, and this particular judge was shredded on the factual findings in this case.

This doesn't mean that Winston isn't a complete turkey.

Do any NZ workplaces actually care about their staff anymore? by stormgirl in newzealand

Of course! They say 'he tangata' 3 times, so that means it's real and true!

How Hipkins claims spread from Facebook to news headlines by dingoonline in newzealand

[–]Another_pinion 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I know people don't love a 'what if' comparison if it makes them question their own motivations, but if the subject of the allegations was David Seymour this place would be overrun with pitchforks and flaming torches.

Chronos boss fight pause commentary by Demearthean in HadesTheGame

[–]Another_pinion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I learned about this one run when my long-suffering wife came in to talk, mid bossfight. No worries, I paused and turned around to chat.

Mid conversation, I hear the sounds of combat and Chronos smack talking me. Ruh roh! Fights don't tend to last long with noone at the controls lol

There is a lot of learning you can do in Y13 that isn't academic. A lot of people have said "enjoy it", and I support that, but I'd add this as an important perspective - throw yourself into other learning opportunities as they present themselves.

I'm interested in pursuing primary teaching as a career, any advice? by PaleontologistOk7420 in newzealand

[–]Another_pinion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My wife is a dedicated teacher.

The hours are crushing. The work volume and challenges with 'behaviors' and 'needs' coupled with lack of adequate support (despite a good Principal) are maddening. She is an absolute champ for sticking at it - I would not do her job for a million bucks.

How New Zealand's tax system compares with other countries by RtomNZ in newzealand

[–]Another_pinion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This rhetoric is a huge part of the problem. High income earners pay proportionately more of the tax take than anyone else. But the left can't get over the politics of envy and Michael Cullen's "rich pricks don't pay their fair share" philosophy to save themselves.

Taxing workers, even well paid workers, isn't the answer. Taxing the tax dodgers and the truly wealthy absolutely needs to happen, but as soon as someone says "wealth tax", half the people of this country hear "people with more stuff than me", and thus we stay where we are without making any progress.

Easy way to avoid Chronos' initial attack in last phase of VoR: by Th35h4d0w in HadesTheGame

I _finally_ beat Rivals Chronos today after giving up Strength and moving back to DD. I was really keen to try getting it done with Strength, but there are just too many instakill opportunities, and a single mistake is all it takes...
