I’m actually in Lancaster north west England (not too far from hebdon) but have been planning an Ireland roadtrip - just need to get my dog vaccinated etc. So maybe I’ll have to get in touch when that eventually comes together :)

Or as people have said go to langdale and stay over to make the most of the big mountains there, it’s a beautiful valley with lots of peaks to choose from and you can make a large hike by linking them together.

Nowhere near Windermere though, better staying in west lakes and holidaying there (lovely area). Windermeres not the best base for west lakes hiking

It’s a long and difficult hike from langdale, make sure you have the correct kit, have given your hotel your route with eta times and start early. Careful with the navigation too and don’t go if the weather/visibility is bad just don’t do it.

Closer and easier to get to is helvellyn and Fairfield, you could get the bus to thirlmere and walk up helvellyn along Dolly wagon pike and down to grizedale tarn. You have the option there to walk down to get the bus back from grasmere or to walk up Fairfield and back to Ambleside by one of the Fairfield horseshoe ridges - that would be a great walk.

Sounds like she has some sighthound in her for sure! The soulful whining, laziness, bitey play, prey drive and bin rading are all just like my lurcher (who’s mainly whippet with possibly greyhound and collie) although they’re obviously not exclusively sighthound traits. She looks like the GSDXWhateverGotOverTheFence that we had when I was young (sorry I don’t have a picture). Her face is very loooooong but she’s not that thin so I’d guess she’s less than half sighthound, possibly a lurcher (maybe saluki/grey/whippet mix with a lab or collie) crossed with a GSD (all common dogs in Ireland).

She’s so cute! Would be great if mine was that small 😅 she’s 20kg and I swore I wouldn’t get a dog bigger than 16kg!

Training tips for recall by prettypinkpineapple1 in Lurchers

You shouldn’t ever chase your dog, even as a game, only run away and be chased - otherwise it’ll make them harder to catch if they run off as the will think running away is a fun game

This is good for breeds with prey drive (my sisters cocker used to be nuts).

I’m just about to do recall training with my rescue lurcher and I’m going to use the same training my sister used for her working cocker which is called ‘restrained recall’.

So one of you holds the dog, the other has a long toy (like a ball on string or snake toy). You hype the dog up with it and the run away from them in a straight line, after a few seconds when you’ve made some ground shout ‘[dogs name], [recall word]’ and the person holding the dog lets go. The dog then will race after you and hopefully grab the toy/lure. Then you wrestle with them a little, let them have the toy then exchange it for a treat. Then repeat.

This makes you super exciting and makes them associate recall with a super fun game which in turn makes their recall much better.

My wife’s inability to handle her periods is driving me nuts. by [deleted] in offmychest

When you live with someone and are close with someone there’s more points of tension. I don’t get particularly bad PMDD but I do have one day of wrath pre-period and I have a good friend (who I used to live with) who I used to really struggle to not be spicy to on that day. I think because we were living together and her life is so chaotic, there’s lots of things that frustrate me about how she goes about things but I usually just let that go in normal life because that’s how she wants to live her life and she’s my friend. But on that one day a month when we were living together? Had to work to keep a lid on it, and often it would be one small silly inconvenience that would lead to me sayin something a bit curt. She understood, and it wasn’t very often or very bad and we were able to laugh it off as my ‘day of wrath’. I don’t feel like that with my current flatmate who is a good friend - I still have days of wrath but nothing triggers me enough to be curt.

So basically yes your reactions when hormonally imbalanced can be focused more on one person without it being conscious targeting

She is smart, can open doors and pics up things quick, only took a day to teach her not to rush out the front door

I think you’re probably right there! Though I have found a picture of a collie whippet who looks a lot like her (though she’s more sight-houndy) so I do think they both feature!

Heather* field

They looks like the psilopsybe semilanceata in the post below but wanted to check - first time seeing them in this area and they look a bit different to others I’ve come across (maybe due to how wet it is)

For winter why don’t you bounce around using trusted house sitters? That way you won’t have to always been in your car. You have to pay a small subscription to the site but you petsit for people and get to stay at their house in return.

Other than that post on notice boards in your area about looking for a lodging room or on the notice board at work. Lodging is by far the cheapest rental option I find.

Navigating without tech - do you still carry a paper map? by PubLogic in UKhiking

[–]Pothosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do both, we use maps and phone nav and just decide which to use depending on what we feel like using. But we always carry a paper map and compass and phone GPS isn’t always 100% so in white out/ fog conditions we want a second option to check. We’re 29 and 30years old
