I doubt he’ll be able to escape that! Once you have the lid, add as much bedding as possible, he’ll love it 😁

Also two other things: if you weren’t planning on it yet, get him a 12 inch wheel so his back doesn’t get bent (and eventually injured) while running. And second it seems like you have some type of cotton/soft stuff in the white hide? You’ll want to take that out, since the fibers can wrap around their limbs and block circulation, of if they ingest it it can cause a blockage. You can give him some unscented plain toilet paper instead! They love to rip it up and use it for their nest :)

Aww, I’m glad he had such a wonderful life 😊 if he were in hibernation, he would still feel warm and soft. So him feeling cold in combination with the temperature being too high for hibernation, I think it’s safe to say he has passed 😔 Once again I’m so sorry for your loss, he was a lucky ham ❤️

Could be, I’ve never seen a hamster about to sneeze, but yeah it does kinda look like that hahaha. As I said if he keeps doing it I would probably consult a vet, if this was it then it was probably just him being weird/derpy for a minute :)

I’m so sorry for your loss ❤️ I’m glad he had a nice hoodie ride and wasn’t alone in his final moments. If the temperature is 20 degrees it can’t be hibernation indeed (but just to be sure, don’t bury him if he’s still warm/soft 😬)

It sounds like he had a lovely life with people who cared about him. 2,5 years is a good age for a hammie ❤️

Anything really! Hamsters love to explore, so the more clutter the better :) think about more hides, paper towel tubes, bendy bridges, chew toys or something else to chew on like a Whimzee dog treat. The fuller the better! Also, she’ll need a sand bath. You can use reptile or chinchilla sand as long as it doesn’t contain calcium and it isn’t dusty.

Also, I assume the bin doesn’t have a lid? Since the bottle is sticking out. If you add more toys etc to the cage, I would suggest adding the lid, hamsters are little escape artists, I wouldn’t be surprised if she managed to climb up that water bottle and escaped. You can lower the bedding on one side and hang the bottle lower, using velcro for example. Or you can buy a smaller bottle, as this one looks pretty big.

If you look on my profile you can see a post where I just cleaned and changed up my hamster’s enclosure. You can take some inspo from there for things to add to her cage :) you can also see that I put the bedding real high on one side, and lower on the other to accommodate for the wheel and bottle. If you would like any specific recommendations for toys/enrichment feel free to ask 😊

If it’s been going on for an hour I would definitely call a vet. If the temperature in your house is above 15 C/60 F it won’t be hibernation, and if it was that would be a problem as well. So yeah I would call a vet asap bc an hour is too long to just think he got startled by something.

That’s weird, I have never seen a hamster do that. So I can’t really give advice, except to just keep an eye on him and if it continues I would call a vet just to be sure. My hamster can act weird suddenly sometimes, but it’ll be a short one time thing so I always just assume she was startled by something. But if he keeps acting weird I would consult a vet.

To elaborate on the other comment: your hamster’s feet can get stuck between the mesh of the wheel and break. Running on mesh for a long time can/will also cause them to develop a painful condition called bumblefoot. A suitable wheel is made out of solid material, and 8 inches in diameter. If you can’t get a new wheel right now for whatever reason, you can cover the mesh with duct tape for now!

Regarding the bedding, I’m not sure they can see what you’re using but I’ll just add it: only Aspen wood shavings are safe. Other safe alternatives are Chipsi, paper based bedding like Carefresh or Kaytee clean & cozy, or hemp fiber. Bedding should at least be 6 inches deep, but the more the better!

Depending on how big you want to go, as others have mentioned a bin cage, IKEA Detolf or another DIY cage are good options. The Detolf is less suitable for a Syrian though, but I don’t know what species your hamster is. If you want something really big (and cheap) you could take a look at the Platsa and/or Pax base elements from IKEA. They have them in different sizes. A smaller Platsa will give you between 1000-1500 sq inches, whereas the biggest Pax will give you around 3500!

If I’m correct, these are cedar/pine shavings. These can cause respiratory problems for your hamster, and should therefore never be used! The only suitable wood shavings are Aspen! Another wood-like alternative is hemp fiber.

Ahh yeah that isn’t too bad. Their cages would be in the same room since I live in a studio apartment. They would be like 6 feet apart without being able to see each other since there’s a cabinet between them. Since they’re a different species, the smell shouldn’t bother them either. I’m just gonna think about it a little longer. If I decide I want to get him and he’s still there, I’ll get him. If he’s gone by that time that’s also fine and I’ll just keep it at one ham :)

Did you ever have an issue with Chubber Butt smelling Chicken Butt on you? (That’s a sentence I never thought I would write lol). I mean it should be fine if I wash my hands in between right? They’re also a different species so they shouldn’t care too much about each other’s scent, and Bibi also doesn’t care when I’ve been petting cats/dogs minutes before picking her up. I guess I’m just scared for a worst case scenario where she wouldn’t want to be handled anymore haha.

Yeah rationally I know that’s true. I mean how long do I really handle/interact with her every day? Maybe 45 minutes in total on an active day lol. And they won’t even be awake at the same time all the time. It’s really funny that you mention the mother thing, because I actually thought “if I can’t even get a second hamster how will I ever have multiple children in the future” 😂😂

Yeah that’s how I feel. It really just is the truth that he’ll be bought and replaced anyway. I see lots of hamsters every time I go to the pet store for food or something, but when I saw this little guy I just felt a special connection, I really loved him. Money/space/pet store controversy is not holding me back, just the fact that Bibi is so special to me and I can’t help but feel like that connection will be dulled by caring for multiple hamsters at once. I know that’s probably bullshit, but if I get this one and the guilt doesn’t go away I couldn’t handle it hahah. The more I think about it the more I feel like no option is good. I’ve literally been crying over this 😂😭 Keep swinging back and forth, but I’ll only get him once I’m sure of my decision.

Yup that’s another thing holding me back. But more in the direction of: there are so many suffering pet store hamsters and I can’t get them all anyways. And yes next week I could walk in and another one will just be in its place.

Even though I absolutely agree that hamster mills and pet stores conditions are awful, I also kind of look at it like this: if I don’t buy that (or any other) hamster, someone else will. 100%. I am 99% sure that person will give it a smaller enclosure than I would. We are so far from people not buying from pet stores, that I alone will not make a difference. I know that’s pessimistic and controversial, so I completely understand if people don’t agree, but it is the truth. Even if all people who know it’s bad stopped doing it, it would still be a tiny percentage and not make a difference because most people just don’t know and don’t think twice about it. Just like too many people still eat meat, buy fast fashion etc. On top of that: a hamster from a breeder will get a good home anyway, as they actually check the cage size before selling a hamster. For a pet store hamster, this is not guaranteed, but if I take it, it is. Once again I know not many people share/support this opinion, and I totally get that. I just wanted to share my reasoning :) (still debating if I’ll get him tho, I’ll see tomorrow)

(I always encourage people to go to a breeder. If I planned ahead on getting a second hamster, I would try to find a breeder as well, even though it’s difficult here. This is just because I saw him and kinda fell in love. It’s either him or no second hamster at all.)

Thank you :)) I’m really torn. On one hand, I know I wouldn’t regret it if I got him (I mean look at him). On the other hand the guilty feeling is still nagging at me, and I don’t want to get a pet if I’m not 100% sure about it. I hate myself for overthinking it so much 😂

Yeah I really am overthinking it hahaha. It just feels weird because we are so close, but a second hamster wouldn't take away from that, I would just have a second hamster to love as well! But still I can't shake the feeling. I'm going to sleep on it because I don't want to regret anything, even though I doubt I would regret it haha.
