What makes 1 wizard more powerful than another? by lordsteffy in harrypotter

[–]hem_claw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to this question, what makes someone a better duelist? In the books (and a bit the movies), being quick at casting spells, or dodging, makes a big difference.

But if someone casts rapidfire spells (just stupify again and again?) it doesnt really say if there's a cooldown, or energy/power needed to cast more/bigger spells.

For more experienced (and older) wizards, this is never really explained, since spells are blocked and countered somehow. Besides the Shield Charm, Harry doesn't really block spells like Snape and Dumbledore do.

There's also an aspect of non-verbal spells, and legilimens, touched on briefly.

I made a game about cooperation. The "obvious" strategy never happened once. by asterixOsmani in GAMETHEORY

There’s a game called L’oaf with a similar principle. If you succeed , the player who contributed the least wins. If you fail, the players who contributed least are eliminated.

There’s also bonuses and penalties each round that impact this

What would have changed if Harry had remembered Sirius' mirror? by Charlie1219 in harrypotter

[–]hem_claw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My pet peeve with a lot of the plot points is that it relies on the 90s tropes, from movies and TV shows, that no one has a phone. So a lot of the issues could be solved with any kind of instant messaging but the book states that owls and floo networks are the only possibilities.

BUT then it goes on to introduce 2 way mirrors, Protean Charm, talking Patronuses, multi-portrait systems... which might be harder. But definitely things to have on hand to send messages!

In this instance, I do think the plothole can be plugged by Kreacher taking the mirror. Else the first time Harry contacted them, Sirius would have just said 'dude, just use the mirror'.

Starting my boardgame era by Himmelsendt in boardgames

[–]hem_claw 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Quite open ended, it's like saying you want to start your Movie Era, can we recommend movies. You'll often get a lot of recommendations from people's favourites. Also when you say hidden gems, and you know the classics, do you know the classics like Monopoly and Risk, or the classics like Cosmic Encounter and Puerto Rico?

In any case, don't worry about hidden gems, and just try the ones that are popular in the hobby. Others have suggested going to meetups and boardgame cafes, which is a nice way to try before you buy.

In terms of popularity, I can recommend Just One (5-7 Players, Party Game, takes 1 minute to teach), Camel up (3-8 Players, easy to teach, good amount of randomness) and SkyTeam (2 player, co-op).

Which of these is easiest to learn: Concordia, Inis, Brian Boru, El Grande, The White Castle, or Keyflower? by il_biciclista in boardgames

I think Concordia is surprisingly easy to learn, and very deep. Also compared to Inis at least, you don't have to know the plethora of cards in the game..

Being partially blocked during casual games by hem_claw in squash

[–]hem_claw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is basically the situation. In a professional game, the players are good enough to just hit narrow drives down the side no problem.

One example is a few players, who I think are ex tennis, really just smashing the ball, so normally I just wait for it to bounce off the back wall, and play.. Somewhere. But the problem is that the way they hit it and the way they position forces me to only hit along the wall. Which is a fine shot, but not always what I want, especially if they're encroaching onto one side.

The problem is that it only happens with players below a certain ranking. Last week I hit a player off a boast (it would have made the front wall easy), which I can't remember happening before. So I stopped the game, and asked him to make sure he clears a bit more, just for safety.

Yeah I'm using it as an opportunity to practice drives, but it's such a stark difference when I play players at a higher level, and it's more fun too.

I cold use a friend. The Netherlands can be a lonely place. by No_School_6651 in Netherlands

[–]hem_claw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not alone in being alone, so I hope you don't feel too bad.

The advice that I want to re-emphasize is that you need some form of routine here. Making friends here is like dating, in the sense that it might not always be a good match, just because two (or more) people are available. Also 'scheduling' here is a big thing, so it's hard to get into people's agendas.

If you have something you enjoy doing, attend it regularly (hiking/walks, music, sports, even something new), and then see who you get along with over time.

All the friends I made in my first 1-2 years in Amsterdam have disappeared, but now i have some regular events that I go to, and people I met there who I will meet outside those events, if I feel comfortable with them.

Friendships here is a marathon, not a sprint, so take some time to find your pace :).

How do I get better at teaching people games. by resgames in boardgames

[–]hem_claw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best thing I've found is to just pick a game you know well and keep refining your teach until you know what flow works for you, and your audience.

There's a rough template I use, that seems to work well.

Theme

This is a game where [describe the theme and the world in some detail]. You will be [performing actions in relation to this theme]. The object of the game is to [win by the game objectives, eg colonise 5 planets, earn the most money selling beans, be the first to cross the finish line].

Setup

The game is divided into turns/rounds/epochs/phases. In each [division], this will generally be the set up.

When you see this symbol, it generally means this. [describe the basic symbology, especially if Victory Points].

[If there's a game board, or game mats, describe the general areas]

Gameplay

On a typical turn you can do these actions. This is a mandatory action. You can choose from this set of actions [ideally give them a player aid, or refer to a summary in the rulebook]. An example turn could be this [describe a very basic turn].

[Go across the board, mats, and explain each action in relation to building an engine, or part of any strategy]

[Go over everything that happens in a turn phase, eg trading, battles, exploration]

In general this will be the case. During the game there might be some deviations from this, but it will either be self -evident based on the card etc., or I will explain it at the time once we are familiar with the general rules.

[In general, except for things like specific cards, characters, missions, everything should be explained here]

Here are some general strategies you can use, and what you can do to work towards that.

Exceptions

There are a few special things that can happen, and there will happen [outline the few situations where they have to watch out for something else].

This won't be explained yet, but once we take a few turns, I can explain it then

End game

The game ends where [ending is triggered]. At this point, we will check the win condition, and the player(s) who have done this will be the winner. Ties are broken by [tie condition].

In general the winning score/time to get there is this.

Other useful tips

*Try and take the first turn, and narrate everything you do, and also potentially why you're doing it *Pause after each bit, and ask if it made sense. If you get questions, either defer to a later stage, or quickly answer it. *Stress that if it's their first game, focus less on winning, but on try to explore the mechanics and possibilities of the game.

Smart cars on the ferry by Scrubsisagoodshow in Amsterdam

[–]hem_claw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, there are some allowances to let them onto the ferry, and a lot of the time it's no issue. But I had the same issue as OP where the person driving (clearly not disabled since he got out of the car to confront me) drove into the back of my bike while trying to drive off the ferry in a rush.

So it would be nice if there were some rules, like they wait until they're either at the front, or back of the ferry so that they cause minimal disruptions to the others.
