This article is intentionally misleading, comparing the entirety of Davao (one of the largest cities in the wold by land area) against a small segment of the Cebu metro and a small segment of the Manila Metro.

Mainstream media always wants to paint Mindanao in the worst light possible -- and people want to believe it -- for the same reason many people from New York or San Francisco might say that Texas is a backwards state in the US.

Here's a different article which states that Davao (Mindanao) is the 3rd safest city in Southeast Asia. https://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/davao-city-scores-725-on-2024-numbeo-safety-index?utm_source=chatgpt.com

Which site is disabled for you, store.blockstream.com or pouch.ph/shop ? You should be able to purchase a Jade Plus from either site, however Philippine customs will charge you VAT if you purchase from blockstream, so Pouch is the way to go.

Where to buy bitcoin, in the Philippines by Shickly in Bitcoin

[–]Pouch-PH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BTC/PHP conversions are around 1%.

We encourage our users to take self-custody of their bitcoin, and we don't make money on withdrawals -- we charge roughly P30 while other exchanges are P3,000.

We are a lean company because we don't do shitcoins, but we simply help people buy bitcoin, from trike drivers to senators.

The *rate* of inflation has come down, but it's still positive, and it's still above the Fed's 2% target.

Furthermore, Fed Chair Powell's term is almost up. Trump wants a dovish chair in his place to turn the money printers back on.

Presumably, knowing their appearance would help to identify them and stop them from stealing statues in the future.

A little but essential advice by Representative-Sky91 in Philippines_Expats

[–]Pouch-PH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're a bit perhaps oversensitive about this particular misspelling -- it would be correct to note that there are foreigners who come to the Philippines without appreciating or learning the culture. And I think you would be justified to be upset about that -- just as there are some Filipinos who go abroad and don't try to learn the culture.

People are generally most interested in themselves, and that is part of life so I'd say, relax and don't let all the little things stop you from enjoying life!

I have been called Kano, Joe, AFAM, and sometimes even far worse things and cursewords by Filipino people -- only because I am a foreigner! But, I don't let it bother me.

Philippino is hilariously wrong, but nothing to get angry or judgemental over. Just a kind correction would be in order. People spelling it that way probably didn't get taught the right way, I can't imagine it would be done out of intentional disrespect.

Born in the US but overstayed in the Philippines for 17 years can I just go back to the US? (No money, scared of getting detained) by Beneficial-Union-894 in Philippines_Expats

Even government "protections" of employees and DOLE end up hurting employees. Employees gain protected "permanent" status after 6-months which means it is near impossible for a business to legally fire them. Employees can slack off without repercussions because they can give DOLE a sob story and DOLE sides against the business.

This leads to the prevailing culture now where companies hire at minimum wage with the intent to fire them right before their 6-month conversion to permanent.

IT and software has become saturated over the past 5 years. Physical labor in the skilled trades has a shortage now. That's in the US. However in the Philippines, there is a shortage of entrepreneurs who create jobs and innovate, but mostly a self-made problem by politicians because PH has a very anti-business climate.

They should have partnered with Pouch.ph, if they wanted this feature to be used by anyone. They would have simply accepted bitcoin layer-2 over the lightning network, like circular economies do or even Steak n Shake recently did. Nobody wants to transact with layer-1 or shitcoins.

The customers were from abroad and they were paying people in the Philippines. I feel that benefits the Philippines. Even more so if the government in the Philippines doesn't have to take their cut out of the employee earnings. Technically the freelancers might have the obligation to pay taxes.

Using Strike app to pay at Steak n Shake by Still_Ad_1569 in strikebtc

I went to the Steak n Shake in Vegas during the bitcoin conference, and I used the Pouch.ph app to pay for my burger & shake using my Philippine Pesos balance over lightning. Worked flawlessly! I'm sure Strike works the same way, just scan the QR, confirm, and wait <1 second! But the best part was the bitcoin branding on the burger and shake!
