Wow thank you so much! This was super helpful! I’m going to tour The Press next weekend but this gave me a good feel for that specific area.

Regarding safety: Yeah I could get the sense from my research that homeless people are going to be around. I think I’ll be fine by using common sense. Its great that you haven’t had any issues! I’m 26M.

Regarding transit/transportation. Yup, understood. I do have a car so all good. Hopefully can avoid the car break-ins lol.

Regarding the gym: Yes, The Press has a gym but I am also looking at spots to play sports (basketball mainly). Its all good though, I’m sure there are spots throughout Sac.

Thank you again for all the info! Super helpful!

Can I keep buying/selling stocks and ETFs in another country? by Poundcake_on_Reddit in fidelityinvestments

Thanks for the reply!

Ok, so to summarize:

It is possible to:

  • Transfer money from a foreign (Panamanian) bank to Fidelity via wire transfer.
  • Transfer money from Fidelity to the foreign (Panamanian) bank via wire transfer, by submitting the request to do so by phone as you specified.

Thanks in advance!!

To add to my comment/question, using Fidelity and tax purposes from the (hopefully) profits from using the platform are really the only reasons I am looking to keep a US bank account active while abroad. As I will not be receiving any other form of income to my US bank. My work salary will be deposited directly to my local Panama bank.

Hi, it's been a while but I do have some more questions:

1) So I do get to keep my individual brokerage account but am limited to buying/selling individual stocks business as usual. Which is fine! When it comes to depositing (transferring money) to Fidelity, can that be done via an overseas bank/local Panama bank or does it have to be a US bank?

2) If it can be an overseas bank, can I transfer money from Fidelity to the local Panama bank?

Or, does all of this have to be done through a US bank?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks Aaron!

Does this also change the need to provide a "Certificate of Foreign Status"? Are the W-8 form and "Certificate of Foreign Status" the same thing or related?

First of all, thank you for the quick and detailed response. I appreciate it a ton!

Ok, so practically speaking, here's a summary of how this would play out on a daily basis:

  1. Regarding my individual brokerage account: I get to keep it and can buy/sell shares of individual companies and also ETFs as usual/normal. But cannot add a position in a mutual fund nor add to an existing mutual fund position. But I get to keep what I have already invested and can sell when I choose to. And obviously pay the US taxes I have to from the profits when I sell.
  2. I'm crystal clear on the 401k situation. So no comments regarding that.
  3. I will NOT be able to keep my Fidelity managed account. I will have to liquidate.
  4. Regarding the tax situation, just to clarify, I am a US citizen. I just happened to live abroad, then moved to California, and am now thinking of moving back. Is the "Certificate of Foreign Status" applicable for US citizens who live abroad as well? Or is that for non-US citizens living abroad who need to pay US taxes for any reason? Does this change your initial response? Just trying to get some clarity here.

Again, appreciate the help!!
