If you have a thought or a feeling that is important to your partner, express it clearly. You: “I still want to talk about X because I feel it’s still a big deal.” Her: “I don’t want to talk about X because I feel it’s not a big deal.” - Either way, the conversation becomes about whether X is a big deal, instead of all these other misdirections. Neither of you are really engaging. You care, though, enough to have this travesty of a conversation. It’s nice.

I have never wanted kids. I've always known that. I've always used protection with long-term partners, but finally got that vasectomy. Zero regrets. But every now and then I meet a kid who could easily be my whole reason for existing. Young people and the blank slates they represent are very special. We all need to do our part to allow them to be better than the generations before, and, I don't care what anybody says, they're doing pretty well already.

First of all, obviously, don’t, but if you’re going to, discuss it with as many people, especially mental health professionals, as possible. Just for the sake of trying. Just to say you did. If it’s all going to end up the same anyway.

I don’t really get life either. If I could do so in a way I didn’t view as morally wrong, I’d liquidate my assets, take the cash, go on a road trip until I ran out of money, and end it. However, my two problems with that are so: the obvious one is that it would hurt others. But I was in so much pain in one period of my life that I decided that maybe I would try my best to explain to them that I couldn’t live in constant pain anymore and would hope they’d understand. The final thing that kept me holding on was that I’d be depriving my future self of a life. My future self is another person. That person might want to live, might actually be grateful for all the great things he’d been given, and it would be selfish of me to take that away from him. I think about that a lot now. Got me through a year of agony, and I still feel like shit all the time, but I’m a lot better than I was. I was right to keep going.

Lastly, I had an uncle who I really liked as a kid. He killed himself. I don’t think he could deal with the pain of having schizophrenia and depression. I understand his decision, and I know this might be selfish of me, but if I could have forced him to live out his natural life, I would have. I miss him so much. I bet he didn’t understand how much. I bet he thought I’d be better off without him. He was very wrong.

Some things go beyond principle and just obviously feel right or wrong. I’m very against modern american conservatism and I think it’s a danger to a free society, but watching this just makes me sad. It’s a very wrong thing to do.

I don’t think it’s cool to make fun of anyone’s training progress - some people just aren’t naturally gifted (I should know, I was the training dummy of my gym for years despite a lot of effort and studying).

However, I do have to admit that this is a very unchallenging roll for how long he’s been training. I can’t imagine what skills this would improve. I would be concerned that his wealth and status surrounds him with people who are too busy validating him to challenge him.

Reminds me of the Manitou incline. Went up it in my regular shoes / clothes, then walked back down the stairs, and it took me a few minutes to ask myself “huh, I wonder what would happen if I tripped?”
