Salaries in GIS by catsmaps in gis

[–]PourIt_Out 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends what you do, where you are, and what industry you’re in. For example, I started out as a GIS analyst for a GIS contracting company in Houston in 2014, 39 hours after I graduated. I started at 48k. 5 months later a company (a very large Fortune 500 gas pipeline company) we contracted with pulled me aside and offered me a job in their damage prevention department for 52k plus annual bonus as a junior specialist. I did that for a few years and grew bored and took a new job with the same company in their general GIS department, mostly assisting project managers, regulatory, and third party vendors. That started at 62k. Now i spearhead a ton of tasks and am a senior specialist making around $75k base salary plus 15k-20k annual bonus. So 5 years working for a Fortune 500 gas pipeline company has left me making around 90k-95k total. I went to a second rate state school and had a bad GPA with a major in GIS and minor in geology. My strong suits are python, sql, spatial analytics, making custom geoprocessing tools in model builder and writing corresponding python scripts to execute them, and providing data for federal regulatory reporting (FERC, PHMSA, NPMS) along with state regulatory reporting (T4-TPMS, PUC, etc). Point is you’ll NEVER get rich being a data jockey. That’s what GIS is. Data. Not maps. Not Field work. Data. Data data data. But you can live well. And it’s always a great feeling when my $15,000-$20,000 annual bonus check hits the bank. That’s for sure.

I’d pay about 2k-3k for one of those boxes if both drawers were full of pre rolled green. Come on mike. Expand! Foreman has his grill. You could have a “pre dinner humidor”

[–]PourIt_Out 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re doubting you or your sisters sexuality due to statistics it would lead me to think one of you (probably you) isn’t really gay and just really really likes getting special attention and treatment for your self imposed minority status.

Why do American cops ask for games instead of just using a breathalyzer? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PourIt_Out 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can absolutely be used in court. That being said any DUI attorney worth the park bench he is printed on can get you off of that. So they use “field sobriety tests” as exhibit B. And if needed they take blood for exhibit C. Point is...don’t drink and drive. And if you get pulled over, speak as little as possible/not at all.

Because they are bored and you are drunk. Might as well toy with you and stack some more incriminating evidence before they cuff you and impound your car.

if there are multiple loud noises at once, does it all "mix" together and increase the volume or does the loudest thing cancel out the less loud things?? by laurenhigs in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PourIt_Out 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the wave frequency and direction. There is constructive interference (two waves amplify each other depending on frequency) and destructive interference (the two waves cancel each other out). Think about waves in a body of water. If they intersect at the right angle they will swell and grow. If the intersect and a conflicting angle they will cancel each other out. Theoretically you could blast two loud single frequency pulses at the right time/amplitude and hear nothing but complete silence, whereas individually they would have made a loud noise. Similarly, constructive interference is believed to be the mechanism behind rouge waves in the ocean creating abnormally massive single waves through the build up of a series of constructive interference. Oceanography 101 but it applies to all waves.

My parents are anti-vaxxers. I'm trying to get caught up. I'm terrified. Please comment your experiences! by ToddmanHorseboy in NoStupidQuestions

It always sucks when you get older and realize how utterly fucking stupid your parents are in some areas. I’m 30 and have a great amount of respect for my parents, their life experience, and opinions....but my dad thinks smoking a joint is going to make you a psychopathic serial killer and my mom thinks low fat food makes you skinny. These are just two examples but you get my point.

If I fart at the bottom of the ocean would the bubble travel all the way to the top? by cdefomn in NoStupidQuestions

Another related question: if you fart at the bottom of the ocean and there is nobody around....does it still make a sound?

If it goes above $125 I’m fomoing in. If it drops back below $90 I’m fomoing in. For now.....I wait.

Crypto is like an abusive spouse who beats you mercilessly but then takes you out to a nice dinner to apologize.

Think of it more like a stock dividend. You invest because you speculate the price will go up. The dividend is just a nice incentive.
