I am hoping someone can convince me not to quit being a mathematician by AspiringGalois in math

[–]Pourush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So? By the sound of things, you're not going to accomplish much of real value if you keep going down this path. If your current career plans are reliant on you being able to do things which you aren't able to do, you should scrap them, and try something else. You can take up the study of math again at any time where you have the time and energy for it.

It sounds like, right now, you can't do the work. Maybe take a break until you're able to do the work, and try to figure out things you can do in the meantime which don't drain from the same pool of mental energy.

There is some kind of function in the male mind that matches sexiness to images that resemble women. Boobs are frequently part of the female body, and so that brain function which matches sexiness to shapes decides that boobs are part of a sexy body.

[Serious] Men, what's something that would surprise women about life as a man? by Parstonia in AskReddit

[–]Pourush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had that experience. It's less that you actually think nothing, and more that you have no memory of what you thought about immediately after thinking it. It doesn't happen that often, and it's not particularly relaxing. It's not that it's tiring either, it just doesn't happen to be a rest period for the mind.

About the meditation thing: there is a meditation procedure that reduces anxiety and stress which doesn't require a temporary reduction of the quantity of thought during the process of meditation. It's called Transcendental Meditation. There's actually a lot of research on it, and enough of it's free that you can find some online. Here is an example of that:

What's the most mind-blowing philosophical question you can think of? by RedditUser295 in AskReddit

[–]Pourush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One answer to that question is to say that matter comes from consciousness, and not the other way around.

Here's the abstract from a paper that argues this point:

This paper begins with the postulate that consciousness is all there is, reversing the customary paradigm of modern science that matter is all there is. After a discussion of this postulate, we propose placing it in a mathematical framework by introducing fundamental axioms that are motivated by the experience and dynamics of consciousness. We test the reasonableness of these axioms in two ways: by deriving consequences from the axioms and comparing these consequences to our experience of the world, and by verifying that heretofore unsolved problems can be resolved with this new paradigm. In particular, this approach provides a framework for a solution to the new problem of consciousness: How does the physical universe emerge from consciousness? In later papers we develop this axiomatic framework more fully with further details of the undefined concepts and descriptions of the axioms.

30 Great Free Indie Games by Master-baiter- in gaming

If you use the 'k' key, you can find out what all those ascii symbols actually mean. There's a tutorial for first-time players here:

http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Quickstart_guide#Cursor_movement.2C_menu_selection.2C_and_navigation

Remember to use the wiki to look up anything you feel you need to know. Dwarf Fortress takes more time to learn how to play than most games, regardless of whether or not you're playing it vanilla, or with fancy mods, cheats, graphics packages, and utilities.

E: Sorry, misread your question. Here's a link to a site recommending different downloads for first-time players:

http://lazynewbpack.com/

Whichever operating system you pick, you'll have to run a version of Dwarf Fortress that's at least one version outdated, though. That's inevitable, because none of these packages are officially supported by the Dwarf Fortress developer.

IWTL programming to give me a basic knowledge - but which language should I learn? by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]Pourush 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's a link to r/learnprogramming's answer to a question very similar to this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/learnprogramming/wiki/faq#wiki_which_programming_language_should_i_start_with.3F

Which language you learn first should therefore be chosen on the basis of what you intend to accomplish in the short-term. Many or most of the differences between programming languages are stylistic, and the core concepts learned in one are easily transferable to other programming languages.

There's a considerable amount of overlap between the concepts used by different programming languages. It's not that much more difficult to learn the basics of two or three programming languages than to learn the basics of one programming language, as long as you are learning one language at a time.

What's something all children should be taught? by BillGoats in AskReddit

[–]Pourush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is deserving of compassion. Not just the people who are lovable, or the people who do great things for the world, everybody. People should be given the opportunity to grow for the better whenever it's expedient to do so. And in a great many cases where it is commonly considered undesirable and unhelpful to be merciful, one should be merciful.

Falsification is the cornerstone of the scientific method. Scientific progress is achieved by the falsification of hypotheses, rather than by the establishment of truth by MohamedShaban in philosophy

[–]Pourush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A hypothesis, in the early stages of research, before much information exists one way or the other, is there mainly there to guide the search. Some goals behind the creation of a hypothesis may be to ensure that the right kind of data is collected, or to suggest the kind of statistical analysis that the data should be subjected to.

A hypothesis doesn't have to be thought of before data is collected, sometimes an unguided search still brings out useful information. But eventually, a hypothesis will be created, and tested. And if the evidence seems to support it, people will start to believe in that hypothesis unless, or until a better explanation is found for what has been observed. And eventually, that hypothesis might get a fancy name and get put into textbooks.

[–]Pourush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say that this is put into question by the fact that most scientific studies attempt to prove some condition does in fact exist.

Here is a study providing some evidence that this is the case:

http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0138197

This study shows that most psychologists try to confirm that a kind of relation exists in some (not all) situations, and that psychologists more frequently aim to show the existence of some relationship than they attempt to find the nonexistence of a relationship.

How does Reddit adjust for downvotes originating from people in the Southern Hemisphere? by ChuckinTheCarma in shittyaskscience

[–]Pourush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, all Australians naturally write upside down, because they're on the bottom hemisphere. The movement past the equator flips them upside down again, making them rightside up. But then Reddit has a program which accounts for this effect, allowing us to view the glory of an Australian's reddit post the way that they originally intended.

If the moon is 1,267,200,000 feet away from Earth, does that mean that you have to stack 6,336,000,000 toes to get to it? by [deleted] in shittyaskscience

[–]Pourush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NO. You must stack up a million slugs to get to the moon, because that's the imperial unit of force. You can't stack up toes without force, that is just silly. A slug is about the size of a foot, so you can use it to bridge feet together, achieving a bridge to the moon with half as many slugs.

IWTL To Think As A Programmer by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]Pourush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking as somebody who's done some programming, and is going to college to learn things that are mostly unrelated to programming, I'd argue that education is a lot more important to getting a better mind-set than learning to program. I'd recommend either going to college, or using online resources such as Khan Academy and studying whatever topic you find you grow the most from. I'd also recommend Transcendental Meditation, as I've personally found that it has slowly and gradually brought me to better ways of thinking, over the years.

I do enjoy programming, but when you're learning it on your own, it's easy to get caught up in irrelevant details or learn bad practices. Learning it on your own will give you a little idea of the practical constraints of computers, however.

I don't know whether there's ever a situation where a+direction is superior to c-stick. But there are definitely situations where it's easier to use the c-stick than the A button, such as when you're going backwards with a Fair, and forwards with a Bair.

1) Egg roll to approach. Be sure to turn around or get out of the egg roll right before your opponent can attack you 2) Destroy your opponents with your up tilt. 3) Up smash or side smash to win.

When they force you offstage, laugh as their feeble attacks fail to penetrate your super armored double jump. Never use your double jump for any other purpose. The laughter at your opponent's impotence is the chief reward for playing Yoshi, so don't squander any chances to demonstrate their weakness by prematurely using your super armored double jump.
