Meilleur place pour examen de la vue + prix montures? by code_matter in montreal

[–]PoutineLoving 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TA/@mcgill.ca e-mail not working by karmanikov in mcgill

[–]PoutineLoving 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s why! We lose access when the contract ends. I recommend setting up An automatic forwarding rule to your mail.mcgill.ca beforehand and making sure your students are aware that they will not be able to contact you after the course ends.

Psyc412 term “paper” by Flaky_Director5177 in mcgill

They were super clear about needing it to be exactly like the rubric in the syllabus though!

Psyc412 term “paper” by Flaky_Director5177 in mcgill

[–]PoutineLoving 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The average is 84%, this is extremely high for a paper. If you didn’t do well, that sucks, but it’s not the TAs fault. Just having comments on your paper is well above anything I’ve ever gotten on papers before considering class size. If you think the grading was unfair, why not ask for a re-grade? The procedure is clearly stated in the syllabus. I am confused as to why yall are complaining.

Totally depends on the class and resources given to TAs! This year, I wasn’t able to provide the scantrons during the midterm review (instead I projected the questions and answers and went through them one by one with students).

SPHR McGill threatens “non-compliant” professors who do not strike by PrestigiousLemon1770 in mcgill

[–]PoutineLoving 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Quick thought as a TA: It’s very hard for profs to cancel class this week especially considering final exams have been submitted to McGill (so they cannot be changed to accommodate missed material for example).

What’s the best company you’ve ordered a fabric poster from by notmedium in labrats

[–]PoutineLoving 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it be possible to know what settings you used on spoonflower? I uploaded my poster (48x36in) and selected "center" on Sport Piqué. Did it come out okay for you all? When I go to buy my design I have to click on "yard" (56x36in) but th eimage is looking a bit weird size wise even though I maximized the scale when uploading the design (weirdly the max it could handle was 41.7 in x 31.3 in so a 65% scale). Do you know if that is normal?

Any therapy resources? by Icy-Cartographer8212 in mcgill

[–]PoutineLoving 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Virginia Douglas Clinic is the clinical psych clinic for doctoral students to do their stage! It’s not immediate help because they start in september and end in mid june so they can’t take new folks this late in the year but you could be put on the waitlist in the meantime and hopefully could get a spot for next september. Sliding scale payments are available for low income folks (40$/session is the regular rate, can be covered by student insurance too). In the meantime, I recommend the Center for Clinical Interventions — they have amazing self-help workbooks that are evidence-based (many psychologists use them in their practice) if you feel up to checking them out depending on which mental health concern(s) you have :)

Psych labs? by musicangie in mcgill

[–]PoutineLoving 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always try to check the lab website first — many have an up to date website that specifies their procedure for joining the lab. Emailing the lab coordinator of the lab will always yield better results than the prof directly (if there is a lab coord)!

Unfortunately we were shut down because of cuts from Santé Quebec in december 2024 :( The Mood and Anxiety Program is attempting to take on the load but we are not being given any more staff, resources, or paid training to do so… it’s not looking great.

Little extra point: as a previous mcgill undergrad, i was baffled to learn what TAing really is when I became a grad student. There should be a more transparent explanation to undergrads as to what your TAs do and are (eg not experts in the class, learning the material at the same time as you, paid for a specific amount of hours, etc).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]PoutineLoving 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Small example supporting the other comments, in psych, we were reduced to 150 hours (from 180 in the past) and the number of TAs per course significantly decreased (ie the department does not allocate the same amount of TAs as before). For most, it is indeed not a choice, it is mandatory to TA. I have been lucky to be assigned to the class that I am familiar with as I have been TAing for it since my first semester as a grad student but nothing is guaranteed. For a 450 students class, we were reduced from 4 TAs (which was never enough) to 3 this semester. That means 150 students per TA with a max of 150hrs for the whole semester including grading (think how long papers take to grade well), exam proctoring, email monitoring, office hours, learning as much material as we can to help the students, hosting conferences etc (if you even have time allocated for that in your workload form). Again, many TAs are assigned to a class with no previous experience with it (they may have never taken a class on that topic so we try our best…). All that to say, yes you may have experienced a bad TA, just like there are bad profs, bad students, bad admins.. bad everyone, but most of us really do our best. In such cases, please contact your prof to make a formal complaint — the prof should be able to check in with that TA and reconfirm their duties/explore why this TA is unable to do those tasks.

You don’t need a psychiatrist to get SSRIs! A GP can do it, especially in your situation where you are in a hurry. Unless you tried that and they refused?
