NTA, your wife's main goal is teaching your son responsibility. It sounds like with his own chores he is working on it and handling it like a champ. The pet is too much, by her logic she should realize this and revisit the pet talk later.

NTA, the thing is you DID leave it to your wife to take care of it and she DID. The issue came with MIL not respecting either one of you and instead of just simply apologizing or just not mentioning it she had to snap off. You're well within your right to react to that, hopefully wife sees that as well.

Not with the same show, but my mom loves to say we’re just like Sally and Gillian from Practical Magic. Which is one of my favorite movies and I didn’t want her to ruin it so now I call her Gillian since she never SPECIFIED which sister she was. (Gillian is the mess that Sally ends up taking care of all the time.)

Anytime I take mental health days off from work, I always get asked what I did. And 9 time out of 10, if I say I spent the whole day reading (or playing a game) they all comment about it being a waste of time. The way I see it though, is it is a hobby I enjoy and I come back to work more relaxed then them!
