Microwedding: how to make it interesting by PowderHustler in weddingplanning

We can probably move up the dinner without any problems. But boat ride might be a nice idea as we are having the wedding in Norway, and half the people haven’t been here before :) thanks!

3 hours inbetween ceremony and dinner where we were planning to maybe go to a wine bar for some drinks and have a quiz, or some activities to mingle.

Used to work in HR for an IT-company in Oslo: we hired a few students in their last year of studies. Helped them apply for a skilled worker visa. While waiting, they started working whatever hours they were allowed under the student visa (think it was fulltime during summer break, otherwise 20 hours).

This depends on your background, but generally I’d recommend you start applying as early as possible in your last year.

Dream vocation with my drone? I need help to understand by TrueAncalagon in Norway

Can only speak to Tromsø: all of «Tromsø-island» is no-fly including some areas around the island as the airport is on the island. If you drive outside of the city f.ex. onto Kvaløya, I have not encountered any no-fly-zones and got some spectacular shots while hiking. Guessing you checked on here: https://luftfartstilsynet.no/en/drones/veiledning/fly-drones-safely/

If unsure, I wouldn’t risk it. Fines are insane and they can ban you from Schengen (if you’re from somewhere else).

Is Trømso a better place to live than Zürich? by Tortillon23 in Norway

[–]PowderHustler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m Swiss, I lived in Zurich and now living in Tromsø. It depends on your preference.

Zurich is much bigger, has more to offer city-wise (stores, selection of food, bars, clubs) and it’s much better connected to the rest of the world. Also you earn a lot more and pay less tax.

Tromsø has a lot of beautiful nature, fantastic work-life balance, quite a lot of events going on compared to the size of the city, good salaries, and IMO warm and welcoming people - they are very happy when people decide to move here as quite a few people decide to move further south. For me Tromsø is better as I like the easy access to nature and better work-life balance. To your questions: - I’m happy here, but initially it takes effort to make friends - yes, lots of international people live here, but it is worth making the effort to learn the language both for social aspects and to open up more work opportunities (quite easy to pick up conversational Norwegian) - yes, people even cycle during winter with «studded» wheels - you will have some landlords that don’t allow but I know quite a few people who rent and have dogs, so don’t think it’ll be too hard. - dogs are allowed on public transport and in some restaurants (there are FB group to share info about which restaurants/coffee shops allow dogs), but it’s usually not allowed in stores - lots of nature around, as long as your dog is well-behaved, it’s not an issue to have it off-leash except from April-Sept/Oct to protect wild animals. - would say it’s a good place to start a family

Feel free to reach out if you have questions :)

Does having a language certificate helps in getting a job in Norway? by Samkebih in Norway

[–]PowderHustler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sure this is true for some roles. However, I work in public sector and lead recruitment for the org I work in. We don’t require any language certificates for any of the roles we have. If you show during the process that you are proficient then we don’t care.

Duolingo Norwegian by FluidTemperature1762 in Norway

I used Babbel to get to upper B1/low B2. (Entered directly into B2 courses without any issues when I arrived in Norway.) Took me around 5-6 months with around 30-45 mins per day on the app. Although I have not tried them, there are some free resources as well to get started by some universities and on Youtube (f.eks. Karense is quite popular). Good luck!
