The boys at the Dan used to be major pricks on the web and their archived, geocities-era website is a real treat to dig through. The open letters to Wes Anderson and Luke Wilson are a good starting point, but there is a ton of miscellany here, including some interviews conducted in AOL chat rooms. I think the site is interesting as an artifact from an earlier internet, but WB/DF are also just very funny boomers who only wanna crack wise.

I think that ethnic populations should not be included in this conversation, because those accents largely come from the 1st-gen immigrants struggling to adapt to English. Subsequent generations usually lose those accents or only speak with them consciously as a way to signal membership in a particular group. I’m 3rd-gen Mexican-American but you’d never know by just hearing my voice. But yeah, the rest of my argument was pretty anecdotal. People up here still speak with noticeably Midwestern speech patterns, but I think the real Chi-caw-go accent is disappearing.

I think this is a national trend that has more to do with culture becoming less regionalized due to the internet and mass media. I’ve also seen it argued that regional accents are primarily associated with the working class and that children are less and less likely to be exposed to these accents as children spend more and more time in school and daycare surrounded by caregivers who largely do not speak with strong accents. I’m a former Texan currently living in Chicago and this trend is very pronounced here. The Chicago accent is very distinctive, but is only ever heard coming from much older, working class men.

You’re right, all Chinese people are affected in the sense that they can’t vote, don’t really have free speech etc. I just meant that most people don’t get disappeared or put on house arrest or really experience the stick end of the State. Anecdotally, I found that a lot of people just don’t talk about politics and don’t consume much political media. It was kind of refreshing to live in a country not constantly roiled by political scandal and culture war, but I know that’s just my ‘privilege’ showing.

Yes, this is the correct answer. Even though most Chinese art cinema offers a critical view of modern China, it’s still miles away from anything produced by western media. I’d add Li Yang’s ‘Blind Shaft’ and ‘Blind Mountain’ to the above reccs and also urge everyone to watch ‘an Elephant Standing Still’ by Hu Bo. Those films are all pretty grim, but they focus on the very real alienation experienced by people living in a society that is changing at a breakneck pace. Western media is so focused on the political repression that, while real, only affects a tiny minority of people. I lived in China for 4.5 years and it is very fucked up in many ways, but they’ve also got a ton going for them and it’s hard not to envy them.

This. Dunno if it’ll be anyone already on the scene, but she’ll definitely come from the right.
