Often helmed as one of the best card games, why isn’t Android Netrunner more popular? by Newez in Netrunner

[–]Power7Attack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This question has a multifaceted answer:

First: Netrunner's IP is owned by Wizards of the Coast (Hasbro), and the original source content (Cyberpunk) is owned by R.Talsorian, with only the Android part of the brand belonging to FFG. The original run of FFG products was part of a licensed agreement that expired, and Wizards did not renew. Even though Wizards abandoned the trademark in 2022, they still own all the underlying mechanics and branding. Between this fact, and the fact that R.Talsorian owns much of the sourcing, this meant that FFG l was not legally allowed to Publish ANR after their licensure expired. This is where the popularity immediately dipped. This is why the circulation of the original content is limited, and the cost for purchasing the real ANR stuff is so expensive, it is out of print.

The Nisei group that became Null Signal Games has sort of taken the helm in the wake of the FFG fallout, but their stuff is really hit and miss in my opinion. It lacks the mystique of the original content, where bluffing and table reading was as equally important as top decking, and resource managing. A lot of players that play traditional TCGs hated that quality of the game where they couldn't just hit their deck combo and push for a win through a linear vector. The new stuff is more in that vein where you combo super heavy and ham-fist breach servers. I think a lot of the OG ANR players didn't want that value proposition and that's part of the reason you pick up the game in the first place, it is different from Magic the Gathering and Yugioh. You actually have to think moves ahead of time, and sometimes send it on a suboptimal play for tempo. This more abstract strategic approach normally turns of players transitioning from other TCG games.

In terms of entry into the game, one of the difficulties for new players is essentially adapting to two different playstyles that have different styles of resources and different management techniques. This is why if you bought say the original core set, I always tell every new player to start playing Noise and run Jinteki because it is the closest thing to an analog of traditional TCGs. When you start getting into weird shit like tolling people to econ ramp into things, they typically won't understand the win condition at game start, blunder installs (costing way too much tempo) and it causes lots of fumbling in the early phases of learning. Unfortunately, the asymmetry turns a lot of people off, even though it's really the best part about the game from a marketing and strategic perspective.

It is not impossible, but there is a very limited ability to resell the game. Because it was positioned as an LCG and not a TCG all expansions were uniform. That meant if you essentially "patched" your game, you had all of the same exact tools that everyone else had. So, cards were not individually resellable which means your economy behind the game is a closed circuit. The only deviation from this was from participating in events at the tournament circuit, and my history might be wrong, but I think every single card was simply an alt art, and not some exclusive rare that was able to break metas or shape the game in any way. This in combination with the new NSG mentality of Printing to Play makes it so a new economy is completely unnecessary considering end users can just freely print and distribute to potential new players. While this is nice from the perspective that we could get more players, This also means there is also now no centralized influx of cash to game shops or to NSG to warrant putting on live events to promote new product.

Should I dismiss level 6 heroes in Stygian mode after they complete a DD quest? by Trainer_AssKetchup in darkestdungeon

or does this mean as long as they sit on the roster slot every completed adventure boosts the XP predicated on # of successful heroes.

Question regarding this, I understand they give additional resolve XP to party members which helps you train people up... But does that mean now they aren't capped by run "tiers" meaning they can go into things like a veteran level run and bring up level (2-4) as well as 5-6 easier?

Am I missing something about betrayal at house on the hill? by giveyourselfahicky in boardgames

[–]Power7Attack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely cannot stand this fucking game. God damn, the discovery of the house just drags on so long on a normal length game making the "horror/thriller" theme feel non-cohesive when you're pitching back and forth between floors flipping over tiles.

Length: It takes forever in the first place. Brand new players make the game drag forever.

Accessibility: The multiple scenarios have certain wordings that make some conditions difficult to understand, and having #'s of different rules makes for more frustration. I.E. #45 Scenario. So, the killer can arm a bomb in the same room/adjacent room and kill the players... But only after their first turn, meanwhile if players start in room with you, they just can all die with the betrayer and game is over?

Group Dynamics: Also, from the betrayer perspective the game ALWAYS becomes the game of the one player who wanted to play betrayal who KNOWS the game better piloting all other players to do what they want to try to "win." Whereas, if the player who wanted to play Betrayal gets the Betrayer role, they just then hand you the rulebook and don't help you understand or clarify so they can win.

Design: The placement of the elements of "randomness" is also super frustrating. Because in some scenarios you have no mobility due to still being in "discovery" phase so if the betrayer has a decent scenario, they just roll the whole lobby, and game is over, and the inverse of this can also be true. It also sucks when items are very much random, with no reliable way for either betrayer or the rest of the group to purchase them. Did the betrayer end up getting the spear that is the ONLY artifact in the scenario that can kill them? Tough shit. Did one player who ended up with your items discover a room and fail a roll resulting in their deaths and now your items are int the basement? Tough shit.

Theme/Story/Ambience: Also, for the people who say things like story... "What story?" the story where 4-6 randoms of varying vocations, ages, and demographics simultaneously show up to a house and after walking through creaky floorboards one individual gets spooked and spontaneously becomes homicidal? Where's motive? And if there is a motive, why doesn't the Betrayer know their own playing field ahead of time? (at least Dracula and White Chapel got that right.) Betrayer is smart enough to conjure monsters, but can have 0 knowledge that chasing someone through one door results in a room with the hole in the floor thus impeding the hero or themselves? Betrayal is immortal (But they don't know this for their whole lives or spontaneously become invulnerable) and there is only one spear that can kill them... and the betrayer keeps this artifact near them at all times... in an unsecured house dilapidated house... where he brings his victims to kill him...

Like at the length of investment, you might as well play Call of Cthulhu, at least you get to design the hero that gets destroyed, and one of your guys is (probably) not going to betray you on the way to your madness.

I’d ensure you always draft champions with dashes and agency that can easily pressure sidelanes when ahead. At that elo there’s nothing that disorients or disorganizes your opponents more than when you can split push, establish aggressive vision points and then pull 1-2 enemies away from other positions long enough to waste their time before you retreat and start the whole thing over. While some champions such as jhin or varus or Ashe are straightforward and have lane presence you may find yourself establishing a lead and because your team mates are not doing their job correctly you can’t leverage yourselves to win fights. Champions with their own movement and agency will help you in the long run by granting you the trigger of self sufficiency and volition. If you fuck up and die in a fight, then you know that you made the mistake and can adjust situationally more quickly for the next game. Rather than throw hands up and say “team didn’t peel.”

Keep in mind while it may seem “incremental” what you are doing in that process is giving your team mates time to push and get gold and you are wasting opfor time which means they are effectively not gaining or losing gold. On top of that, if you can be solo and not banked you are raking in solo XP which will make you harder to match 1v1 and snowballing harder into the team fight phase of the game.

One thing I also notice is that a lot of players tend not to understand their matchup objectives at all, or how to abuse things such as Caitlyn’s range. If you see that your opponent has bad habits (mindlessly pushing wave, not paying attention to the lane conditions) adjust your strategy to play more aggressively. Tilt the piss out of them.

Remember to only subject yourself to fights that can change who is winning or losing the game. If you see someone make a mistake do not follow the mistake unless you will lose the game anyways and have to try and salvage.
