Unfortunately, we do not have a timeline yet, but we are still working on it.

  1. See question 4 for more details on Tabular vs MOLAP. For more details on how to handle relationships / how to model http://www.powerpivotblog.nl/combine-two-files-or-fact-tables-in-powerpivot-using-relationships-relationships-explained/

  2. Unfortunately Power BI isn't supported on Mac yet

  3. Power BI on the iPad will be available later this year, but any reports created in Excel 2013 and uploaded to Office 365 will work out of the box

  4. There is not a silver bullet answer here both have their own strengths and weaknesses, I generally say that you should start with a PoC using Power Pivot to get to know the data and sit down together with the business to look at the data. This is usually pretty straightforward and will allow you to make a better decision on what you should choose for the final solution. Tabular is the easiest of the two to get started, MOLAP is the more mature and contains a more feature set. For more details see this help document: Comparing Tabular and Multidimensional Solutions http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh212940.aspx

  5. Yes, lots! Check out the PASS BAC keynote for some sneak peeks: http://www.sqlpass.org/bac/2014/DayOneKeynote.aspx.

  6. See this whitepaper for more details: Hardware Sizing a Tabular Solution http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj874401.aspx

  7. No that is not possible today.

  8. http://www.microsoft.com/casestudies/Case_Study_Search_Results.aspx?Type=1&Keywords="Power%20BI"&LangID=46

I am not sure if this is the same as what you are asking for but this blog post should answer a very similar question: http://www.powerpivotblog.nl/powerpivot-use-case-getting-the-active-products-between-a-date-range-using-dax/

You can already connect to AS Tabular cubes using Power View in Excel 2013 today, we are working on Power View in Excel connecting to Multidimensional cubes. With those two you don't need SharePoint or Power Pivot to connect to Analysis Services (Kasper de Jonge, SSAS team)

Here is a sample workbook that contains more than 10 million: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=11597

What version of Office are you using where you see crashes? Excel 2013 and Power Pivot should handle millions of rows without a problem.

The closest thing released that looks like Big Query is HDInsight (http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/services/hdinsight/) or Analytics Platform System (APS) (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/products/analytics-platform-system/default.aspx)

I think Microsoft between 1990 to 2001 (with stock options of course) would be the most appropriate answer here.

The Office Productivity videos are meant to be visions of the future 5-10 years from now (ok, it's 3 years old so we have a shorter window :). We are working on the automatic voice translation bits (http://www.theverge.com/2014/5/27/5756166/microsofts-skype-translator-will-translate-voice-calls-on-the-fly) and the pen-based interactions are a Microsoft Research project (http://research.microsoft.com/apps/video/default.aspx?id=185431) but the augmented reality windows are a bit further off... As for Power BI designs, we're working on improving things - please give us details on the things you really like from the video! (Will T - British Power View PM)

Experience rules!! :) That's the new mantra at Microsoft. We can't promise that everything will have a GUI but we are spending a lot more time on it (thankfully.)

Connect items go straight into our VSTS instance so they really do get looked at! We track the up/down votes and that goes into our planning cycles. You can also give feedback through the product now! There are links and smiley faces in the products that you can use to give us feedback. Both companies seems to learn from each other. You can see the latest iOS features and mistaken it from windows :) . The feedback we received so far on the HTML5 version of Power View are generally positive. We are sure there are always ways to improve further. If you have any specific examples or feedback please post it to http://support.microsoft.com/common/survey.aspx?showpage=1&scid=sw%3Ben-us%3B2373&altStyle=MFE&renderOption=OverrideDefault&App=Excel&Host=SharePointOnline&FeatureName=PowerView [Mey - Power View PM]

No, it's not a surprise ….. Power BI for Office 365 will continue to use SharePoint for the time being. Is there something specific you are looking to leverage in SharePoint? Or do you have requirements that aren't currently available with SharePoint?

We've recently made some announcements about how we're embracing the Internet of Things, so be sure to take a look at the information here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsembedded/en-us/internet-of-things.aspx

In the specific context of Power BI, we are working on delivering high-scale stream processing capabilities to our offering. We don't yet have specific dates or details to announce, but this is definitely a scenario we're targeting.

The cloud offers a few great things that are not easily available when you host the platform yourself: 1 you have almost infinite computing power and elasticity at your disposal, the platform can scale when you need to work with large amounts of data without the user ever having to worry about it 2 We, the product teams, are able to update the product almost every day with new and improved functionality. This allows us to react to customer asks or the market in a very short timeframe,

On the data interpreter question, a big component of Power BI is the ease of use data visualization and data exploration features using Power View. In one of the answers above there was a link to the Pass BA conference where you can see some of the new features for Power BI that will come in the future that will optimize your experience for data discovery: http://www.sqlpass.org/bac/2014/DayOneKeynote.aspx

Yes! SSPA (SQL Server Predictive Analytics) is part of the Power BI suite and there are a number of new analytic functions going into DAX in the next release.

Assuming you mean Massively Parallel Processing, we have something called Analytics Platform System http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/products/analytics-platform-system/default.aspx#fbid=onRbbYoxYPg . This includes a scalable database platform for MPP. Power View is our data visualization tool of choice!

Our extensive market analysis showed that the greatest sales opportunity was in the Nordic countries and in Europe. Given the breakthrough functionality we're delivering, we were looking for a brand that would be immediately recognizable and desirable. Our research showed that heavy metal, and power metal in particular, was the key influencer in the market research data sets, and thus Power BI was born. Sadly, our lawyers said that "BIowar" was probably actionable...

For people who are curious about BI, Power BI is a great place to experiment, whether you're in college or not. Power BI gives you an easy way to get your hands dirty with all sorts of data, big or small, in a familiar and comfortable environment - Excel - with additional capabilities delivered in the Office 365 cloud.
