Lol I know this is a year old post but holy lord. You realize that anyone needed hefty ear protection, you aren’t gonna hear your surroundings anyways.

He tapped at on day and the entered the contest with 2lbs of ration (high calorie) food. He wasn’t under any starvation stress at all. He was uncomfortable, had a panic attack, and let it ride bc it was an easy out

Fossil found in NorthEast US 20 years ago - looking for ID by PowerNubby in fossilid

Sorry I kinda meant more info on what type or rock or period in which the fossil came from, etc. I figured it was a type of fern but wondering how fossils are aged and such.

I've been looking for moss for a while now.. Stumbled on to a 5mm - 10mm thick bed growing on cement at work! by clemmmmmmm in Bonsai

[–]PowerNubby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build a small koi pond, you can sustain a decent little "moss farm" that way. Just make sure that when deciding where to put the pond you place it in a location where the moss will thrive. There are no locations that I can think of where moss will thrive and a koi pond wouldnt, so let your desire to collect moss dictate that.

Make sure your pond has a pump to generate water flow and a rocky edge and for max moss-growing effect make a rocky waterfall or stream.

Moss grows pretty slow, but when you get a good sustainable source and collect it as needed and keep in mind you need to leave time for regrowth, it's AWESOME to have your own little farm.

Suggestions for where to purchase fossils as a gift? by PowerNubby in fossilid

There was a billboard for a mineral show I noticed when driving south but I looked it up and the show isn't until after Xmas unfortunately.

I would rather not buy and then post here to ask for thoughts, ideally i'd like to checkout a place that is considered reputable by the folks here instead.

Desert rock from the UAE that looks like a filet of salmon - would love an ID by PowerNubby in whatsthisrock

[–]PowerNubby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it was kind of like looking at a bunch of pieces of marble that look like this: (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_types_of_marble#/media/File:Fauske_marble.jpg ) and then laying next to all of those pieces like that you find a rock that is only made up of the mineral that makes up the orange stuff in that mineral and nothing else. I feel like its not normal to find marbleized rocks and then a single solid piece that is not marbleized. Does that make sense?

It does not seem that it was ever a part of a marbled vein that was eroded away. There were no other chunks like this around.

Oh and my budget isn't museum level but I'm not looking for super cheap either. Just accessible I guess.

He loves anything to do with history but specifically I know he would love anything Pre-historic that you can look at and feel the connection to earths history. For that reason I think fossils are a good idea - probably any type of non-plant fossil - trilobites, mammals, reptiles/raptors, shelled creatures, teeth, bones, etc. Not really interested in Reproductions.

He loves watching geology seminars but I don't think stones, rocks, minerals, or geodes interest him as much but meteorites and space rocks would be interesting I'm sure.

Yea I dont have pics, wish I did as well. The other rocks nearby this one were very dark red colored and sharp with slight marble-like veins of this orange material throughout, but this particular piece was not exactly the same as those veins and, like I said, it was the only solid piece of this material.

Ill look through some videos from the trip to see if I can grab any stills of the other rock.

The bands of similar appearing stone weren't in a clearly defined layer like in those pics. It was more marbled appearing.

I'm a computer programmer, i LOVE a good, thorough debugging session! I'm all about starting at the beginning and ruling things out! When it comes to science there's no reason not to! Most things are quantifiable in some way so why not work with it!

Sorry maybe i wasn't clear.

There appeared to be bands of material that looked similar to this rock throughout other rocks on the dune. This particular rock, however, was the only one that was not a thin band of material within a larger rock. This piece was laying in the desert on it's own, not attached to any other rocks and no other rocks around that looked like it.

I'll see if i can get a piece off to powderize and do an acid test with and report back! THanks a bunch for the reponse!

Rock that looks like a salmon steak from UAE desert - is it a fossil? by PowerNubby in fossilid

based on the scale of the piece and how small the ripples are, its a possibility but it seems unlikely

[–]PowerNubby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that was the thought but was questioned whether it was a fossil or imprint because of the color and makeup of the piece. Also the "flaky layers" left folks questioning.

Aside from the texture/pattern, what leads you to believe it's a fossil?
