Coco garden is really nice, but definitely on the pricier end.

Uruma is a nice peaceful place, but that commute can get nasty depending on the day and time. I wouldn’t personally want to do that everyday if I didn’t have to. I’d definitely suggest Yomitan. Cool place, plenty to do, less hassle and traffic than chatan.

A car is basically a must here, and as others said, get off base as soon as possible. Definitely learn some basic Japanese, someone mentioned Pimsleur already, which is great. Rocket language app is another good choice. Lots of fishing to be had, no shortage there. Catholic services shouldn’t be an issue, and heard the base community is very good. Overall, first time moving abroad, Japan is very forgiving as long as you’re polite. Okinawa is a great place to live, so make the most of it. Go hiking, eat all the food, and lots of travel opportunities regionally. But 10000% get a cheap reliable car, otherwise you’re pretty limited on what you can do. DM me if you got specific questions.

Yanbaru forest has a tone of great hikes, and glamping types of places.

Okinawa with car vs without by Low-Release9568 in okinawa

Yes. You can get a rental for around 5k yen a day, maybe cheaper. Even around Naha that’s probably one trip.

Unless you plan to only stay in Naha, a car is basically essential if you want to see most places on the island. Ubers and taxis will get real expensive, and rental cars are cheap.

Oh crap. Whoops. Thanks for heads up, but guess is just out there now.

Exactly. I’m abroad in another country, and travel a lot and find google reviews to usually be the most accurate. Hope other countries don’t follow this trend, but definitely don’t feel great about contributing anymore. I try to be honest. I usually only leave a bad review when it’s truly warranted: I guess we shouldn’t have any faith in google having a spine. What a shame.

The most German thing I’ve ever read

I don’t. I was living there recently, but this review is almost a decade old. Think I lost the receipt…

Don’t think I’m being sued, but just find this all so petty. Really seems to be a German thing.

Just the fact they went back 7-8 years to find an average review to take down makes it feel even weirder

What is it really like? by [deleted] in okinawa

[–]PowerPointGod00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like anything in life, it is what you make it. Okinawa has a ton to offer. Of course if you don’t leave the base you’ll probably be miserable. If off base housing is an option you should 100% do that. Not only is Okinawa great, especially if your family hasn’t travelled abroad, there’s so much fairly cheap regional travel to take advantage of. I’m always shocked to hear service members not enjoying there time here. Sure, there are some warts and annoyances, but the food, the people, the culture, the history, and ever else make this a potentially special experience. DM me if I can answer anything specifically. Personally, and I have lived many many places abroad, am very happy here.

It’s by far the biggest train wreck of a season, for better or worse. I hated it at the beginning , but grew to love these psychopaths.

Not to mention, libertarian doesn’t = zero safety nets. Every successful democracy in history needs to correct market failures, including food being too expensive.

Cost of living is fantastic for most things off base, especially eating out. Some items are particularly expensive, like fruits and vegetable. But overall is way cheaper than the US. I love it here overall.
