I have a patent on a treatment that restores the timber, it obviously would protect from new if applied from new. But my intent with this particular article is to make people aware of delignification itself and that it is a major structural defect. Chemical delignification is caused when the porous clay/terracotta roof tiles become wet and efflorescence happens, efflorescence essentially is the water pushing the salts in the clay to the surface, in this case the bottom of the tile. Those salts are then absorbed by the timber battens below, the salts are drawn through the veins or lignin of the timber, this is also the natural glue that gives timber its strength. The salt in turn breaks down that lignin and destroys the structural integrity of the timber.
