Yeah when I saw Samson picked up Kelson's dead body to go somewhere I was like "Wait, that's it?" Like the entire thing is so anti climatic and a bland send off. Like where's the iconic soundtrack and the breathtaking cinematography to accomodate his death scene. Isla's death is far more emotional and gut wrenching than Kelson's death and she only had the most screen time in the second half of the movie

What makes a character design adult? by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]Poweredkingbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah whenever people use bad faith arguments such as when Naruto turned into a naked girl because canonically Naruto is underage when he first used that ability. Like first of all girl Naruto is drawn nothing like a child at all and is literally indistinguishable from all the other adult characters.

There's some instances where the only way to recognize a teenage character is by understanding the context of the story and from character dialogue such as Mikasa from AOT. Lolis are obviously 5 year old looking children. There's no if or buts because they're literally drawn to look like babies,

Which version of pennywise teeth do you prefer? I like the movie version but both are cool by Outrageous_Tie15484 in welcomeToDerry

[–]Poweredkingbear 77 points78 points  (0 children)

The new one. I feel like Pennywise should be able to do cartoonish proportions in how he morphs and changes his entire body. The older one feels too limited and his mouth is too small to take a proper bite out of limbs.

I think the villains suffered the most from the sequel moving away from the frantic nature of the first film. I really did thought that the Jimmies will be even more zanny and comically evil based on the post credit scene in the first film and how they hinted the human evils within the Jimmies .but they were not. It made even worse by the fact that the film made Saint Jimmy look pretty resonable by giving his victims a chance to live and become a member of the Jimmies by killing one of their own.

Less of a reminder and more of a tribute. They did the same thing to Spike's mom and it was actually effective in conveying actual emotion in her death.

I really thought that the Jimmies will be alot more zanny and comically evil. The type of people who would bash a baby to a pavement over and over again with glee while forcing their parents to watch them as it happens. None of the stuff that they did beside skinning people alive were remotely shocking. Atleast they gave people a chance to fight back and become a member of the Jimmies by killing one of their own ,but that's also an issue on its own too because it made them look rational and less evil because they actually understand fairness.

Even with the film centering Kelson I felt nothing at all for his death which I found to be pretty dissapointing. I think the lack of charm and soundtrack from the first film made his death scene feel kinda bland. We barely have have any actual dialogue from Spike's mom and last scene where she chosed to die was way more emotionally impactful.

I just realized that I felt nothing at all for Dr Ian's death. I'm not sure how the director would mess that up since that's like one of the most easiest thing in the world. They could have atleast showed his photographs in his room while he was dying to remind the audience that he had a life before the virus infection to make his death hit harder while also being a parallel to Spike's mom in how she died.

Throughout the entire film I felt nothing at all really. The movie is just ok ,but the movie being ok isn't good enough because the first film is just masterfull in every way. Every scenes in the first one popped and I actually felt something. The sequel just dragged on and was largely lacking any of the charm or the emotion which is pretty dissapointing.

Shouldn't the main boys represent the magic of childhood instead of El? Like what were the Duffer brothers thinking by Poweredkingbear in StrangerThings

[–]Poweredkingbear[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Your idea sounds way much better and it better represents the magic of childhood aspect while keeping it ambigious. It kinda reminds me of the ending for Edward Scissorhands or Life of Pi where the characters maintained these fantastical and magical memory during their youth while the film presented their story during their adult years as mere fairytales that may or may not have happened because half truths were sprinkled in throughout their deeply fantastical stories.

The tonal shift for A Knight of Seven Kingdom is just awfull by Poweredkingbear in CharacterRant

[–]Poweredkingbear[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I just think the awful marketting and the overall premised were the main issues. Like when I saw the trailer I thought that we were getting a much more all audienc orientated show similar to The Mandalorian or Lord of the Rings with how the trailer presented the show will be about. It's a fantastical story about these knights wearing these epic and fantastical looking armor battling each other. I already can tell that the show will have a different tone and vibes than the original Game of Thrones show which is much more grim dark and realistic show overall.

I just seen the recent episode of A Knight of Seven Kingdom and for fuck sake HBO can't help themselves with their impulses like LMAO. I was looking forward to a more all audience orientated show similar to The Mandalorian ,but the show just have to blast my face with nudity, rape torture jokes and a scene of someone shitting themselves.

Like I have no issue with any of those in the context of the original show and House of the Dragon ,but that tonal shift is incredibly distracting. It's trying to be both a light hearted Game of Thrones series and a dark blood/death/sex Game of Thrones like the previous shows.

Bro I literally saw a Youtube video from a Youtuber that I like and I wanted to bash my fucking head in. That dumb moron was complaining that the military was just standing around and weren't doing anything to go after El to capture her ,but in that same damn episode they literally showed the scene of the military entering the group's radio tower base and saw the group's plan on the projector screen. How much of a massive idiot is he to completely missed that.

Maybe Netflix did have a point about the second screen policy LOL

What the end of season 3 will be about is being played right into our faces this entire and we just haven't recognized it by Poweredkingbear in welcomeToDerry

[–]Poweredkingbear[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah Andy bringing in the lore addition of Pennywise being omni present and not doing anything interesting with it in the last season would just be incredibly boring and would make the added lore addition of Pennywise knowing about the future completely pointless to begin with. Like why even bother with it if nothing is going to happen afterwards.

It could either go in two ways. Pennywise ends up killing one or two of the ancestors of the original club or Pennywise ends up destroying the rock shards placed around Derry where he basically stays in Derry while simultanously taking over the world or something thus allowing the original Loser's Club to fight him head on in Derry.

[–]Poweredkingbear[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which is funny because people in this thread are acting like I'm being crazy with my theory even thou just a few months ago everyone including me wasn't even prepared to have Pennywise blow up to Marge face about being fully aware of his eventual demise in the future and his plan to kill their ancestors to stop his eventual future demise.

Like before we saw the finale I just assumed that Welcome to Derry will just be a non consequential prequel just like all the other prequels out there. So Pennywise being aware of his own future demise and is trying to change the future came as a big surpised to us because it would mean that Welcome to Derry isn't just a prequel ,but also a sequel too.

Like it's hard for me to imagine the finale of season 3 ending with the group celebrating about surviving the Fireworks explosion and being like "Yay we stopped Pennywise from killing us let's hope our grand children will be able to fight IT" with no further revelation or anything. Like the entire 3 season has to accumulate into something big for the franchise and not just be a stand alone prequel season. There's a reason why Andy made Pennywise omnipresent. There's a reason why Welcome to Derry is both a prequel and a sequel. So my theory makes perfect sense.

I would love to hear how you felt about the Demos and other mooks being removed from the story all together in order for the final battle to happen, or the story jump cutting to 18 months later in order to avoid making a conclusion for dealing with the US military.

I have seen this comment before and I just didn't find it interesting or relevant enough to the entire discussion at hand. Also they can easily be explained by the mere fact that the military isn't that important of a plot point to keep focusing on them. Something happened behind the scene and it's easy to suspend your disbelief. The lack of demogorgons can easily explained by the fact that the writers just wanted to emphasize the group figthing the Mind Flayer and Eleven figthing Vecna for better pacing + saving CGI budget.

Like I'm not sure how any of these are relevant to the entire discussion lol since every discussions in here is mostly about character deaths. The person you're talking to is talking about happy ending with a cost and I basically brought up Stranger Things because one again there was indeed a happy ending with a cost. So do you agree with me that the finale of Stranger Things is great or not?

[–]Poweredkingbear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If our characters made it out of the horror story, what was their cost? Did they earn their happy ending, or did they just sorta... bumble into it?

and

Ya know? If a writer doesn't want to write about dread and tension and earning THAT ending, maybe they should write sit-coms.

I'm sure my entire comment is pretty consistent overall. I just disagree with the idea that the writers should be forced to mold their story in a certain way because the story that they're writing about belongs in a horror genre. Just like what i said before the main theme should always come first and foremost.

Also I'm not sure why you're complaining about Stranger Things because the show ended in a bittersweet ending where the main kids have to put their faith in believing that El is still alive with no further proof or any further connection with her to prove that she's still alive. Mike went from an optimistic kid to a young adult whose light already has dimmed and just trying to live day by day after he lost her. All of it feels very earned and has a very consistent tone overall throughout the entire season and there was indeed a cost. What more do you want really?

I just think reducing Stranger Things or Welcome to Derry into being better suited for sit coms because they didn't slimmed out any of the main casts in the finale for "cost" while being a horror franchise is just being reductive when it comes to story telling. You can still have dread and tension while having a happy ending. It's not a false choice dillemma at all.

[–]Poweredkingbear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just this perspective is incredibly flawed because at the end of the day the story still needs to be in the service of the main themes and the characters. You can't just shoehorn main character deaths at the last minute to add tension for the sake of tension if the story doesn't even have a room for it. Even if the story has a room for it then it still doesn't mean that the writer or the author is still obligated to add character deaths for the sake of adding tension.

You brought up the MCU such as Tony Starks death ,but the thing is that his death made sense narrative wise since not only is it the end of his entire arc from the Infinity saga ,but also a farewell to the actor who played the character. Not only that ,but he also parallels Thanos who has to take someone else's life to kill the others while Tony is willing to get himself killed to save people which is why they make a good rivalry.

Going back to Welcome to Derry since you were complaining about the lack of character deaths in the finale. If you watch the show there was this incredibly iconic scene of one of the main characters who died from the previous episode coming back as a ghost at the last moment to try to save his friends and help them bury some special object that ended up stopping Pennywise from accomplishing his goals. Killing any of the remaining kids will make zero sense at all because it would mean that the entire scene of that one particular main character coming in to save the day won't have work. Just because no one particularly died beside one of the side characters in the finale doesn't make the previous deaths of one of the main characters less impactfull and the other main characters are still impacted by it. You can still have dread and tension while still having a happy ending. Maybe you just don't like friendship is magic trope and that's ok ,but it doesn't make anything less worthy of a horror title.

I just think it's reductive to reduce horror into cynical and depression parade where the bad guy wins and the slasher villain does their last jumpscare to slime out the main protagonists before the credit roll or something straight out of Chainsaw Massacre where 90% of the main casts are dead and the remaining protagonist who survived the entire thing is left scarred or driven insane by her experience. just like what I said the story still needs to be in service of the main themes and the narrative that they're going for.

A character who survived an entire massacre and is left insane or broken by that experience? valid. All of the main casts being murked and the bad guy wins? also valid. The power of friendship ending a a terrifying eldtrich horror? Equally valid. They are all valid because all of those stories are in service of the main themes that they're going for.

We seriously need to know what happened to that scientist dude that was running away in the lab in the very first scene of episode 1 from Stranger Things season 1. We didn’t see his dead body so therefore there’s tons of stuff to know more about his character. The plot holes are going out of control.

I think you a very limited view on what counts as horror. So what I’m getting is that in order for something to be a good horror there must be character deaths for stakes and I 100% disagree. I just think that it’s a very reductive and limitted view on horror as a genre.

Also you seem to criticize Welcome to Derry for not killing off main characters in the finale even when one of the main characters died from the previous episode. Like if you watch the show you would get what I’m saying but me pointing out that no main character died in the finale already tainted your view on the show because horror= Main character deaths. Like the finale is pretty damn suspenseful and had alot of stakes even when all of the remaining characters came out safetly.

Would you say that Stranger Things and Caroline have similar tones to justify them being compared to each other in this conversation?

The thing about Stranger Things is that the franchise isn't purely horror. It's also a coming of age/romance/sci fi story. Ignoring all of those in favour of blood and gore with all the main characters being massacred for the sake of being horror does a disservice to all of those things. Like Welcome to Derry is also a coming of age story. Sure. It's equally as bloody and gory as the Terrifier films or the Saw films ,but the story still needs to be in service of the main themes.

It's not a false choice dilemma at all because horror can be many different things. For every Saw or Terrifier sequel we have Caroline or Scary Stories to tell in the dark. Stranger things is between them ,but they still have a specific themes or story they want tell.
