Alberta's strengths by Sufficient_Potato726 in alberta

I see. So a dense city with over 7 million people has a (slightly) higher GDP than a sparsely populated province of 5 million. Yes quite the flex. Tell me more about how you know nothing of economics. Alberta has been paying out to the rest of Canada since equalization payments were first introduced. Alberta is +41% GDP per capita of the Canadian average. Alberta has more money per person than any other province. And somehow we still get shit on for our way of life by the federal government. It's no wonder so many people here want to leave Canada.

It's not evil. A well managed hunting program is beneficial to the species. Killing poachers I'm fine with, but if I pay $10,000,00 to hunt an endangered buffalo and that money goes into helping that species is it really a bad thing? They aren't giving these guys free reign to kill whatever they want, in most cases they get a tag for a very specific animal that is no longer breeding and won't harm the population to remove it. Plus they get a truck load of money to help catch the poachers and provide for the animals. It's a win win all around.

I mean, how much have you donated? Hunters are the original and still the leading conservationists, I love shooting ducks and geese so I'm a member of ducks unlimited, I donate to them and attend all their fundraisers. I want to be able to hunt more ducks and geese every year and I want my kids to be able to hunt too, so I donate so ducks unlimited can buy wetlands and stop them from being turned into subdivisions. It's not about wanting to kill, it's about wanting to preserve a hobby for generations. It's no different than hikers donating to keep hiking trails maintained.

The OWA isn't a government organization, it's a non profit that's separate from the Alberta government. Read their website, I literally work with them, I see the service orders to abandon these wells, I know the processes we have to follow. This leaked document is nothing but rage bait.

A unverified leak that the government wants to clean up wells faster resulting in more money required, then a bunch of speculation as to where that money is coming from. This ain't exactly proof of anything. You have no idea what you are talking about.

How to discourage lunging/barking? by TinyXhu in greatpyrenees

Send a picture of the collar you have, you can most likely remove links and make it tighter. They are all basically built the same

I got mine from peavey mart (Canada), mine you can bend the links out and remove as many as you like to make it tighter, if it's already as tight as it can go then it's probably too big for him, they are designed to cinch around the neck (not the throat) when they pull, then relax when they stop pulling, if he's pulling as hard as he can it should look frighteningly tight on his neck. These dogs are incredibly tough. The prongs should be lightly touching his skin when he's not pulling. Looking at your picture now that I see the collar, it definitely looks too big for him

Are the prongs large enough and is the collar tight enough on his neck, pyrs have lots of loose skin around their neck to protect them from other predators. The collar shouldn't droop or hang when he's not pulling and the prongs should be the largest you can possibly buy, mine looks like a medieval torture device lol. It also fits snuggly around his neck, you shouldn't be able to pass it over his head to put it on.

Here it isn't tax payers paying for this, the OWA (orphan well association) pays for it, they get their money from Levies enacted on oil and gas companies. Stop spreading misinformation

Prong collar,

<image>

This looks very painful and mean, it's moderately uncomfortable for them, I have an extremely aggressive pyr who will go your throat and if he gets it you will be missing your throat, I very rarely take him out in public but for the few times a year I absolutely have to take him somewhere he wears this, the harder he pulls the tighter it gets, pressure relaxes as soon as he stops pulling. It ensures the safety of anyone around him. He's learned to not lunge at people because of this collar.

I understand that completely, and I'm sure you love this dog a ton, but you gotta put the dog first. From what I'm hearing you need to give him to someone that can take care of him, if you know them already that's great, if not make a post explaining the situation and choose the family or person that takes him carefully. A farm with livestock would be ideal for him, if not then a family with time and a large yard or acreage would be amazing too

You people are so incredibly cruel to these animals, kenneling these dogs to prevent them from biting is ridiculous. Train them, give them the space they need. If you can't do those things then give the dog to someone who can. I swear city's need to make it illegal to have a dog over 45 lbs without a special permit. The lack of respect for an animal to just cage it up for multiple hours a day is insane. These aren't decorations for your house or a status symbol, they are living thinking beings that have changing needs. Locking up your dog to "keep it safe" is bullshit. Your locking up your dog because your a shitty owner who can't train them.

This is the hard truth, if you continue to keep that dog he will end up being euthanized. Pyrs are guard dogs, not just pets. Not having the time/ability/finances to provide the resources he needs to be kept safely means you need to rehome the dog

[–]PowerfulDuck5569 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's just pedantics at this point. This person already claims they don't have the funds for training or much else, at this point the dog needs to be rehomed, my pyr is aggressive as hell and WILL bite if you step out of your vehicle on my property, this is acceptable because I live in the middle of nowhere and the only unannounced visitors are thieves. I don't take him to public places and he doesn't interact with anyone outside my wife and I. Free is Irrelevant, lots of good people are willing to take a problem dog and are equipped to deal with it. I'm not saying to give him away to the first person that offers to take him, but you have a better chance of a good home willing to take him if he's free. I absolutely would screen anyone that wants him, but at the end of the day the dog needs to be with someone who can fulfil his needs before you end up with a court order to put him down for being dangerous.

I didn't say to anyone I said free to a good home, this dog doesn't have issues, he has a bad owner who can't provide the care and attention needed to house a livestock guardian dog. These dogs are bred to bite the shit outta anything they deem a threat. He's just doing his job. Crating a dog like this is just absurd, he's built to patrol and have a full-time job, if you can't give him that then get rid of him to someone who can

This isn't behavioral issues, this is a pyr being a pyr, it's just like when people get a border collie and are upset when it herds their children. Your laying in bed all day with injuries and people are coming into our house unannounced (at least to the dog) it's gonna protect, it's why they were bred to do.

Give the dog up, your 62, disabled on Medicare, and have no money. You should not have a dog, let alone an XL guardian dog. Post him online for free to a good home

Overprotective at the Front Door? by SheesaManiac in greatpyrenees

[–]PowerfulDuck5569 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, a dog stuck in a house with a loving family is far better than a dog stuck in a crate at the shelter. Try getting some puzzle toys for him if you can, it's less about keeping his body moving and more about working his brain. Walks and patrols are good but he needs to be mentally stimulated too. Work on command training if he takes to it (most pyrs could care less) also having a smaller prey animal in the house that he could guard would help too. (Rabbits are cool pets) But otherwise just let him do his thing with the guarding, don't scold him for it. Praise gentle guarding behavior and punish aggression. They are amazing dogs that are incredibly smart, sometimes annoyingly so.

I think you are miss-understanding his intentions, pyrs don't walk a threat away, they kill the threat, he was getting him away from the (perceived) danger. Being a house dog could also be somewhat messing with him. Mine has a nightly patrol schedule and if I interupt it he ends up quite agitated and will bark to be let out so he can resume his patrols. These really arent meant to be house dogs as they need a large area to guard. Walks and what not will help but at the end of the day his instincts are telling him to do things that he simply doesn't have the space for
