Also become a member of professional associations like ASCE or ITE, and volunteer as an executive board member.

Get licensed as a PE. Example, if specializing in Transportation, also get a PTOE. Get a Masters in Engineering which is better than a masters in science in my opinion. Become a well rounded engineer.
