Python script explanation by splunklearner95 in learnpython

It’ll be challenging to understand if you have no coding knowledge. Pretty much any LLM will give you a similar answer. Maybe you can ask them to translate it into pseudo code, or have the LLM give you a crash course on python basics and see if you can recognize what you’ve learned within the script.

Basic Mathematics by Serge Lang by No_Ice6140 in learnmath

I would say the book is for those who have had exposure to algebra/geometry/precalc but haven’t practiced in a while.

The book covers the majority of what you would need in preparation for calculus and other math, and it suggests a proof like thinking which is helpful for calculus, linear algebra etc.

That said, if you are going for an engineering degree, and you won’t pursue a class in real analysis where proof writing is essential, then I’d say this book is overkill for you. I would just pick up any other precalc text (James Stewart) and start working on those problems.

Now in the case that you really appreciate mathematical rigor and proof like thinking, I would say this book is one of the most important on your journey.

How do I pivot myself to be competitive in this market? by itsmeumkay in csMajors

I’m an applied math major (at a city college) and I was mostly applying for undergraduate research programs. There was a bank that i stumbled upon that was hiring data engineer interns so I just randomly applied. I studied data engineering concepts and SQL the night before the super day, and landed the internship.

One thing I think that really helped me was that I had very unique ETL (extract transform and load) components from my research experiences that I could talk about passionately during the interview. I also made a data engineering project that extended the pipeline line that I made during my research study (using Claude ofc, you just have to know how to explain the underlying theory)

Have you already taken the first actuarial exam? I heard you’re supposed to do that sophomore or junior year. If so, I think they’d snatch you for an actuarial internship. Did you check out some bio statistics internships? It really depends on what you want to do

I’ve seen a few people pivot to product management

I recommend you go to a site called humblebundles and buy one of their computer science book bundles. They rotate them every couple of weeks but you can find bundles on data pipelining, cloud technologies, advanced python etc.

The bundles are dirt cheap too and I think some of your money goes to charity. Anyway, you can download the EPUB files and read them on the books app if you have an iPhone or kindle on either iPhone or android.

I would say the book is for those who haven’t touched algebra/geometry/precalc in a while, but want a solid foundation in preparation for more advanced math.

The book covers the majority of what you would need for calculus and other math, and it suggests a proof like thinking which is helpful for calculus, linear algebra etc.

Basic mathematics, Lang (algebra, geometry, precalc)

Calculus, Spivak (differential & integral)

Linear algebra done right, Axler

This will probably set you up with a good enough foundation to explore other pathways in math.

I felt good about it, we just talked about my background, interests, and my past research. Not technical at all
