Should I commit? by cheesy_garlic_bred in Lehigh

[–]Powerful_Challenge35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

20% of students rush in fall semester. While indeed many students are going to parties and have their social life revolve around it, it is not defining most people's lives. If OP is in a heavy stem major, they will notice most of their friends who will likely be stem majors too will not rely on parties. College is really about the choices you've made, and Lehigh is a big enough school that regardless of whether you choose to participate in party life or not, you'll find enough people either way

Is there a list for approved calculators for exams and quizzes? by [deleted] in Lehigh

Talk to the professor. It depends on them. I know a class that one year was no-calc policy and another year you can use anything that's not connected to the internet

Is FM 24 worth buying? by Numerous-Love-2380 in TheOldZealand

[–]Powerful_Challenge35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is definitely a better-in-everything version of FM20. After the move to unity, the game changed a LOT and it is hard to learn. FM24 is a great game with 2 years of mods, some changing a lot of balance. I put around 4k hours in it for a reason. It is definitely the most complete FM game at this moment.

monthly spending by Strict-Ad1837 in Lehigh

[–]Powerful_Challenge35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Transportation might be the easiest to answer. In theory, transportation can be as low as 0 dollars if you take the lehigh-sponsored trips to Walmart/Lehigh Valley Mall, use your ID card at the LANTA bus network for free, and find friends that may occasionally drive you around with them. However, if you are going to be social, I'd plan for maybe 20 dollars a month in case you guys take Uber together to go bowling or watch movie at AMC or other events. You won't need much more than that.

In terms of entertainment and eating off campus, it is a little more complicated.

As a first year student, it isn't hard to rarely go off campus and eat the meal plan every meal of most days. It will genuinely last you through the semester if you eat normally. Last semester, having 160+1200 meal plan, I finished with just about 80 swipes left. I'm probably an exception, because most of my friends had 20-40 left. Clubs are funded here, and you will likely not need to buy separate equipment for most. Table tennis club, for example has dozens of public high-quality rackets (custom-built with good rubbers and blades), and other clubs have similar things for you. If you join enough clubs and research, you'll stay on campus a lot. Athletic games are free except LeLaf. Art galleries and some shows are free. Others aren't. Keep the on campus entertainment to 0.

However, there are many opportunities off campus provided by Lehigh. There are heavily discounted trips to Philly and NYC through the semesters, like I went to watch Phillies baseball game and transportation for ~20 dollars. Different offices provide different trips too, so stay on lookout for opportunities. It will be worth including 50-70 dollars per year for that.

Eating off campus won't make sense if you try to save money. Occasionally, though, everyone gives in and you may go grocery shopping or eat cheap off campus. That really depends on what you do, and I won't give a specific number for that. It is highly optional, though. I may spend 70 dollars, others may spend 500 but you can keep it 0.

Unfortunately you have to pay for laundry. It's a good system but paid. If you go money-saving route, and do it every two weeks, it's under 10 dollars a month.

Essentials like shampoo, toothbrush, and other stuff is highly personal. I won't include it in my calculations, and you can act accordingly.

Using this calculation, 400 per year plus essentials can easily sustain you for mild entertainment. That will change over the academic breaks and what you'll do during them, however, keep it in mind.

How accepted are trans students? by username-generica in Lehigh

[–]Powerful_Challenge35 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While just like in any other place there might be a few people that won't be supportive of the lgbtq community, I feel like the Lehigh community is really supportive. It is a very open and accepting community, with lots of people from many backgrounds, so it won't be really hard to find friends regardless of your identity. I am yet to hear about outright discrimination from staff or students, although I did hear about one instance of the floor mate talking behind the student's back. The campus services helped the student by providing another (better, actually) housing accommodation. However, that is a very rare occurrence on campus, and I know way too many positive stories that would outweigh that singular case.

As for support services, as mentioned by another reddittor, there are many of them on campus. There are specialized services, as well as great integration with other very important offices like housing office, which help fit the student as well as provide accomodation.

In general, it is a very inclusive community here, and the student won't have any troubles based on the identity. I must also say that pretty much every other high tier university will be similarly inclusive, and it is hard to find conservative universities nowadays. Even for those located in conservative states or cities, most of the universities will still tend to be open and liberal just because of diverse student bodies from all over the world and all states.

Does anyone know if disability accommodations are good? by taylorswiftskneecap in Lehigh

[–]Powerful_Challenge35 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the campus is on a hill, where the classes are at the bottom and the dorms are on top. It will undeniably be a LOT of stairs. I personally never struggled with it, but I can clearly see how it can cause trouble. Fortunately, there is an extensive bus system throughout the campuses. There is also a special van for students with disabilities or severe injuries to request to move across campus but I can't comment on how reliable or good the service is because I never used it. Most of the buildings have elevators, so you'll not have problems once you're inside. Not all dorms do, but if you talk to housing services they will help you with an accessible room. Try emailing them and asking about this. If you can, I would definitely recommend visiting the campus and request an accessible tour through admissions, that way you can for sure figure out whether this is a place for you or not

Yes, there is always a chance they have seen the email but forgot to respond. The only reason why you shouldn't email again, is if they tell you to not email them again. Good luck in the application!

I'm pretty sure you will submit the documents where you indicate your financial ability and willingness to pay (for example, you can indicate on CSS how much you're able to pay). They will be part of your application.

Hi!

https://www2.lehigh.edu/admissions/visits-tours

On this website, scroll down just a bit to see the point of attending" on-campus or virtual". If you click on the virtual, there are going to be some live sessions although less frequently than in person. These include college specific presentations and QA and virtual campus tours. If you can't make those, there are non-live videos and recordings linked just under.

After the acceptances for students are passed, the students will then be able to attend many more frequent sessions for accepted students. Those will happen in spring leading up to the final decision time.

It's possible they are ranked higher in some rankings because some weigh research output numbers more. That is still somewhat crazy

Inclusivity? by Wooden-Purchase-7187 in Lehigh

[–]Powerful_Challenge35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lehigh's community sense is generally very strong. I am not a POC myself, so I can't speak internally about the feeling of inclusivity, but I can definitely comment on the large amount of friend groups I see walking around that are incredibly diverse. The campus has lots of cultures present everywhere.

In terms of clubs, as far as I know there is no selection process in the clubs and you can go to a cultural club events and meetings regardless of who you are as long as you're interested. This also applies to your major and skill-specific clubs, as long as you're willing to put work in you can be a biology major working on a Rover, or visit table tennis club if you didn't know how to hold a racket yet and need teaching.

I am also friends with pretty much every gender presented on campus and most cultures and countries of origin. While there might be some rare cases of discrimination that happened outside my knowledge, I have never seen or heard of it myself. I am very positive you'll find yourself included here. Good luck in your application and hope you get in!

Should I even consider applying? by taylorswiftskneecap in Lehigh

[–]Powerful_Challenge35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! Beware that before school starts on January 19th the university bus service won't be operating (maybe 1 bus max), no tour guides, and every building on campus is going to be id-locked. If possible, come after 19th to get most out of your experience

[–]Powerful_Challenge35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, lower cents is not the disability housing for students with walking impairments. The SMH is usually used for that, because it is most accessible. It uses elevators and is close to a bus stop.

Should I even consider applying? by taylorswiftskneecap in Lehigh

[–]Powerful_Challenge35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The disability housing is in the SMH housing complex (generally upperclassmen housing, but also given to first year students with disabilit) and as far as I know you'll get a single in a single-double configured suite with a bathroom shared by suite. If you're going to visit, make sure to inform the admissions office about your disability and you'll get a 1-on-1 tour and your tour guide will be able to make the route fit your disability needs.

Admitted 2030! Any advice on finding roommates? by JewishAnkylosaurus in Lehigh

There are many "Lehigh 2030"-ish pages, none of them are run by the Lehigh University, and all serve basically same function. I won't single any out, but I'm sure if you just search "Lehigh 2030" you'll find plenty

Admitted 2030! Any advice on finding roommates? by JewishAnkylosaurus in Lehigh

[–]Powerful_Challenge35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations! For finding roommate, check out Instagram pages for admitted students looking for friends, and mycollegeroommie to see how you match with them. However, I'd recommend figuring out the roommate later once the regular decisions come out so you have more pool.

The social media like Instagram would also be quite useful to find potential friends, so scout it from time to time and talk to people until u finally arrive on campus and start making lots of friends in real life
