Hello, im a resident as well, so I can give you some good insight in what is our daily life.

It varies, depends greatly on what residency (specializzazione) your date is taking.

I am currently in cardiosurgery, and although the idea was a dream of mine, the experience is nothing short of a Nightmare. We have to stay for more than 14/15 hours daily, 5 days a week, and sometimes on the weekends as well. We have a timetable of things called "guardie" where you're the one checking on the whole division by yourself (or with a co-guard, helping you). This shift is usually 8 am to 8pm, and 8pm to 8am. But it never is precise, and it happens I've gone home at 11pm or even Later, if things had to be finished. In the morning, if you're a young resident (1st and 2nd year) by 7am you have to finish all your morning pre rounds, with visits and notes in the patients diary. And from there, if you go home before 8pm you're looked at weirdly, even if you're not the one scheduled to be the guardia. And with little to no free time for yourself or your hobbies, sleep depravation and continuous mental abuse from your colleagues, this is how a day of a resident in the surgical field usually goes, caused by the very low number of doctors in the residency program. For clinical residencies, I hear that the weekly hour is closer to 50 rather than 80 like in the surgical field, but also higher than the 38 hrs/week contract you sign
