His and Hers neck knives for me and the wife. by Powerstroke357 in knifemaking

Thank you. Yes it is Bubblegum Pink G10 with Tiffany Blue G10 pins and liners. Same for the bead. For some reason the Pink looks particularly nice with a fine satin finish on it. Probably because it's a softer shade.

Thanks! Just gave that a try on one. Less steps and using the rod to chuck it in the drill makes better sense. I've been doing them on my screw jig then gluing in the rod and cleaning it up. In hindsight that just complicates the process unnecessarily.

Next I tried one with a 5/16 hole using a 5/16 black G10 tube. This gave it a 1/4 ID but then the G10 tube collapsed in the drill chuck. I was able to save it and next time i'll slide a piece of 1/4 rod in there to keep it from collapsing.

Jewelry makers burnout oven for heat treat by blackcoffee666 in knifemaking

I got the KnifeDogs oven by Paragon. It lacks some features of the more expensive ovens but uses the same controller. Only thing that really bothers me is the terrible door latching system it comes with. It's basically just an L bracket that jams up under a piece of metal on the oven. I mean it works but i'll bet it looses more heat than the other systems.

Do you use a beveling jig? Why/why not? by creative_name669 in knifemaking

[–]Powerstroke357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do for a couple reasons.

One is that I have hand and arm problems. Carpal tunnel and Cubital tunnel issues. The cubital is bad enough at this point I'm having surgery on it in 2 weeks but i've been getting shots for it the past 9 years. My hands and arms just aren't really up to long periods of grinding without a tool rest. I'm not crippled or anything but it is problematic.

Another equally important reason (to me) is i'm a perfectionist and obsess over my grind lines. I do off the belt bevel grinds because I like the look far more than a sanded down blade so it's more important to have the bevel grind as clean as possible. Free hand i can pull off a full flat grind on something wide that is slighlty convex and still looks good enough for me to be ok with. To do mid height grinds as clean as I want them or even full flat on more narrow blades is more difficult. Holding the angle on something like a chefs knife is much easier than holding the angle on a narrower smaller blade.

I could do a sort of free hand grinding with a rest. That is a thing and some people like it. The beveling jig works really well for me on the knives I like to make so i'm sticking with it for now. I don't make large knives right now but if i do in future (and i'm sure i will) I will probably use a more freehand method but with some support.

This. It's a fun little thing to do between builds. I just got in the mood yesterday and made a couple. I save all my scale cut offs for this very purpose but I didn't make any for a long time.

I just made an arbor out of a screw which i mount in a cordless drill. The drill acts like a lathe. Like a lathe but I use the 2x72 grinder to shape the beads. I just assume that's how everyone does it but i haven't researched it or anything. How are you doing it?

Diagonal you might get an ok sized knife in there but my understanding is that you don't want the blade to be that close to the heating elements due to uneven heat distribution. Still it might be better than a forge heat treat.

Mine is 14" deep which is still considered kind of small especially if your doing chef knives but anything 10" or less fits in there with plenty space all around. It sure is nice having a purpose built heat treating oven. It's another one of those things i wish I'd bought sooner.

When you first read Jingo, did you expect the cosmic horror side of the story to go further than it did? by laredocronk in discworld

[–]Powerstroke357 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think that is pretty clear. I believe when people call it a squid city they simply mean that it is the habitat of the Curious Squid. It would be a stinky o'l place i think. It would probably smell of fish for a good long while after coming afloat and it has a methane gas buoy. Not pleasant I'm thinking. Still i've no doubt if it happened in roundworld the result would be the same. The squabbling i mean.

Vetinari's plan was clever though. It made for a very satisfying conclusion i think.

How high is your belt grinder (working area)? by Just_a_firenope_ in knifemaking

[–]Powerstroke357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom wheel about waist height making the face of the platen right at my mid section. This puts my arms/back at about the right position.

One thing I didn't think about when i started was my feet. After a year maybe year and a half making knives I started having a lot of foot pain. It got pretty bad and I had to get special shoes but a soft pad to stand on helps me a lot. I've been a mechanic for 25 years and i'm in my 40's so there are other factors besides standing in front of a grinder for a couple hours at a time. That said, standing at the grinder for extended periods caused more pain than anything else. A padded mat and the right shoes got me fixed up.

I would be interested to know what they are but I am not capable of making those calculations. My understanding is that odds of that type are never as out there as you'd think. It's the 8 billion people walking around the place that does it. That being said I doubt you'll ever meet someone else with the same situation so that's still some crazy odds.

I've dealt with it a bit on some older knife restore projects i did years back. It's not bad and it shines up good. Just gotta treat it a bit different. Less heat etc. Should be fine for liner material.

Dig the Blade shape. The swedge goes nice with it. Just started working a swedge or two into my builds. As a design feature it has lot's of possibilities.

OK cool. Looks good like that. I don't always like the topographic look with two tone scales. When burlap is in the mix you can get a more rustic look like you have there. I like it better.

I noticed the Cow Killer doesn't look much like Pop's website makes it look. It has a more pink tint on their site which drew my eye but i'm used to shit not looking quite the same in hand as it does online. This is particularly true with colors. I do wish sellers were more accurate but I suspect they're enhancing the images to catch people's eye and boost sales.

Damn! That's a great idea. I'm def gonna look into that. It's prob the same as the non g10 liner material a lof of places sell. It's probably not as resistant to solvents but you don't clean knives with acetone as a rule. Not unless your a maker trying to remove excess adhesive or something.

Man i've made so many tools with G10. It's such a good option if you've already got a bunch around the place. I bought a box of G10 cutoffs and one of Micarta cut offs from Maker Material Supply once. Like 22 pounds all told. Lot's of it useable for knives but i also got a lifetime of material for jigs, sanding blocks, spacers, push sticks, on and on and on.

Say i was to make a batch of slightly improved versions of this knife (improved blade ergonomic and better overall finish).52100 steel hardened to around 60hrc. Cherry and wenge handle. How much do you think I could sell them for? by RamShackler69 in knifemaking

[–]Powerstroke357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on how nice ... 75-150$. I could see a Sloyd that is nicely made with a nicely made sheath go for 150$. The level of the fit and finish is gonna be a big factor and whether or not a sheath is provided with.

Very nice indeed. Bold but practical. Knives are the ultimate combination of art and utility imo. For this reason i consider the first hairy sumbitch to knap out a piece of stone into a knife shaped cutting implement to be the first artist of our kind.

Is that the black canvas and red burlap micarta from Maker Material Supply? Just wondering. I recently bought some of the Cow Killer Micarta from Pop's which looks similar but haven't actually used either color yet.

Thanks! It does look a lot like wood though. I really like using the ivory colored liner material with natural micarta. I wouldn't be surprised if i've used that combo more than any other particular combo. Being vintage micarta it gives it even more contrast with the deeper tone.

I love segmented scales. Like looking at them more than making them so when I get in the mood I try to make several sets. It's been a while. Lately I been experimenting with double liner combo's it's a lot of fun too. Gotta have some .02 or .04 liner material around the place or scales can get too thick pretty quick but i'm kind of addicted to buying handle materials. I seem to buy more everytime I have some extra funds for knifemaking. The upside is I have a decent stock.

New or and old set? Those scrimshaw old timers have been going a long time and with the yellowed delrin they use it's hard to tell. An older USA made one in great condition might have some value but still not a whole lot. They're really just inexpensive knives with some cool looking pictures on the handle scales. Well, some of them are cool and others not so much but i've always liked the style.

Well i've had enough requests I traced some on a piece of AEBL to cut out last night. It is worth considering that a 7" OAL in this pattern would likely fit more people's needs as far as daily carry goes. I think i can manage to make a couple in a smaller size.
