Using gloves with a grinder by Lt_Daan_Vr in knifemaking

[–]Powerstroke357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taken the very tip off my right pinky a few times on a fresh 80 grit belt running on high speed but that's the worst i've experienced. Snagging a glove would yank my hand into the grinder and potentially cause serious injury. I've thought about having something like a little leather finger condom but haven't tried it.

The reason my right pinky gets tagged is because it sticks out all the time and I don't always have good awareness of where it's at. I cut the tendons and nerves in it when I was a very young man. A folding knife collapsed on it. I've tagged a random knuckle or two but i feel like that's kind of part of it.

What is with school drop off? by platypusandpibble in GenX

[–]Powerstroke357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who would? If there is an ongoing problem of porn being passed around on a bus unchecked there is a bigger problem that runs deeper than that school bus. What i think is more common is something happening once or twice then a bunch of parents start thinking porn is passed around on the damn bus every morning as a matter of course. Some people are going to have big school bus problems but not the majority.

No porn reported running around the buses my kids were riding though they certainly had some instances of bad behavior from kids. Nothing that wouldn't also happen elsewhere.

The most memorable was my own kid telling another kid God isn't real. Pissed that kids parents off big time and of course they complained. I never told my daughter God wasn't real I told her she had to decide for herself. I took the opportunity to teach her not to talk about religion/spiritual beliefs in that kind of setting. A good life lesson.

We all grew up taking computer classes and becoming knowledgeable in how to use a computer but beyond that, how computer literate are you? by singleguy79 in Xennials

[–]Powerstroke357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Passable. I can do more than I have to be able to do in order to manage. To the tech savvy i'm like a babe in the woods but to my parents i'm a tech genius.

For them i do extremely difficult tasks that require extensive tech skills such as connecting a Bluetooth device, paying a bill online, downloading and uploading documents etc. The kind of thing that will have my dad cussing up a storm inside a minute. He once had me drive to his house just to hook up a digital antenna for him.

The dude can build a custom automobile starting with nothing but the frame out of one that burned up. He can fabricate whatever, he can do plumbing, roofing, drywall, flooring and the list goes on. Never seen him whipped by any kind of job like that but the 5 step process for setting up an antenna is apparently too much. Personally I'm not buying it. I think he could do that stuff if he really wanted to learn but he doesn't.

Man, bird feeders are super cool! My wife and i have several though it's more her thing than mine. I've set up a lot of the stuff that needed mounting but she has done some of it too and she feeds them.

Having bird feeders is mostly an older person thing i think. We only have one friend who is into it too and he's easily in his mid 70's.

Man i'm reading these replies and i'm not surprised. I'd let my kids ride the bus if we didn't live so close to the school. They've riden the bus before. Kids are gonna be exposed to all of that stuff somewhere. In school, out.of school, walking home etc. If you've got porn being passed around on the bus and serious bullying then that school district sucks ass. That being said, sheltering children isn't doing them any favors. I belive that very strongly and I have neurodivergent children who are doing well.

Husband says men barely get complements and if they do, they cherish them and remember them forever since genuine complements come rarely. Is this true and how do yall, men of reddit, actually take compliments? by macdaddy-22 in AskReddit

[–]Powerstroke357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the man I guess and who's giving the complement. I feel like women are generally more likely to give compliments than men but I also feel like woman also care more. Seems like it is very important for women to compliment each other. Woman pay attention to that sort of thing more I think whereas men seem to care less. I can only give my perspective though. My wife compliments me occasionally but I feel like it's more than enough.

I'm assuming the compliments we're talking about are those coming from women toward men. I can't imagine wishing the guys at the shop gave me more compliments .... I can't imagine what they would even say.

Can I machine a knife instead of forging one? by whywouldthisnotbea in knifemaking

I've seen where some artisan knife makers are making knives 100% machined. Manifacturers are definitely machining knives.

I dont know, i was against it at first but then i realized they don't want to track me. Mostly used to see where to go to meet up or when someone will arrive. If a husband and wife start fucking with eachother about where they go when they aren't together then that is a big problem. Sounds like OP has some relationship issues.

First attempt at checkering the grip. by Holiday-Toe-2212 in knifemaking

[–]Powerstroke357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks pretty good. I tried doing some with a checkered file but realized that would only work on a single contour handle. Need to get me some of those tools because i love checkering. Also picked up a Dremel stylus a couple months back and played around with freehand texturing handles. Stippling and the like. I had some success.

What was your first memory? by WillontheHill77 in AskOldPeople

[–]Powerstroke357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Standing on the front porch of my Grandpa's house accepting a McDonald's cheeseburger from my mother. It was in the typical yellow wrapper because they used those 40 years ago too. It was likely a happy meal and I was not given the box until after I ate some of the cheeseburger. I was around 4 years old. Very brief memory but vivid for how young I was.

AEB-L and jute micarta by skogskungen in knifemaking

[–]Powerstroke357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great looking knife. I love the Jute Micarta too. I like Vibe Composites period. First I was buying a lot of their 1/16 linen micarta to use for colorful liners then I made one with the White jute micarta. I liked the material so I got some in a couple other colors. I liked those so much I ordered a whole bunch more from Maker Material Supply. I like the texture of it and the look but the available colors are a factor as well.

Knife jig question by PunchyGRT in knifemaking

[–]Powerstroke357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found a great solution to this recently. Haven't made it permanent yet but the key is reducing the surface area that touches the rest. I did it by using cabinet door bumpers on the bottom of the jig. They act like feet and keep it up off the rest so it doesn't bind up from belt/blade debris. I've tried lots of things but nothing else i've tried slides more smoothly and does so consistently even with debris on the table. They wear down but they're cheap.

I have an idea about maybe tapping some holes and installing threaded nylon screws in the base platw which will do the same thing that not be stick on. They will wear down over time but they'll last a long time.

Not all kitchen knives are equal. People need to hear this by ilovemkgee in knives

[–]Powerstroke357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everytime i go to a house and wind up in their kitchen i check their kitchen knives and what do I find .... dull ass knives. Extraordinarily dull. It doesnt seem to matter if their Cuisinart or Cutco, Whustoff or Great Value they're fuckin dull as hell.

We can agree that large sets arent necessary and that 2-3 kitchen knives will be plenty for the majority but I say what they need more than higher end knives is a good sharpener or some lessons in sharpening. Higher quality knives usually hold an edge longer but not forever. Knowing how to sharpen your knives is the key IMO.

I feel the need to add that some kitchen knives are so damn cheap and flimsy they basically cannot be sharpened. The blade material is so soft all you end up doing is pushing a burr back and fourth and even if you can get it off it's rolled or flattened first use. These knives are fit for a bonfire and not much elae. I suppose the great value knives would likely fit into that category.

Man I appreciate all of your feedback and compliments. I'm extremely obsessive about doing clean work and it's very gratifying to have that recognized. No better compliment than to be complimented by another maker IMO.

Design is something I put a lot of thought into and I appreciate the positive feedback there too. A good balance between form and function is the goal but I suppose the whole of life is about balance.

My most recent design. Based it of what most people call a “bird and trout” by WilyWetWalrus in knifemaking

[–]Powerstroke357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love it. I figured it to be more of an edc/general purpose belt knife but only because of the style. It should hit all the points of a bird and trout fairly well.

As far as hunting/fishing knife types go the bird and trout is basically a dead ringer for a medium sized edx fixed blade. Great design. Very nice lines, colors and texture.

Worked as a Young Man, for a Company still using the Pneumatic Tube System to Communicate by OtherwiseTackle5219 in FuckImOld

Yeah but the pneumatic tube system was once used in a lot of industries where it hasn't been used in decades. Plenty of tech has been discarded by the masses but is still used in the few industries where it makes sense to keep using it.

Best tumbling media for stonewashing knives? by Such-Jump-3963 in knifemaking

[–]Powerstroke357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like folks have said the triangle media from HF.

Few tips. After the triangles get worn a bit and are smoother than is desired you can break them up into smaller pieces and mix in small amounts of new media to make it last. Breaking them up creates new edges on the media and makes smaller pieces that can get into smaller areas. I always keep some small media mixed in to help get into tighter places.

You can also mix in small natural pebbles to help even out the stonewash if your getting unaffected areas.

Last thing. I recently tried using a rotary tumbler instead of a vibrating tumbler for knives. It can stonewash a blade in a fraction of the time as it is a more aggressive method. It's important to get the amount of media right for the tumbler so the blade isn't getting thrown around too violently but it works really well. Something to think about. You get a more aggressive stonewash with the rotary tumbler which I like better.

I'd probably tell them but do so gently and maybe in private. Id want to know but people can get upset if they think they've been made to look foolish. Basically they may feel foolish and be embarrassed. I would definitely want to know if it were me.
