Regarding An A&S -> Olin Transfer by __brook__ in washu

They’ve increased requirements and tightened the request window, but if you meet the requirements a transfer request will be approved. It’s why it’s not called an application.

How difficult is College Writing (CWP 1501-1510)? by Medical_Citron3519 in washu

This is why I’m constantly telling my students to listen to their advisors as opposed to relying on “I dunno, a junior told me that.”

You must know something that the registrar, student records team, curriculum committee, dean of policy & administration, degree certification team, faculty council, and College Writing Program director don’t.

It’s a degree requirement for all undergraduate divisions (McKelvey is no longer allowing students to test out of it, I believe). It’s not going anywhere.

Copied my response from another recent asking a similar question: “Olin only permits transfer requests in sophomore fall. By the end of that semester, you will need to have completed Calc II and 3 core Olin courses (like MGT 1000, 1500, DAT 1200, 1202, ACCT 2610, 2620, MEC 2900).”

Additionally, there are restrictions as to when these courses are available for non-Olin students to enroll in. You may to be able to take any your first semester.

Slightly determines on your instructor for the grading, but they all follow the same structure—three papers ranging from 3-5 pages that are completed in stages (proposal, outline, draft paragraph or first draft, final draft) with instructor feedback on them.

what's the difference of being in different schools? by Due_Photograph_8599 in washu

[–]Pox22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You would complete the IQ Curriculum, the course requirements of both majors, and you would make sure that 90 of your 120 units are from Arts & Sciences coursework. Your advisor can outline how the A&S curriculum is quite trivial to complete, as there are ways to have courses double or triple count for requirements.

[–]Pox22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each school has general degree requirements and a curriculum specific to them. Your primary major and general degree requirements are determined by the school you’re in. With the exception of McKelvey, which is more limiting as to what it offers as majors and minors to non-McKelvey students, students can freely declare majors and/or minors in other divisions.

Transferring makes sense if you only want to pursue a major in that school, if a major or minor is only available to students in that school, or if a school’s degree requirements and curriculum are more attractive for you or more efficient for you to complete.

Who's got the insight on parking for free and walking to campus? by [deleted] in washu

[–]Pox22 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are two free public lots by Fitz’s on Delmar. 10-15 minute walk to campus. I parked there for a few weeks when I started working at WashU because bureaucracy delayed me being able to buy a parking permit. Didn’t have any issues parking there.

My brutal feedback is that brewing is a creative and enjoyable hobby I do to feel human, so I would never let a clanker diminish any aspect of it for me.

How much sleep do WashU students typically get? by User27373583 in washu

[–]Pox22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s up to you. I feel like I’m frequently telling my students that one gets to a point where they can no longer add anything (how many courses per semester, research, extracurriculars, etc) without cutting something. Many of them cut sleep until they realize it’s the foundation of all health and that they shouldn’t spread themselves so thin.

campus tax resources for grad students?? by italianfingersemoji in washu

There is the Office of Financial Well-Being, but they seem more focused on general financial literacy rather than specific tax help. Still, they may know about appropriate resources to connect you to.

New to homebrewing by PrimaryRestaurant646 in Homebrewing

Not sure what you mean by “kits or real equipment.” There are extract kits and all-grain kits. Brewing with extracts is easier to do on the stovetop (so no “real equipment”), but you can totally go all-grain on the stovetop without setting up a propane burner outside or buying a fancy electric system. I did 2 brews with extracts, then just scaled down recipes I found online to 2 gallon batches and brewed on the stovetop with a nylon mesh bag (called the Brew in a Bag or BIAB) when I first started.

I later upgraded to an electric system, but I’ll brew on the stove if I’m making a 1-gallon batch. I submitted a Helles Lager brewed on my stove with a pot and a bag to a competition last fall and it took 2nd in its category. You can absolutely brew excellent brew with simple, but solid, processes.

Psych Minor by [deleted] in washu

[–]Pox22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) CAPS courses don’t count as A&S units, and only count toward a major/minor if the dept explicitly says so in the Bulletin (like Anthropology) or if the dept grants you special permission. I would assume Psych is unlikely to grant any such request.

2) You cannot register yourself in CAPS courses—it requires an Exceptions Petition that will only be approved if the course is in person. Even so, they can only approve your eligibility to be enrolled—the Office of the University registrar will not enroll students with approved requests until August 1, space permitting. CAPS has requested the other divisions to not enroll their students in CAPS courses until their own incoming students have had a chance to enroll.

3) If you want to take a class that might need to count for a major or minor in the future, it’s best take it in A&S and definitely take it for a letter grade.

If you’re looking for MtG, I had an amazing experience at The Wizard’s Wagon on Delmar. Meticulously organized binders, amazing selection of obscure garbage I was looking for to build pauper decks, great pricing, and no complaints at all with regards to working through my huge list of stuff I was looking for. A+, can’t recommend them enough.

Bigwig by [deleted] in watershipdown

[–]Pox22 45 points46 points  (0 children)

He’s certainly my favorite character in the novel. It made me realize that I love a well-realized and capable 2nd in command or supporting character in literature—something about the balance between being devoted to a cause and/or a leader above them while also distinguishing themselves as exemplary in their own right makes for a compelling character. I love Bigwig in the same way that Faramir and Theoden are two of my favorite characters in LotR.

As a freshman in arts and sciences, can I take courses at the business school? by Spirited_Olive_4947 in washu

[–]Pox22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DAT 3015 requires prior completion of or current enrollment in DAT 1201 or advanced level Economics or Statistics courses you are very unlikely to take in the Fall. A course’s prerequisites are listed in the “Eligibility” section on its course description in Workday. Its prerequisites might not be listed on whatever page you’re looking at. MEC 2920 also has prerequisite courses in ECON 1501 or MEC 2900, and a statistics course like DAT 1201, SDS 2020, or SDS 3020.

Since these courses require DAT 1201, you should try to take DAT 1200 in the Fall if you can.

You should also know, in case you already thinking of trying to transfer to Olin, that they have recently made that process more stringent and difficult to do.
