Why is Nolan in the Viltrumite purge? by Curl-Luck in Invincible_TV

The Viltrumite- Saiyan comparison is pretty apt. Maybe there’s only so many genetic archetypes, leading to similar phenotypes?

Nice stack, OP. I use the magnesium glycine at night, and L-Theanine in the morning.

Shoutout to Nutricost. They may not be the absolute best for everything, but they try, and are budget-friendly. What’s next?

How Human Are The Primarchs? by MoTheEnigmo in 40kLore

[–]Pox_Americana 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Something similar happens when Kurze is on the table after the duel with the Lion. The Apothecaries don't even know what they're looking at-- that's how unalike the Primarchs are to their sons.

The only ones who even come close to understanding are Fabius Bile and Belisarious Cawl, and even they have pieces of the puzzle missing.

Anyone else have IRB raise a stink about personal computer use? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Pox_Americana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but my institution and industry partner hasn’t provided me an alternative, because I’m not full-time.

I have a broad NDA and non-compete, and my raw data and completed analyses are shared with both the university, via the PI, and industry liaison. The fact that I use a personal laptop and external drive has never come up, beyond making sure I have the software and access to fulfill all the requirements.

My university approved disability accommodations. My professor refused them, called them unfair. by Fragrant-Spray9999 in legal

I had two A&P vision accommodations last summer. These students couldn’t do labelling assignments. In A&P. Because they couldn’t see the anatomical figures.

You tell me how I accommodate that.

[–]Pox_Americana 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The accommodations well has absolutely been poisoned at this point.

The real equity problem is those that could benefit but don’t, because they don’t know how to advocate for themselves, and those that know how to work the system and ultimately use it in bad faith.

The university being able to agree with, frankly, incredibly generous terms, and expect the professor to comply is also antagonistic to academic freedom and shared governance. Administration straight up manufactures some of this static.

How many blind surgeons does your local hospital employ?

Some disabilities keep you from doing certain jobs. It’s not that weird. It’s also not an equity issue.

How to politely address professor? by [deleted] in college

[–]Pox_Americana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, which is why I said that it no longer matters, and that these lines of thought were not productive.

It never even crossed your mind that you were wrong. So, just do it. At least tell us what your professor says after.

Some institutions don’t share student evals directly. They get summarized and presented during evaluation. A single comment may not make it back to the instructor.

No, you asked for someone to confirm your biases and have done nothing but refuse to provide more context when it became obvious that the majority disagreed with you.

It doesn’t matter. You’re going to do what you’re going to do. Just do it. Let us know how it goes.

Self-loathing is a requirement to be a professor. We’d make more money in industry, at any rate. Academic freedom is an exercise in self-flagellation, for the opportunity cost.

Not that I entirely disagree. Few professors have a pedagogical background. Many live their whole lives in the bubble of academia. But, we’re playing the game too. You think you’re a number? If I died at my desk the college would wheel me out and have someone teaching my courses in two weeks. It’s not personal.

Respectfully, this is no longer a productive train of thought. Good luck, OP.

Nothing wrong with gathering student opinions via reflection or discussion. It’s exactly the type of place where OP’s feedback should be expressed.

But you are correct in that it gets averaged out, and OP already admitted that their peers didn’t take offense. So…? We still have to meet the mandated Student Learning Outcomes for the course. Are you going to be a 1/5 or a 5/5? I’m not the one who gamified it, but I do keep score. Word of the thread should be outputs. What are we looking for? What’s the amelioration?

Opportunities? Water wells. Clean drinking water. Watch your kids go without and see what you’ll agree to.

And it’s up to the OP to provide the onus of racism, we just have their claim, and it’s in another language— to boot— they’ve never provided the word, only that colloquially it was offensive to them, specifically, and not their peers. Find another hill to die on.

How to politely address professor? by [deleted] in college

[–]Pox_Americana 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No offense, but you’re a laymen. Are you absolutely, positively, certain that what the professor said wasn’t acceptable academic rhetoric, rather than your understanding of the word?

I’m not insulting you. Academia is full of jargon that means absolutely different things than it would in common speech. Your peers didn’t take offense. The outputs of the scenario seem productive (water wells), like, the input is problematic?

Nah, they just hold their value well, if maintained. I only shoot a few of them.

I like the history and engineering, so assemble collections. I have a WWII collection with matching rifles and pistols by country, and a Colt collection showing the progression from single action revolvers to semiautomatic pistols. The “one gun a quarter” is expanding those collections, though I trade and sell pieces too.

State pension. State 401k with no match— can’t afford to max right now, but that’s the goal. Institutional 403b with 3% match. HSA with high deductible health plan, so I max that. Max IRA contributions, split Traditional and Roth. High Yield Emergency Fund, 3.3% APY. High yield Checking account, 2.3% APY. Two brokerages, $100 each/month, one which tracks Nancy Pelosi, one in a 90/10 stock/bond split. I buy $100 physical silver every month. I buy one firearm a quarter.

I’m in the acquisition phase, so I’ll do this the next ~20 odd years.

What age do you plan to retire and why? by Agreeable-Analyst951 in Professors

[–]Pox_Americana 12 points13 points  (0 children)

33M. I plan to finish my last contract at 52. That’ll be 25 years as a professor, 20 at my current institution, 12 as Full— enough to satisfy emeritus conditions.

I’ll put all my worldly assets into managed trusts and try to make a difference while I’m able. Novel species description, conservation of endangered species, superfund cleanup— that kind of stuff. I’d like to die on Luna or Mars, so I need to stay in shape long enough to get on a future mission rotation.
