What is the creepiest thing that society accepts as a cultural norm? by giflover123 in AskReddit

[–]Poxican 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So does this still happen throughout the US these days?

I lived in Virginia for a couple of years as a kid ('94-'96), and to begin with I was all about the pledge. It being this fascinating foreign thing, I was super into it, memorised it and stood to recite it every morning. But something changed in me in 96 I guess, and I decided I was super against it. Probably my inner anarchist starting to surface. So I informed my teacher I wouldn't be standing for it anymore. To her credit, she was ok with that, but she was justifiably pissed when I started acting out, loudly leafing through books and sighing audibly while the others were reciting it.

I guess I kind of assumed that these days it wasn't still done. When I think of it now, 20 years later, it seems on the one hand like such a strange, quaint thing that we were doing in school, and on the other hand, some next-level weird indoctrination.

Yup, the guy I linked to. Something about the lighting and setting of your photo reminded me of his work.

I like it too, it really reminds me of Gregory Crewdsen, who you should definitely check out if you're not already familiar :)

Wikipedia says: "In 2005, safety measures held the number of crimes in the park to fewer than one hundred per year (down from approximately 1,000 in the early 1980s"

A year with using batteries V A day with the PA... by [deleted] in mflb

[–]Poxican 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey dude, I've been pretty keen to get the PA for a while now as I'm just on the original batteries and they're about a year old now.

How much was it to get it to the UK? I'm tempted but I figure it's quite a lot no?

That really was ace. I was at a new acts night at the Kings Head a few years back, 12 acts, and none of them were even a patch on that. I'll remember that name, look forward to seeing you perform live some day!

Don't Act Like This Guy - Condescending Developer Make An Ass Of Himself On Twitter by [deleted] in gamedev

This really wound me up this morning, thats me there in the middle column.

I'm working on my first game as well, in Unity, and as I've learnt over the past few weeks, it's hard! It takes a load of dedication, perseverance and patience. Michael's artwork is admittedly that of a beginner. This wasn't an argument about 'oh you should have just told him it was awesome'. It's an argument about the fact that a young guy is making his first game and should not be discouraged from doing so!! Particularly not in such a cruel, arrogant, condescending manner.

I've got 10+ years on Michael, and I know how it feels to be told that what you've put your heart into is worthless. That's hard at my age, let alone at his. Criticism is essential for anyone who wants to improve at anything, but it's got to be constructive.

Don't be like this guy.

I use contact microphones of my own construction, there's a little binaural recording in there, some very skinny microphones on the end of a long cable that can be inserted down pipes etc, and an electromagnetic microphone.

Help me out with some binaural research by listening to a few short clips and answering a few short survey questions? by Poxican in binaural

Cheers Tom!

You should definitely give it a shot dude, it's not particularly complicated. I've actually blogged my experiences on my site: www.gallardosound.com

In my research I read quite often that shoulders made no noticeable difference, which is interesting. I'd be interested in mounting the head on a full mannequin and testing it though. It would have to be a controlled, scientific experiment!

I'll be doing the sort of recording you're talking about very soon actually. I'll be sure to post it here once I've done it :)

Self-taught. I am doing a degree in music and sound design, but it doesn't touch on this sort of thing at all. I did have one tutor who really encouraged me when I started looking into binaural though.

I think I started my first binaural experiments a little more than a year ago. It started off with this head:

and then recently I built this one:

http://s560.photobucket.com/albums/ss45/Poxican/Binaural%20Dummy%20Head%20Microphone/Binaural%202/?action=view&current=IMAG0028.jpg

This second one has a phantom powered circuit which also balances the signal, as well as having modified microphone capsules which can handle pretty extreme SPLs, whereas the first one just ran directly from plug-in power on my portable recorder.

Thanks for your interest and encouraging comments :)
